About 9.30pm about an hour before bed

10 pm - but I’m in bed now and not sure if I’ve locked the patio window 🤪

Front door can't be opened without a key from outside. Back doors are never locked unless we're all away.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 08/09/2025 22:06

Mine has a Yale lock and is always locked unless its open. I lock the back doors around the time it starts to get dark usually but often forget.

Arcticlife · 08/09/2025 22:06

Never locked, cars never locked either with the keys inside, garage door open... Life in rural Norway 😂

Zov · 08/09/2025 22:07

I keep it locked pretty much all the time. Very safe, low crime area, and rural, but you just never know who's popping through. Visitors/strangers/salespeople/criminals! Rural crime is rife in some areas, and I don't want to be a statistic.

JDM625 · 08/09/2025 22:08

Front door locks when the door closes so it can't be open from outside without a key anyway. We could also use the key from inside to lock yet another bolt- but I don't feel the need and it would be a safety issue if trying to get out in a hurry.

This time of years we have the bifolds wide open each day. We only close and lock them at dusk.

MadameTwoSwords · 08/09/2025 22:08

Never. We live in the middle of nowhere, but even when we lived in a city centre flat we didn't lock the door at night. Very trusting, I guess.

NoTouch · 08/09/2025 22:10

I don’t think it matters where you live, opportunist thieves can be anywhere day or night, and nice areas probably have richer pickings.

If there are a few of us at home and the house is obviously occupied it wouldn’t really cross my mind, but if I’m home alone I’ll lock the doors, especially if I am going upstairs.

SpuytenDuyvil · 08/09/2025 22:10

Front door is always kept locked unless we are expecting guests. We normally come in and out through the attached garage. Dcat is annoyed by this, as she would like to come in any door anytime she wants. Obviously.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/09/2025 22:11

We (usually) lock it if we leave the country but otherwise not.

YouOughtToSeeADoctorAboutThat · 08/09/2025 22:12

At whatever time we go to bed - sometimes 10.30, sometimes later

PurpleChrayn · 08/09/2025 22:18

What?? People don’t lock their doors? Ours gets locked the second we get in from anywhere.

SquaredPaper · 08/09/2025 22:22

It’s the kind of front door that locks automatically. The back door is probably open till bedtime.

ihavebecomecomfortablynumb · 08/09/2025 22:25

I live in a tiny, rural village with practically a zero crime rate but the front door is always locked.

Yeah this. As I said, rural crime is rife, and people come from city and town areas, and steal from the farms. One tractor can be worth £70,000. And yeah, they will pop by, masquerading as salepeople, and will rob rural/middle class areas. And also - as you say - opportunists. will swing by 'richer' areas It's not a good idea to leave outside doors unlocked. I can't imagine being alone in our cottage, and going for a shower or a sleep, and leaving the door unlocked. Anyone could walk in!

We keep our front and back door locked. I don’t want to risk a stranger coming into my home. It might be a small risk, but it’s not one I’m willing to take. I’ve watched far too many crime documentaries.

Thissickbeat · 08/09/2025 22:27

It's always locked. So is the back gate.
Back door locked when it gets dark.

Me too. 😆 The things that happen on those crime documentaries stick with you don't they?! 😱

My DH aren’t currently living together but he’s here most evenings. I lock the door when he leaves at 9:30. I usually go to bed within the hour.

Rightsraptor · 08/09/2025 22:27

Depends what you mean by locked.

My front door (wooden) is usually locked, in that you need a key to open it from the outside. So during the day and from the inside you need to turn the knob and also use the handle to open it. But at night, time varies but before I go to bed, I put the dead latch on and also lock the mortise lock.

The back door (composite) it usually locked unless I'm in the kitchen and in & out to the back garden a lot during the day. Locked means locked with that door.

Titsywoo · 08/09/2025 22:28

My front door is always locked

bigwhitedog · 08/09/2025 22:28

Mine is always locked, mostly because my idiot (genius) dog can open doors.

AnonKat · 08/09/2025 22:29

When i first moved into my house, a women bold as brass walked through my front door. She thought it was a different house that she was collecting a sofa from.

I lock my door at all times now.

MyIvyGrows · 08/09/2025 22:29

As soon as I get in. Can’t see the door from the living room or kitchen, so I wouldn’t know if anyone just walked in, especially if I was cooking with the extractor fan on, or had the tv or radio on.

MaryGreenhill · 08/09/2025 22:32

It's always locked and the back door
