A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Don’t know about latest polling, but East Wiltshire was a pretty safe Tory seat in 2024:

Conservative 35.7%
Labour 25.7%
Lib Dems 17.4%
Reform 16.7%

Yes it is a safe seat. Latest MRP showed a projected conservative hold there. Only 1% point ahead of Reform though.

Prue Leiths son. Eton educated. No great loss to the conservatives.

I’ve been reading but not commenting on this thread so far, but got to say that as Danny Kruger didn’t get a choice over either of these things (school and parent), I don’t see why we should hold them against him. Also, why should we care what school
or parent anyone has?
He’s a clever guy with lots of ideas. I think it’s going to be exciting. Also, he’s in a safe Tory seat and I’m not sure it’s a natural Reform one, so Danny isn’t doing it to save his position. Quite the opposite.

The YouGov MRP polling in June looks a lot tighter than that, Conservatives lead with 28% and Reform in 27%. So It could be a tactical, self preservation move given Tories have lost a little ground even since then.

Yes he's ambitious so it makes complete sense.

If you look here at the June MRP polling, you can look on the map where conservatives hold the constituency but a lot of them don't have much in it between them and Reform.

First YouGov MRP since 2024 election shows a hung parliament with Reform UK as largest party | YouGov https://share.google/OvAWz5gifcldGXJ1Y

Mid Buckinghamshire has an 8 point lead, that's the largest margin I can see so far but many have just 1-3 points in it.

Labour projected to lose over 200 seats, with the Conservatives falling to fourth place

Reform are not exciting and they aren’t the right answer for the future of the UK. Though I can see well why thousands of people think they are. The two main parties are not listening to the people, and the people are who they work for. Get paid by.

So I detest any politician who ‘defects’ to reform from the Conservatives - when what they should be doing is tidying up their own house and making it more credible for their electorate. The parties should concentrate on the planks of wood in their own eyes before trying to removed specks of wood in the eyes of others.

Interesting about it not being a natural Reform seat as that was my first reaction and the polls would suggest maybe that's changed? But I don't know the constituency so can't really comment as to that

I think I'm increasingly resigned to a reform government. I'd rather the Conservatives pulled it together but I don't even see the green shoots of that happening. So, from a pragmatic point of view, I'd rather that there was some experience in the hundreds and hundreds of new Reform seats filled with unknown faces in the next election.

True, he will lend an experienced hand to Reform.

twistyizzy · 15/09/2025 12:07

Danny also opposes VAT on school fees so that's another ally alongside Tice etc

TheNuthatch · 15/09/2025 12:08

His timing is awful. I think this will be damaging for Badenoch, which is a shame as she's been doing much better recently.

Exactly. Utterly selfish. Didn’t he have lunch with Vance the other day. Possibly linked.

It’ll probably be Conservative - Reform. At least not the champagne socialists of Labour, I suppose.

Perhaps. A lot of people on the left have said they'd burn their 'Never kissed a Tory' t-shirt vote Conservative in favour of Reform if that's the way it's heading.

I have read posts to that effect. Some are still tory bashing though, they need to be careful what they wish for.

That would be very sensible of them indeed. It’d never happen. They’re too painfully self-righteous for words.

We'll have to wiggle up and make room for them on the far-right, bigot bench.

I hear you, I'm annoyed too. It feels like a huge stab in the back for Kemi. I don't know his constituency, but I hope his deflection bites him on the arse at the next election.
I will politely disagree with you on his background though. I'm quite happy for Eton boys to be in government 😁.

Well I’m just waiting for the post ww2 rebuilding Britain analogies to pootle round the corner. Is Starmer practicing his Atlee voice?

it’s obvious we’re heading for Tory/reform or lib/lab/snp coalitions at the next GE unless the polls dramatically shift.

and in either of those two cases Scotland will go independent - either the price of the left coalition or an unlawful one if there’s a Tory/reform govt…
