I fell asleep in the cinema

I went to see the Downton Abbey film and fell asleep. I felt like a fool. I bought another ticket and stayed awake this time. Has anyone else done that?

It's not a reflection on the film, it was excellent, just me feeling knackered.

I often fall asleep in the cinema and the theatre even when it’s really good.
I am very often overtired. Being comfortable in the dark - I am gone quite quickly unless thrilled to be there.
I didn’t fall asleep during Hamilton; but I always fall asleep in Christopher Nolan films - it’s the droning soundtrack hits me like hypnosis

TroysMammy · 15/09/2025 22:49

I also fell asleep watching Chicago in a London Theatre and have also fallen asleep in pub toilets.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 15/09/2025 22:51

My son does it every time he goes. He slept through The Incredibles when he was about 3, and nodded off at the theatre last week at the age of 25. It’s one of his little quirks 🥰

I’ve had many naps during films at the cinema, my most expensive nap to date was sleeping through the entire second half of the Lion King in the West end!

I got a flight to a European country once, the plane was delayed and I fell asleep whilst waiting on the tarmac, the lady next to me woke me up a few hours later to tell me we’ve landed!

I’ve had a bus driver wake me up as he was worried I’d miss my stop, and when I worked in an office I’d just pass out at my desk for a few minutes way too often. I’m very well known amongst my circle as ‘can fall asleep anywhere’.

YouMightThinkThat · 15/09/2025 22:54

I did this on a date. It was some poncy art-house film. Made it about five minutes in and gone 😂 The romance went nowhere but we are still great friends and he’s now in the film business.

BerryBlastStrawberry · 15/09/2025 23:03

I love a cinema snooze!

ScrambledEggForBrains · 15/09/2025 23:03

Hahahaha yes I fell asleep through Avatar 3d. One of my favourite films too. I’ve also fallen asleep on the back of a motorcycle jammed in between the back box and my husband 😳 only the once though😬

Nope! Never fallen asleep anywhere that wasn't my bed (or maybe once or twice on the sofa)... Jealous of those who can sleep anywhere!

God, me too. If I could choose a minor super-power it would be the ability to nap.

Me too when I was on a date. Tbf he was so dull I think I would have fallen asleep anywhere.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 15/09/2025 23:16

Yep. Years ago, fell asleep in the cinema in the middle of "Copland". I was about 15, so not exactly living a stressful life, it was just that boring of a film.

And somehow, thats not the worst. A few years later I managed to fall asleep in a booth in a nightclub while me and the person I'd pulled had our hands in each others pants. I was very drunk at the time, but unfortunately not drunk enough to wipe my memory of how embaressing it was the next morning

DramaLlamacchiato · 15/09/2025 23:16

Used to when my kids were younger (not the age where they needed constant supervision but still too young to leave alone). Nice recliner seats and a shitty film I had zero interest in seeing myself. Lovely snooze

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/09/2025 23:19

Its a standing joke in our family that if my mother is struggling to sleep, take her to the pictures!

My father always used to say that it was the most expensive nap she had! We used to get taken whenever there was a Disney on (usually once a year, this was the 70's) at our local cinema, and within minutes of the lights going down, she would be asleep!

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 15/09/2025 23:20

So, so, soo many times. All the Lord of the Rings films (obviously), Skyfall, Dune 11. Many more.
Also Stranger Things theatre production.

MyPinkTraybake · 15/09/2025 23:25

I fell asleep to a midnight film at the Imax, tbf I'd been to the pub earlier and could not keep my eyes open!

BourgeoisBabe · 15/09/2025 23:28

I have never accidently fallen asleep anywhere in my life, including my own couch. I have to decide to go to sleep, and even then it can be a struggle. But I believe this is unusual!

TheaBrandt1 · 15/09/2025 23:30

I did this at Wembley at a much anticipated very expensive Eddie izzzard show back when he was good. To be fair I had been working round the clock as a corporate lawyer. Finally closed the deal and went with Dh and his friends smug that I was actually doing something that wasn’t work. Remember arriving sitting down then next thing I know dhs was gently shaking me awake as it had finished.

NapoleonsToe · 15/09/2025 23:34

I feel asleep in the dentist's chair a couple of weeks ago. He was doing a root canal filling at the time Blush

Guess it's a sign of how gentle he is!

Yep. I fell asleep in Dune. The sequel, whatever it was called. It’s very long, and it was warm in there.

I fell asleep during the first dune movie. Never read the books, wasn't of interest to me, DP insisted.

He now wants me to watch the first and the second movie back to back, but if I can get a good 6 hour kip in there I'm down for it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/09/2025 23:44

I take after my Dad. I fell asleep during Harry Potter *can't remember which one. I'm not a fan, just went with DH and his nephews). Dad was a shift worker in the 1950s. He'd pop in for a snooze in the afternoon when he lived in a shared house.

PurpleChrayn · 15/09/2025 23:47

I can never stay awake in films. The moving pictures as a medium is not one that I find particularly compelling. I prefer the higher pursuits.

BrizzleMaverick · 16/09/2025 00:24

Yep, I fell asleep watching the 3rd lord of the rings film - I had been unwell two weeks beforehand with a cough & cold which didn’t allow for much sleep so in a dark cinema I caught up on some sleep 💤

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 16/09/2025 00:33

I once fell asleep standing up at a Chemical Brothers concert.

Evergreen21 · 16/09/2025 00:44

I fell asleep during the bond film Spectre. We had gone to an evening showing and I was pregnant with dd1.

As you can see, lots of us have done it. You don't need to be embarrassed.

Oh I think that wins!

Did you mean to sound like such an insufferable snob?
