Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

The smell can be bad even if you like them, but that's true of all the brassicas I think. I like broccoli, but not the smell in my kitchen the next morning.

I love broccoli though! Maybe I’ll need to have a go at sprouts again this Christmas…

CalzoneOnLegs · 14/09/2025 20:31

Talking of veg smells, I discovered on here a few days ago ‘chefs candles’ i have 3 off being delivered tomorrow. No more cooking smells hopefully (I hate it) I use nag champa normally but keen to see if the candles work🕯️

DeanStockwelll · 14/09/2025 20:35

Snacking in general. Can people really not last between meals without cramming themselves full of more food? Admit it, you eat 6 meals a day.

Yes, some people are more hungry/have a greater appetite than others. It's not a moral failing. People have varying sex drive. Same difference

Crikey, what was supposed to be a light hearted post about food I don't understand as per the thread title, has really made a lot of people defensive.

Some people don't understand eating gherkins, some don't understand the need to snack, same difference.

murasaki · 14/09/2025 21:37

Anyway, I'm definitely interested in hearing whether these chef's candles work.

It's difficult to hear tone (light heartedness) in written form....but yeah I agree it was a light-hearted subject about "food you don't understand" so not sure why you changed it to comment about people inability to eat less....?? You said you didn't understand this - so I was trying to explain why some people might struggle with this :)

StartingOverIn2025 · 14/09/2025 21:49

I really don’t like red velvet cake at all. Cake I don’t like is pointless to me Grin

Fair enough. I actually didn't mean eat less, just that there are 6 meals not 3. They may be smaller than my 3, who knows! I just don't get the timings, the need to eat every 2 hours or so, regardless of what it is. We're all different though.

It seems to have started a pile on though, so was clearly misunderstood, which was probably partly my fault.

Gravy. Obviously needed in stews and casseroles but otherwise just revolting.

I don't understand the obsession with it, especially in the north. Gravy on everything even chips! Just why? It makes food soggy. Chips, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding should all be crisp but gravy makes them soft and soggy.

I have teeth I don't need my food to resemble baby food plus I don't want everything I eat to taste of gravy

I have my gravy in a bowl, when I have a Sunday dinner, as I don’t like my food soggy. I do feel it’s needed though. Just not slathered over everything so all you taste is that.

Ha, you are me. Dp pours his all over and serves me mine in a mug so I can do as I choose.

No worries :) It's so easy to be misunderstood on these forums and not being able to have a face to face conversation...and anything to do with weight/dieting/overeating can be very triggering for some....(me! lol). Sorry if I misunderstood and thank you for clarifying x

Thank you! Yes, I'd not really thought about the triggering. I'll bear that in mind. Amd totally agree re text being harder to see the intention than face to face. X

Try Lidl real Greek full fat yoghurt. Food of the gods…

Agreed. Brand is Milbona either 10% or 5% fat.
Far cheaper than Fage

DeanStockwelll · 15/09/2025 06:48

@CalzoneOnLegs I agree that fish can be a bit on the whiffy side, I grilled some mackerel a while ago , it took ages to get rid of the smell.
But there is something about the smell of a chippy that always smells good.
I'd be interested to see if the candels work tho.

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/09/2025 07:40

@DeanStockwelll yes I suppose the chippie has a certain not unpleasant smell, it’s more potatoes than fish isn’t it ? but I wouldn’t want that smell in my kitchen ! Candles being delivered today !

Trifle
Black Forest Gateau
Lamb
The slightest hint of any fat on meat
Hershey bars (apparently the vomitty taste is actually added on purpose - WHY?

I completely can't relate to this post.

I don't mind celery, but it definitely is stringy.

There are sometimes a few strings on the outer layer that could do with removing. It's quick and simple and rather like peeling a banana - just as eating it without doing so is a bit like eating a banana with the skin on and saying its a tough and tannic fruit.

Celery (properly de-stringed) is a delicious, fresh taste with a subtle fragrant quality and is delicious with a little stick of fresh crumbly cheddar.

Meatless bacon. Meatless sausages. No texture. Horrible

Yes. I used to not see the point of "fake meat" type products at all. I'm not vegetarian, but don't eat much meat and a lot of our home cooked meals are vegetarian. I would never choose to eat fake meat products.

Having said that, I have recently had burgers that are pretty much indistinguishable from real meat. To the point where we wondered if they had made a mistake with the order. Amazing, but kind of creepy!

I did say prepared correctly.

It needs to be peeled - takes a few seconds with a potato peeler.

I find it crazy!! I’ve spent time making the perfect crunchy roast potatoes or the amazing Yorkshire puddings, then he makes them all soggy!!
He also bugs me by putting hot sauce or mint yoghurt sauce all over food I’ve made before even tasting it. I said to him, how do even know what it tastes like?!?!?

Yes I find all those weird veggie and vegan “substitutes” really offputting. When cooking for veggie DS when he was still at home, I’d just have veggie myself, something like veg chilli, curry, pasta, quiche or maybe a nice vegeburger as there are some of them around. But I think all the fake stuff must be aimed at families where someone is veggie and they want to all have the same meal (like fish or chicken) and the veggie gets the fake “no meat” version. Otherwise why would you choose weird over processed, overpriced stuff pretending to be meat, when there’s so much nice normal meat-free stuff?

You know your vegetables are “fed” on sewage, both human and animal? And often some ground up dead bodies too…

autumnsessions · 15/09/2025 11:13

I don't understand fish - the taste is horribly fishy - except when it's really fresh and then it tastes of nothing. I really wish I liked it but it's just bloody horrible and fishy
