Is anyone on here fussed about status in life? Like what Car or House they have etc?

As I live in South Surrey and all I’m seeing and hearing is people driving brand new cars and also being picky what house to live in. (It’s like they’ve got to show off to fit in with their friends and family!)

As with me I’m not fussy about any status in life and I’m happy with what I’ve got!

This is obviously quite common in Surrey. Does anyone else live there and likes to show off their status?

The wealthiest people I know drive an old banger and wear ordinary clothes

How do you know they are wealthy?

And also curious as to what non-ordinary clothes are? Or what ordinary clothes are if that's easier?

Nope. I live in a council house and don’t drive. I’ve never had much but I’m happy with what I do have.
I’ve seen people change when they come into money and get the lovely house and all the trimmings, but all the people I know have turned snobby and even changed the way they talk. Very strange.
Being loaded would be nice but it’s not something I think about. I have money obsessed family members who would sell their granny for money. Greedy and never happy with what they have or don’t have.

It's funny how people spend their money. I understand wanting a lovely home in a safe area or a car that drives well, but I can't get my head around designer labels, etc. I work in a private school and I find it amusing how many parents rock up in Maserati and Mercedes 4WDs, but their kid's uniform is stained and too small.

People generally mean "simple" or "minimalist" rather than ordinary. Case in point, Bill Gates et al. But he isn't most lileky wearing Wallmart polo and jens, is he... Nor are the others. There was always lots of discussion about wealthy and super ultra wealthy people dressing simplisticly. That does mean cheaply to some. Maimly because average person may find idea of spending £500 quid on a polo top understandably baffling.

My point is that almost half the country doesn't actually own the car they drive. So it might be flashy but it's not actually theirs. They rent it.

But if you happen to have a £75K+ nest egg and fancy driving a luxury car you'd be financially stupid to invest your nest egg in something that depreciates in value every month. You invest your nest egg in something that gives you a good return on your money every month, obviously. Then that extra money most likely pays a big chunk of your car payments, if not all of it.

There's nothing inherently virtuous about owning a very expensive car. My DB is retired but was a very successful private wealth consultant for decades. He has always driven high end cars and never buys them outright. It's simply not the best use of his money.

Cause I know them

So they’ve told you how much money they have? That’s quite unusual- you’d expect someone so modest to not draw attention to their wealth.
