Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Urgh - it was 23 years ago (I was 16 / 17) and this thread has bought it all back to me 😂

On the upside, we used to get double time on a Sunday which made the gross ham job worth while. About £12 a hr if I recall - I was loaded! (for a 16yo)

And don't get me started on the bit round the edge. You can break your teeth on those awful hard bits, which are also tasteless.

I've discussed this with many people and in my experience people tend to fall into two camps: either it has no smell at all or they agree it has a strong smell. My completely uneducated theory is that there's a genetic component that determines which camp we sit in and unfortunately I am in completely the wrong field of work to even attempt to prove this.

I wonder if the strong smellers are also the ones who intensely dislike coriander.
Because there is science to back that argument re why some people think it tastes like soap.

We're in Scotland and our chippy closed down. Then a new, posh one appeared.

No chippy sauce! No curry sauce! No mushy peas!

Just haddock in batter for £13.95.
Chips are an extra £4.

Oh yeah - the jeopardy of the hand carved ham 😱

they always wanted it thinly sliced and when you start that’s really hard!

also people used to not take a ticket and try and push in.

That's interesting. My husband hates coriander but will eat cucumber. I am indifferent to coriander and wouldn't eat a slice of cucumber unless you were offering me a sum of money with many zeroes on the end!

Suddenly feeling sad that my young teenage self did not want a career in scientific research!

Same here about goats cheese. There is a firm divide in my family between those who love it and those who hate it and I am sure it is genetic. To me there is a strong smell and taste of dirty mouldy socks that is felt right up in the nose and will linger there for ages. I cannot comprehend how others do not get this.

Same when seeing goats at a farm, I think they're so cute, but the smell makes me sick. DH can't seem to smell it.

It's gene TAS2R38, which also dictates your view of brussel sprouts.

I am a broad-minded foodie who will happily eat almost anything, but I am baffled by the inclusion of okra in things.

It's like somebody thought, 'Ooh, no, this delicious curry / stew / rice dish is WAY too nice - let's take it down a notch by adding this bitter, stringy yet also curiously slimy green stuff to it.'

I have a deep visceral hatred for the stuff

Can smell it in any dish 🤢
I have a very, very strong sense of smell and it can be quite a downfall when it comes to eating out.
Barbecue/BBQ sauce is very off putting to me. The thought of pulled pork turns my stomach.

Well I love blue cheese, olives and avocado, in fact there is little that I don't enjoy eating BUT

Get those feckin' pea shoots off the plate! Everything ordered in a restaurant these days seems to come with a bouquet of tasteless green shoots. I even had them on soup once. Why, just why? Pointless and doubtless expensive, they add nothing to a dish.

I like oysters, but I have to admit, I don't understand why!

Avocado, okra, globe artichokes, olives are all favourites in this house. Celery too - with a lump of cheese.

I'm kind of with you about the breaded ham though.

Some exotic fruits are pointless. Star fruit only exists for its shape I think. And I can never get very excited about mange tout. I love proper cheese and don't understand putting weird flavours and bits it in.

Dragon fruit has literally no flavour. It just looks pretty and pink with white and black in the middle. Then there's that fruit that apparently stinks of rotting meat/eggs?! Why?

Pastry - yes I know - I'm an outlier.

To be more specific, most pastry I ever try outside of my own home.

It's generally tasteless and I don't like the texture, it gives me the ick - both dry and greasy at the same time.

Worst staff Xmas dinner out ever - the only veggie option was a "roast vegetable tart" with a green salad - i.e. a huge pastry case with a few roast peppers and carrots and a bit of lettuce and cucumber...... I asked could I just have the lovely veggies my friends were having with their roast dinner but without the turkey..... not possible evidently.

I will admit that Baclava is an exception to the above. A good, proper greek one, is nectar of the gods.

Marrows, breaded ham, tinned fish and shellfish, bloody eels in any form, mochi, Indian desserts, lychees, green tea anything, south East Asian cakes made of red soybean paste, cucumber, courgettes

Marmite. Looks like a particularly horrible poonami and smells worse.

Also, I won't touch breaded ham. The crumbs turn into yellow sludge. I think it was probably intended to be eaten hot and crispy, which would be nice.

And while I'm having a whinge, fucking marmalade. Sticky, bitter, sickly AND rancid at the same time.
