OP posts:
Lookingforwardto2025 · 05/09/2025 12:27

DH works in finance.

VegQueen · 05/09/2025 12:28

DH is a management consultant (low six figures) and I lead a data team in the public sector (60k which I wouldn’t have said was high but meets your criteria). We live in London.

Ruggerlass · 05/09/2025 12:29

OH is a Global QHSE Director, mid six figures. I took early retirement

Statsquestion1 · 05/09/2025 12:34

We both work in pharma. Dp on just over 70k and I’m on 50k…Dp is in first level management/supervisory as such so WAY more scope. I’m not far off graduate role, I’m a senior team member so again plenty more scope to increase too.

MiddleAgedDread · 05/09/2025 12:39

private sector consultancy, STEM industry

Amuseaboosh · 05/09/2025 12:44

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 05/09/2025 13:02

DH law into 6 figures. Me household CEO, spender of the said 6 figures! Wink

LoudPlumDog · 05/09/2025 13:04

DH mine manager

MaudlinGazebo · 05/09/2025 13:06

DH law, salaried partner of firm (top 20ish, not SC)

QwestSprout · 05/09/2025 13:08

All SLT positions in FE in Scotland pay more than 60k. One of those.

YahBasic · 05/09/2025 13:10

DH on over 100k in engineering
I’m on 85k in project management

2 kids, mid 30s.

FruitNotCake · 05/09/2025 13:11

Law for me. DH was in finance, he is now retired. Combined income year before his retirement was well over £750k of which we lost 47% in income tax and NI. We worked like dogs 20 hour days at times, both from immigrant parents, both went to state schools but we never tell anyone in real life because people become jealous. I’ve lost count of the number of friends who work part time who describe us as “lucky” we have earned every penny and strived to give our kids what we didn’t have growing up. We sacrificed family time and well being to do well in our careers and build a solid future. We are very fortunate we have not been beset by illness or other disaster that would have prevented us both working. I will name change now as will get abuse as that’s the mumsnet way.

Kuretake · 05/09/2025 13:13

Me, law.

MyTommyGunDont · 05/09/2025 13:13

I’m a director in the Big 4 (£120k) and DH is an operations manager for a household name retailer (£60k + bonus).

HotDogHotDiggityDog · 05/09/2025 13:14

Husband, works offshore on the oil rigs, 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. Just shy of £100k. We have two young children so I just work part time in the travel industry.

Overwhelmedandunderfed · 05/09/2025 13:16

I know I couldn’t do any of these jobs because I don’t know what any of them actually mean 😂 is anyone willing to say how they started off in any of these roles? Obviously the law ones would be a law degree (I think) but what about the pharma and the project management things? Would love a career change! Feel like I have lots of skills (teacher) but a bit out of touch tbh! Not looking to insult anyone as I don’t doubt that you’ve all worked really hard.

LemondrizzleShark · 05/09/2025 13:16

OP it is going to depend so much on where you work - London living wage is £29k, so honestly £50k is not a particularly high wage here. The majority of band 6 nurses will be on £47-52k with London weighting, and not far off without it.

We both started as microbiologists. Neither of us are in lab roles any more. I’m in Compliance and DP manages a team that work in the lab.

SummerInSun · 05/09/2025 13:27

Both lawyers in central London. And we both spent our whole 20s and early 30s at work. On a regular weekday our “time together” was chatting at 11pm at night over the phone from our respective taxis bringing us home from our respective offices. We’d get home and fall into bed side by side.

My route was a bit weird - degree, worked in recruitment, Masters in HR & worked in HR then got involved in a project to recruit and manage skills on a project and saw huge overlap in transferable skills with project management. Ended up impressing the director on that project and asked him to get me a job as a PM.

I’ve also made sure to negotiate high each time I’ve moved jobs. Pre-kids 5 years ago, I was on 35k & have had 2 mat leaves in that time.

Good for you! I’m proud of you (in the least condescending way) as someone that struggles to know their worth).

DH - Diplomat

Me - Former Diplomat and now bog-standard Civil Servant and occasional dog breeder😁

DH hasn't been at home for more than a few weeks at a time for the last 10 years, and for most of the last 22 years we've lived in different countries. But we both love our jobs and it works for us. Combined salary is reasonable.

You really need to ask how old people are and how long it took them to earn that money. A lawyer will build up 6 figures more quickly than, for example, a diplomat...

IDontLikePinaColadas · 05/09/2025 13:40

DP works in IT and I’m in private events.

MinnieMountain · 05/09/2025 13:47

DH is an actuarial consultant.

I’m a residential property solicitor. Could easily be on £60k if I could be arsed to fee-earn.

notthatoldchestnut · 05/09/2025 13:47

Me - Head of Operations £80k. But that’s FT - I work PT so salary is pro rata

DH - maintenance electrician - c£50k
