About 9.30pm about an hour before bed

I always lock mine, a habit I developed when I had toddlers in the house over 20 years ago.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 09/09/2025 07:39

Our front door locks as soon as you close it.

We have the back door open/unlocked until DH lets the dog out for his last wee and comes up to bed - normally around 11.30 or so.

Those of you who don’t lock your doors are likely to be wasting your money on home insurance. They won’t pay out for a burglary that happened via an unlocked door as there is no forced entry 🔑

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/09/2025 07:43

It’s double-locked before we go to bed. You need a key to get in anyway, but apparently it’s far too easy to break into unless double locked. Back door and French windows also have extra security.

Happydays321 · 09/09/2025 07:49

Front door is locked when we shut it. If it didn't I'd lock it all the time. I'm not nervous just sensible.

PerhapsPerhapsParsnips · 09/09/2025 07:58

Could everyone include where they live? Surely a terraced house on busy road would have different practices to country manor miles from neighbours.

I live in a small town in Yorkshire which is relatively safe. I lock the door in the evening around 7pm. DH would happily leave it unlocked but I’ve been burgled before, and my cousin had someone come in her home, take her car keys from the kitchen work top and steal her car. Different place but it stuck with me that story!

wineandcheeseplease · 09/09/2025 08:00

Always locked. Chain on when I go to bed .

Ihad2Strokes · 09/09/2025 08:11

Front door is almost always wide open with a door stop when I'm home. Unfortunately in this house it open into the living area, so can see it most of the time. If I'm going into the bedrooms or bathrooms for more than to get something quickly I'll shut the door, then you can't open it without a key.

Previous house didn't open into the living area & didn't automatically lock when you shut it, so it wasn't wide open. But we only locked it when we went to bed, or sometimes earlier if we were all home & were going to all be watching a movie or upstairs. (No one moving around downstairs)

It’s always locked. Back door and gate are too. Why would I leave them open for some opportunist ?

LittleCarrot12 · 09/09/2025 09:06

As soon as I’m home or when the kids are in for the night.

RaraRachael · 09/09/2025 09:41

I live in what could be considered a safe place- Scottish seaside town but a neighbour had her handbag snatched by a man who walked in when she was upstairs.
A guy off his head om something walked into my mother's house when she was watching TV, found her spare car keys and the first she realised was when she heard him starting the engine.

I'd second the comment about house insurance if you don't lock your doors.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 09/09/2025 09:41

It's always locked, people keep leaving the communal front door on the catch so anyone could walk into the block, and as a lone woman it feels safer.

If it was a door you couldn't open from the outside without a key I probably wouldn't bother until I went to bed.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 09/09/2025 09:43

Mine locks when you shut it, but I double lock it on the way up to bed.

The back door spends most of its time unlocked if I'm in the kitchen, but if I'm in and out I lock it as I come back in, and I double check it before I go up to bed.

morellamalessdrama · 09/09/2025 09:57

House on cul-de-sac in a large village, front door is locked when we go to bed which is around 10pm.

indoorplantqueen · 09/09/2025 09:59

When we know nobody is going out again. Might be 8pm but also 10.30.

MouseCheese87 · 09/09/2025 10:04

My front door is the wooden type that locks automatically when you slam it shut. I would probably keep it locked though regardless. My sister leaves her's unlocked and has had randoms walk in with various excuses, wrong house, delivering a package etc.

ICanBuyMyselfFlowers25 · 09/09/2025 10:05

It's always locked as in the yale lock at top automatically closes . We have the mortice lock at the bottom which gets key locked when we go to bed

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 09/09/2025 10:17

I live and have always lived in London… the doors are always locked. But the chain goes on when the last person is in for the night and no one is going out again.

BipolarBabe34 · 09/09/2025 10:17

When we are all in and no one is due round or going out again x

pokewoman · 09/09/2025 10:27

My front door is always locked.

Belladog1 · 09/09/2025 10:29

I have a porch and an inner front door. I lock the front door as soon as I leave the house in the morning, but keep the porch unlocked for deliveries. When I get home, if I'm not expecting anything that day, I lock both doors as I walk in.

The back door is locked when the dogs have had their final wee before bed. But I do have a wall / fence around the back garden, and the gate has a bolt / padlock on it - so no one can get in without a lot of hassle.

rainbowsparkle28 · 09/09/2025 10:29

Mine gets locked whenever I come in. I live by myself though so no need really for it to be unlocked for someone else but also feel more comfortable as by myself knowing someone can’t just wander in. Is just habit now.

captureitrememberit · 09/09/2025 10:31

My door is locked whenever I’m in the house.

Lurleenlumpkin79 · 09/09/2025 10:39

All of the time. You can't trust anybody nowadays, even in niace neighbourhoods. We've heard of people being robbed in the morning in a very nice area. Just keep the key permanently in the door & unlock for guests, deliveries etc.
