A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Oh god. ‘Your Party’ who won’t allow members in if they are sex realists. They’re definitely not my fcking party. 🤢

Still if they help split the vote.

Another reason to keep SKS in place till Your Party can gather more loonies to split the left.

Now I've started being controversial, I might as well go all the way. Grin

I actually think Mandelson wasn't such a bad choice for ambassador. He's everything a good ambassador should be in a situation where someone needs to deal with Trump and his unpredictability - Machiavellian, manipulative, slippery. If his posting had worked it would have been a stroke of genius.

I didn’t realise he hadn’t been sacked!! WTH how could they justify not sacking him.

Sorry poor use of language from me. He was sacked but didn't have whip withdrawn I don't think! Which I think he should have

I've just read that there is speculation that Andrew Gwynne may be stepping down as MP (Manchester MP who got caught sending awful whatsapp messages).
Burham could stand at the by election. If Starmer and co block Burnham from standing, the seat would likely fall to Reform. They would have to choose between Burnham or Reform.

Ooh yes that would be fun to watch….

I agree. Mandelson is shrewd and talented in a dark arts way.

You always run a risk with people like that, though.

Do you know what? I've only been commenting a couple of days, however I would just like to applaud everyone who contributes to this thread. I't's refreshing to able to discuss politics without name callingand pissy passive agressiveness. Thankyou everyone.

Parsley4321 · 13/09/2025 10:26

Yes I think Mandelson can be quite bitchy and will be looking for revenge

Parsley4321 · 13/09/2025 10:41

@Julen7 total bitch and knows everything

And is exceedingly clever. If he’s A** Starmer et al are plucky C’s at best.

Parsley4321 · 13/09/2025 11:58

Plucky c must try a lot harder 😳🤪

twistyizzy · 13/09/2025 11:59

I think C is generous, I'm in the E/F category

twistyizzy · 13/09/2025 12:16

Very interesting. Engagement in voting risen since the GE, alongside the rise in Reform winning seats. So basically Reform voters are motivated to vote. That's also not an insignificant % rise.

On the subject of Labour disenchantment with Starmer, people say that Labour doesn’t topple its leaders and that it’s never happened.

I’d agree that the Tories are more ruthless and more likely to bin a failing PM, but everyone seems to have forgotten Brown’s coup against Blair. IIRC there were rolling ministerial resignations. Blair ended up giving a timetable for his evacuation of No 10.

Labour’s in a different position now because there isn’t a particular thwarted, bitter mentalist like Brown plotting away. But there is apparently a lot of discontent and there are plenty of ambitious people around, as ever in politics.

A few junior ministerial resignations and it’s game on.

But wasn't that because Blair had promised Brown the role after X amount of years but then was looking like he wasn't going to honour it?

twistyizzy · 13/09/2025 12:33

Lots of bemused headscratching on X by some Starmer and Labour supporters as to why on earth MPs are potentially plotting to oust him. They really can't see it 🙄 even though all the comments are telling them

Oh sure, the Granita pact.

But it was still a move against the PM and Blair was far from popular at the time. I doubt that Brown’s supporters cared at all about promises made over carbonara. They just wanted to see the back of Blair and install their man.

One thing in Starmer’s favour is that everyone around him is more or less useless. He may be that too, but he’s the useless suit in the job for now and there’d need to be reassurance that they weren’t swapping one muppet for another.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/09/2025 12:48

Speaks volumes that with a huge number of MPs, there is seemingly very little talent amongst them for the top jobs!

Upstartled · 11/09/2025 19:58

He was doing pretty well until he couldn't find any more dead people or patients who gave up and went private to cut off the list.

I've often thought about this second point recently. We've had private medical insurance for years, but have very rarely had cause to use it - until now. In the past year, I've used it twice and we've used it twice for one of our DC.

Talking to young people at work, they all go to a private GP if they're unwell, because they want to be seen today, they want medication for whatever is ailing them today, they want their scan or their test asap, not in six months' time. And, of course, for every person who does this it helps the NHS to meet its target and it reduces waiting lists.

twistyizzy · 11/09/2025 20:13

There's always a tweet too 🙄

I wish this would go viral all over SM. The only worry is who we'll get if Starmer is ousted. Rayner is gone, thank god, but that leaves Reeves (surely too tainted by her disastrous record as Chancellor), Lammy (god help us all!), Bitter Phillipson with that gigantic chip on her shoulder (god help us all!), Wes Streeting, Yvette Cooper ... I think I'd pick Cooper out of that lot.

Yes. I think she’d win. Female, scandal free, sufficiently big name.

Julen7 · 13/09/2025 13:15

Andy Burnham is also being discussed.

Julen7 · 13/09/2025 13:15

Andy Burnham is also being discussed.

Yes, he’s the darling of a section. But I think he’d lose to a woman. It would be too embarrassing for Labour yet again to have a middle aged white man as leader.

I confess that I can’t see why Burnham is so highly thought of. I don’t recall him being much cop in government.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, I guess.

Julen7 · 13/09/2025 13:29

Yes probably too male, stale and pale and I agree, up till now pretty useless. Has made a complete mess of Manchester by all accounts.
