About 9.30pm about an hour before bed

Mine is locked all the time

Endofyear · 08/09/2025 22:36

Front door you have to open with a key so it's always locked. Back doors I lock when I go to bed. We are mid terrace so I don't think it's likely someone would break in from the back - there's no access unless you climb over from next door neighbours and there's big fences!

MarketSt · 08/09/2025 22:37

Always locked unless we’re in the front garden.

Chain goes across just before bed, DH does it when he puts the dishwasher on before bed.

Also checks the back doors are locked and that the interior door between the utility/garage is locked.

Mamaneedsgin · 09/09/2025 01:44

Our front and back doors are always locked. A family member suffered a sneak in theft through a closed but unlocked front door and I’d never take the risk.

savethatkitty · 09/09/2025 01:49

About 7pm, when I'm doing the dishes

As soon as I come in for the evening after work. Spate of break ins recently in the area so I’d rather be cautious

Beekman · 09/09/2025 02:20

We live in a large, busy city so our door is always locked, in fact it locks automatically when we close it. It’s not inherently unsafe in this area but it is a city with a huge population so you just don’t know. Our living room is up some stairs and even though we have cameras, we wouldn’t actually hear if anyone came in.

My dad lives in a really safe village in the UK but he locks his door all the time as his living room and bedroom are at the back of his house. You do hear occasional stories of thieves opening doors to steal car keys as there are a lot of luxury cars round there.

I genuinely don’t know why anyone leaves their front doors open. What’s the benefit?

Connectingconcrable · 09/09/2025 02:29

My front door is always locked.

Tablesandchairs23 · 09/09/2025 02:38

Mine is always locked.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 09/09/2025 02:39

When the last person up goes to bed

reptilemad1985 · 09/09/2025 02:56

always have it locked had others try the door as live in flats

LillyPJ · 09/09/2025 03:00

I always lock it as soon as I come in. I put the chain on it when I go to bed.

Ponderingwindow · 09/09/2025 03:03

Our door is always locked. We unlock it when the door is used.

Luciey · 09/09/2025 03:08

Always locked, we have a deadlatch on the front door so just turn to lock.

We also always keep our cars locked.

I live in a lovely semi rural area, very safe, low crime but my doors front & back remain locked whenever I’m in the house. All day, all night, as required.

If someone came through my front door and I was at the back of the house in the kitchen for example, I’d never know so I keep myself locked in.
Its second nature to me.

This happened to my grandfather. Someone came in his door unknown to him, was walking around the house, he then went and locked the door and was locked in with them. Can't remember the full detail but the intruder ended up smashing his way out the house and my grandfather had to do emergency repairs to secure his door.
We lock out front door as soon as the last person is in for the day, and if someone goes out for the evening they take their key.

I don’t think it matters where you live, opportunist thieves can be anywhere day or night, and nice areas probably have richer pickings.

If there are a few of us at home and the house is obviously occupied it wouldn’t really cross my mind, but if I’m home alone I’ll lock the doors, especially if I am going upstairs.

This.

Twice in different properties I have had people walk in through an open door. Once in a safe area where people walked in and took my handbag, some change and my Dad's wallet. The other occasion was just a drunk person who was confused but that was scary because they were belligerent and wouldn't go.

BlackCoffeeAndSugar · 09/09/2025 04:31

As soon as I walk in. Too easy for someone to just open and grab a handbag otherwise. Yes it's unlikely but earlier this year we had a guy round trying all doors taking what he could. Very nice area.

DrJump · 09/09/2025 04:47

When we leave the house.
Our front door is rarely locked and the back door only when we go on holidays.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 09/09/2025 04:52

As soon as we come in.. wouldn't give a sneak thief the opportunity.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 09/09/2025 05:16

Kept trying to persuade son to lock his door when home - he lived in a flat in a very dodgy area of Birmingham. He couldn’t be bothered until a large stranger just walked into his lounge one day. It turned out he was looking for the chap upstairs and was very apologetic but it made the point! He locked his door after that.

sashh · 09/09/2025 05:33

Mine automatically locks when you close it, then you can use a key to lock it further. The 'further' locking is a couple of dead bolts coming out from the door in to the frame.

The back door doesn't have the automatic lock but I keep it locked with a key in.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 09/09/2025 05:35

We keep our doors locked as we come and go. It feels safer and we don’t forget at night.

Should add it’s a nice area, it’s not because of that worry tbh. We just prefer it. We aren’t locking ourselves into our homes. The key is next to do the door, we are easily out😂

EnchantedToMeetYou2 · 09/09/2025 05:47

Ours is usually always locked but I have preschool aged DC so I’m always conscious of escapees 🫠😂
DH works away for weeks on end and I have experience of seeing our house being burgled while in my bed as a child so I’m definitely very over cautious when it comes to locks on doors/windows etc.

DH is the complete opposite and would happily leave everything unlocked. You’ll usually find his car in the drive when he’s home completely unlocked, usually with his wallet sitting on the passenger seat 🙄 sometimes along with the car keys 🙄😂

We do live in a very quiet low-crime area to be fair but you still never know who’s around!!

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/09/2025 05:59

Usually before I go to bed usually. Nothing really worth pinching here! During the day I might lock it if I'm upstairs or out the back.
I occasionally forget to check if the back door is locked overnight.
