Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Ooh you've all been very busy while I've been getting my beauty sleep 😆

@CalzoneOnLegs what's your take on calzones?

Richmond sausages. They are bloody horrible. Have the lowest pork content to be classed as a pork sausage (42%).
People buy them when they are on offer. I remember an old dear saying to me “I’m a fan of sausages but only eat Richmond sausages” you are not a fan of sausages!

I rather eat Richmond cigs

Agree! I bought the frozen ones once as they were on offer, they are even worse than the "fresh". However, the prize for the most horrible "sausages" must be awarded to Linda McCartney. They taste like wood chippings and even my friend's greedy dog refused to eat them. I tried them in the early 90s when they first came out & again recently to see if they've improved. They're marginally better but still unpalatable

Oysters. Just can’t see what’s at all nice about them. IMO there’s a good reason why in Dickens’ time they were considered poor people’s food.

Better when cooked, though.

Fennel - the only vegetable I don’t like/wont eat.

@Mokel i love cardamom, I always think I’ve hit the jackpot when I find a pod in my rice, it’s strange how Parma violets are mentioned as I think it’s a similar taste somehow

Yet I love parma violets

Here's an odd one - I LOVE halloumi, but I can't bear the squeakiness of it.
Just thinking about it now has got me all worked up 😬
What to do oh wise ones?

Tinned mixed fruit cocktail. Foul. Everything is mushy and tastes the same and it smells weird. Ditto Russian salad, think that's what it's called, a horrible gloop of potatoes, peas, carrots in some creamy dressing. Terrible.

I used to love both of these but it was the ‘70s. The half cherry in the fruit cocktail was especially prized.

Greysowhat · 13/09/2025 09:28

Sponge cake. It's so spongy, like a sponge.

Eat it as soon as you’ve cooked it, then it’s soft and lovely.

We've got a tin in the cupboard 😋😋 we'll have it with some Mackie's traditional ice cream.

Ooh yes, the cherries and the pineapple were the best.
With Nestle tinned cream, which isn't made anymore.

Is that the thick sterilised cream? Blue and white label? Yes, fantastic with tinned fruit.

I like a lot of the foods mentioned on this thread but my controversial pet hate is.....custard. Please keep that sweet slimy stuff well away from my pies and crumbles and above all don't contaminate my Christmas Pud with it.

Cheese. It's rancid milk and sometimes, rancid milk with mould in it. And it stinks, like vomit and decay. 🤮

I love cheese but this made me laugh.😅

What is wrong with you !!
You don't like those tins of sweet yellow goodness 😋😋👍

Ohh I'm intrigued. It feels like I should like Okra and I want to, but I have also only ever had it slimey. How should it be cooked to avoid sliminess?

It needs to be cooked till the slimyness disappears, takes a little time. Then you will be left with non-sticky, individually separated pieces. And after that if you increase the heat on the stove, they get very crispy too. Though no water should be added at any point. I always cover the pan with a lid, so steam does its work. But okra has to be cooked only with oil.

FieryA · 13/09/2025 10:01

Asparagus. I want to love it but hate the smell of my wee. Even going to the toilet within a few minutes of eating it - my wee stinks

I find this very strange - I eat asparagus most days as it is so good for you - and don't find urine any different from usual.

PistachioTiramisu · 13/09/2025 10:07

Calliopespa · 12/09/2025 23:45

You must be making it wrong. Do you use a decent bechamel?

Drain pipes! And it is the dreaded pasta! Ugh.

But if you're eating it all the time, your urine will always smell the same.

I love it, but it doesn't seem to affect my urine.

Avocados. Bland with an unpleasant texture.

That is a revelation FieryA. I thought the sliminess was from overcooking so I was cooking it really fast and wondering why it was still slimy when I had had it in a restaurant once and it was nice!

RestlessSparrow · 13/09/2025 10:25

Macaroni cheese lovers always call it "Mac n Cheese", but the American rebranding hasn't helped me, it's still gross.

Same with Oreo cookies - bland biscuits that taste of nothing but sugar, and now they are in everything! Imagine going to America and finding their chocolate full of ginger nuts and custard cream sprinkles everywhere

Crikeyalmighty · 13/09/2025 10:28

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne I loved nestle tinned sterilised cream - also really liked fussells condensed milk!!

Yes! And they don't make it anymore. I am so sad about this.

I like evaporated milk too.
