What time do you lock your front door at night?

About 9.30pm about an hour before bed

OP posts:

When I remember to, which isn't every night, but when I do remember I lock it when I go to bed. Can't hear anyone knocking on our front door so I don't like to lock it until I'm sure no one will be visiting as people have to come in the first door and knock on the inner one to be heard.

The inner door has a very dodgy lock though and "locks" itself all the time. Its not actually locked but you have to open it in a very specific way, involving pushing in and pulling out at the right moment, so for a casual burglar it might as well be locked.

Ours is usually always locked but I have preschool aged DC so I’m always conscious of escapees 🫠😂
DH works away for weeks on end and I have experience of seeing our house being burgled while in my bed as a child so I’m definitely very over cautious when it comes to locks on doors/windows etc.

DH is the complete opposite and would happily leave everything unlocked. You’ll usually find his car in the drive when he’s home completely unlocked, usually with his wallet sitting on the passenger seat 🙄 sometimes along with the car keys 🙄😂

We do live in a very quiet low-crime area to be fair but you still never know who’s around!!

Someone I work with doesn't lock his car ever. He gave me a lift once and I asked why his car radio was missing, "it got nicked" - hmmm I wonder why! Grin

My door doesn't need a key from the inside, as soon as it closes its locked. I only need the key to get in the house.

Meadowfinch · 09/09/2025 06:10

Our doors are locked unless we're walking through them. I'd forget otherwise.

We haven't had any issue in the whole 15 years we've lived here and I'd like to keep it that way.

What's your next thread going to be OP?

I've got a few suggestions:

Which is your favourite coffee mug?
Do you recycle flimsy plastic?
Where did you fly to when you last went on a plane?
When putting your knickers on do you go right or left leg first?

bloodredfeaturewall · 09/09/2025 06:16

always locked. well yale type locked.
bolt over night by the last person coming home

TwinklyNight · 09/09/2025 06:20

As soon as we come inside.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/09/2025 06:20

Front door locks automatically (Yale lock) and we put on the deadlock at night before bed. Our garden is completely enclosed and surrounded by other gardens that are also completely enclosed (no side entrances or back lane) so it during the day the back doors are often unlocked as we go in and out. They are locked if we are out or at night.

Lulu1919 · 09/09/2025 06:28

Doors always locked ...front and back

Slimagain · 09/09/2025 06:31

I don’t think I’ve ever looked it. Not entirely sure where the key is. Very rural but a little courtyard-type configuration of houses. So never ‘empty’ ,

yikesss · 09/09/2025 06:43

We lock the door as soon as we come in

AutumnalLight · 09/09/2025 06:48

Bed time

IIlII · 09/09/2025 06:50

I always keep it locked unless I’m walking through it.

ResusciAnnie · 09/09/2025 06:55

It just locks whenever it closes so we don’t do anything extra at bedtime. Check all the others (side and back door yales) are locked when we go up to bed.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 09/09/2025 06:59

Those of you saying you lock it on the way to bed or similar, does that mean anyone can walk into your house the rest of the time? The neighbour's, the amazon delivery guy, the dodgy bloke from the next street???

Our door always needs a key to open it. So I guess it's always locked.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/09/2025 07:00

When the cat comes in, usually about midnight. My door is always locked though, I live alone.

PumpkinSeasonOctober · 09/09/2025 07:00

It’s never unlocked.

OhNoNotSusan · 09/09/2025 07:00

you need a key to get into my front door
the back gate is always locked

vickylou78 · 09/09/2025 07:12

Out door is locked all the time.

TheMasterplan23 · 09/09/2025 07:14

I keep our front door locked all the time. The layout of our house means if someone came in the front door they could go straight upstairs/in to kids living room and I wouldn’t hear as I’m mainly in the kitchen/living room which is quite far from the front door.

It annoys my husband but 🤷‍♀️

youngestisapsycho · 09/09/2025 07:15

Door doesn’t open from outside without a key. When last person goes to bed the chain gets put on and the alarm switched on.

TorroFerney · 09/09/2025 07:31

Allseeingallknowing · 08/09/2025 21:49

It’s always locked. Back door and gate are too. Why would I leave them open for some opportunist ?

Snap. And I live in one of the lowest crime rate places in the country where delivery people just leave parcels at the front door.

Lock your doors and don’t leave your car idling to defrost whilst you are in the house.

DinoLil · 09/09/2025 07:34

It's locked all day.

Natsku · 09/09/2025 07:35

If they're in luck and the inner door opens first time then yeah. Most people who come to my house know to just let themselves, I prefer it that way, but they often get stuck at the dodgy inner door. Postie opens the door to leave parcels in the porch rather than outside and I much prefer that. No dodgy bloke on the next street has tried coming in, not sure there even is a dodgy bloke in the next street.
