About 9.30pm about an hour before bed

It’s always locked as it locks itself as soon as you shut it !

We double lock it either when the last person gets home or when going to bed.

You only need to look online in the UK. On Facebook, local neighbourhood sites etc, to see Ring doorbell and CCTV clips of people (lets be honest usually men) trying doors in neighbourhoods, until they find an unlocked one and then go in to the property.
I'm not willing to take that risk for my family, so I keep it locked.

yale lock. Always locked from outside unless we specifically hold down the ‘snib’ to leave it open.

but then, I have been known to leave my keys in the lock from the outside and got away with it a few times.

It's always locked. It can't be opened from outside without a key anyway, and I lock so small kids can't escape. I can't imagine why I want an unlocked front door.

I find this so weird and paranoid! I have a friend who does this who does this -even if I just pop out to fetch something from my car when I’m at hers. Bloody irritating.
I do have a mortice on my front door as well as a yale, but never use it.

Not so much paranoia as I watched someone walk into my house when I was a teenager.
There's nothing to be gained from leaving the door unlocked. It's not weird or paranoid.

Mikart · 09/09/2025 16:25

My door is always locked. Why wouldn't it be?

hiredandsqueak · 09/09/2025 16:29

Our door is locked all day tbh I add the chain when I empty the bin after tidying the kitchen so about 7pm so long as nobody is out or expected to visit anyway.

RaraRachael · 09/09/2025 17:05

Definitely neither weird nor paranoid. What's more weird imo is people leaving their doors unlocked.
Do you then react with surprise when somebody walks in said door and steals something?

garlictwist · 09/09/2025 17:06

Our front door is always locked. Otherwise it would get opened and our stuff would get nicked even when we're in.

kiwiane · 09/09/2025 17:07

I lock my front and back door as soon as I come inside - I don’t understand why you’d risk an open door. Are you insured if you leave them open and you’re robbed?

chattyness · 09/09/2025 17:09

Always locked

Shinysunday · 09/09/2025 17:20

When it gets dark. Our house is fairly unlikely to get burgled in broad daylight because of its position and our neighbours.

ImFineItsAllFine · 09/09/2025 17:24

Generally just before we go to bed. If DH is away and I'm home with our young DC then I'll lock up before I put them to bed as there's nobody downstairs at that point.

Livpool · 09/09/2025 17:26

Our’s locks as soon as it shuts. You can had an extra lock by lifting the handle, which we usually do once we’re all in and not going out again

Yellowview · 09/09/2025 17:31

It automatically locks and I double lock with key in the evening when we aren’t going out. Back door always unlocked as the dog goes in and out until bed time.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 09/09/2025 17:38

Why would you leave it unlocked? There are no advantages. Only downsides.

BCBird · 09/09/2025 17:43

As soon as I get in. Never leave it unlocked.

RaraRachael · 09/09/2025 18:09

Our hortible neighbour used to leave his door wide open jn thd summer. Hd complained that our cat was coming in his house.
So I said "Would you complain if a random person came in and stole something?" He kept his door shut after that.

I live in a low crime rate area.

According to the Police.UK website there were three recorded crimes in our village in June.

Three crimes, not no crimes.
People often post on local social media groups images from their Ring doorbells of scrotes trying house doors and car doors looking for a quick opportunity to steal. These aren't included in the crime figures.

Anyone who thinks it won't happen to them is quite frankly stupid and naive.

LivingWithANob · 09/09/2025 19:27

As soon as i walk through it?

Friday just gone, after I last posted on this thread. Housing estate around my son's school, as I dropped him back there from the dentists, at least 3 police cars on the streets and police going door to door. Quite concerning, so I mentioned it to the school who were unaware. This is a "nice" Barratt housing estate by the way, if I need to add that in.

Anyway, turns out from Facebook that there's recently been a few "break ins" on that estate from people going round trying doors and being successful getting in a couple of them too. Police were checking around for door-cam footage, etc.
