Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

@ChippySauce i think the slate craze has passed thankfully

PeanutButter55 · 12/09/2025 21:59

The current matcha trend!! Tastes like fishy grass. All of the young people drinking it think they enjoy matcha when in reality 90% of them are ordering it with various flavoured sugary syrups to disguise the taste..

@Calliopespa it is most of my grocery bill, I’m vegetarian and meat and fish are so expensive that I can justify a £35 a kilo cheddar, I dread having my cholesterol checked ❤️

I was surprised, after getting the results from a cholesterol test last week, that it was on high side of normal. Not full on high. Given I am 80% cheese. I'm focusing on the normal bit....

Or pineapple in cottage cheese... yuk!

Is that still a thing? I sometime buy cottage cheese and haven't noticed the pineapple one lurking there for some time..
(I'm sure someone will add cottage cheese to the list though. I only like it on buttery toast or a jacket potato)

Lucky you!

Have you got a test booked? Please don't worry.

I am taking their dietary advice with a pinch of salt, sorry, cheese. Seriously though, I thought it would be worse but then I don't eat cakes or many sweet things so maybe it balances out.

I'll probably just eat slightly less cheese, but not by much....

Mokel · 12/09/2025 22:22

Richmond sausages. They are bloody horrible. Have the lowest pork content to be classed as a pork sausage (42%).
People buy them when they are on offer. I remember an old dear saying to me “I’m a fan of sausages but only eat Richmond sausages” you are not a fan of sausages!

I rather eat Richmond cigs

Also, there's a Kingsley Amis quotation that my old boss told me that I hold dear.

'Why give up the things you love to spend an extra two years dribbling in a care home in Weston-super-Mare.'

He had a point.

I don't see oysters as food. You've got to go to all that effort to collect them, then break into them, and it looks like a snotty phlegmy mess in there you swallow down. Eww, why.

I'm not very keen on watermelon - it doesn't taste of very much, it's like crunchy water. I accept that maybe the watermelons we get in this country may not be the most flavourful as they've presumably been picked early to last for travel. It looks so pretty but it's disappointing.

With you on both of those - watermelon , tasteless with weird texture, oysters? Like blokes jizz

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 22:35

@murasaki ive had surgery this year, consultant said ‘I don’t have to worry about you you are healthy’ (news to me ) I had blood tests etc but not specifically for cholesterol, I’m just not going there if you see what I mean, and like yourself I don’t eat much sugary foods, I will cross that bridge when I come to it and carry on with the cheese, and isigny sur mer butter, and golden yolk eggs.

Portakalkedi · 12/09/2025 22:41

Pasta - I can see the point of it being easily stored for times of dire need, but otherwise why bother when you've got actual food available? Made from dried paste of flour and water, (like we used for gluing stuff as kids), very little if any nutrition, and no taste. Seafood (except actual fish), makes me heave to see people ripping apart lobsters, crabs, they look like cockroaches and scorpions.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 22:47

@Portakalkedi ive seen this American tradition (southern I think) where they boil up crayfish etc and then dump the lot on a table top, looks like a load of insects absolutely disgusting 🤮

crabs are scavengers and nobody should eat them they literally eat anything decaying, including people that have been dumped in the sea. Mackerel are the similar they eat shit

@YourLemonTiger I really want to try Samphire

It's lovely, the best place to buy it is waitrose

murasaki · 12/09/2025 22:51

Samphire is gorgeous with a nice piece of fish.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 22:52

@YourLemonTiger thank you ! there was a (heated) thread recently about vegan fish and chips and it was on there a chippy in my county does the vegan ‘fish’ and also serve Samphire with it so I think I’m going to give both of them a go.

murasaki · 12/09/2025 22:57

Ooh, I've just remembered one I've never understood.

A full English in a tin. Why, and how. How does the egg work? And why again?

It sounds repulsive.

murasaki · 12/09/2025 22:59

Also, blancmange. Milky jelly wrongness. What were my parents thinking. I opted out aged about 6.

crumpet · 12/09/2025 22:59

Caviar. No point to it at all.

Yes, also a no go area. Blancmange with pretensions.

I cannot trust a person who doesn’t like pasta 😆
