I am on 100k plus bonus as a Head of Dept at a FTSE 100 Retailer
Partner is on roughly the same as a short haul Pilot (FO), should increase a lot when he is Captain.

We are both 31, no kids

I have a degree in what was my favourite subject at school, chosen without any particular career path in mind, a masters in a more focussed aspect of that, got a graduate position in a large international company where i've moved around different departments and offices, and have a professional chartership.

t'other half meanwhile has bugger all school qualifications, didn't go to uni and earns nearly 3 times what I do.....

Does make you laugh when you see the disparity doesn’t it? I think that’s why I’m a bit envious after all the studying and CPD but I also think it’s good that hard work counts as well.

Mumplus01 · 05/09/2025 14:36

Construction commercial manager. 6 figures

Cantbleedingcope · 05/09/2025 14:38

TheStroppyFeminist · 05/09/2025 14:39

I'd love to show my non academically oriented son. Would you mind expanding on your DH's career? What did he do after GCSEs?

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 05/09/2025 14:42

London black cab driver, around £100k

ComebackStory · 05/09/2025 13:53

Jeez, also in comms on a mere 35k. I live in hope 😭

Excuse my ignorance, but what is comms? Communication?

what does this actually mean? Telephone companies?

AnneElliott · 05/09/2025 14:43

I’m a G6 civil servant on 80k and H is fire safety and building control for a private company and earns around the same.

Blarn · 05/09/2025 14:49

Dh, production manager ina large factory. Around 65k.

Eta: also didn't go to uni, just worked up from manual roles to team leader, manager, shift manager etc.

midlifemumma · 05/09/2025 14:56

DH - Sales manager, environmental (water), just shy of six figures though more with bonuses factored in.

I’m a SAHM.

I'm also in comms and on a measly 35k - 100k feels like fantasy land! It means communications for an organisation - really broad range of roles, could be internal comms or external comms - which could involve press/media relations, social media, branding, email newsletters, blogs, videos, bit of design work,.ghostwriting speeches or articles for the CEO, events - all sorts!

MiddleAgedDread · 05/09/2025 14:59

@TheyWentToSeaInASieve I would say landed on his feet is probably the best way to describe it! He pre-dates GCSEs when not everyone was expected to progress into further education so did practical work for a few years before getting into sales & marketing departments in some big companies that enabled him to get moving up the ladder. I suspect it would be a lot harder to get those roles now though without a degree, unless you could get on some sort of apprenticeship scheme.
For someone who's not academically these days (and I don't mean not clever, some folk just aren't into studying), I'd heavily encourage them to get a trade.

BoredZelda · 05/09/2025 15:00

IT manager and Associate Construction Professional.

Imperfectpolly · 05/09/2025 15:01

I work a 9- 5.30 no overtime job in finance/asset management. I know I am very lucky to have finally found a job in this industry with no expectation over free overtime.

DH has his own business in the construction industry. He supplies and fits items that the business makes.

whatsit84 · 05/09/2025 15:01

I’m 6 figures (low) and in finance. Quite senior.

FastJubileeLine · 05/09/2025 15:03

Law, 300-400k, in London

I’m at UK firm and if I went to a US firm (still based in London), I’d be on up to double that

If I was in the Middle East I’d be earning close to that tax-free

To address some PP comments:

: you don’t need an undergrad law degree to be a lawyer. My advice to youngsters is to do something interesting and add a 1 year postgrad degree on top (preferably funded by the law firm you will train with)

: it absolutely is possible to work 20 hour days in law. 24 hour days are possible too. Been there, done that

Nothankyov · 05/09/2025 15:03

Financial services and law.

whatsit84 · 05/09/2025 15:05

Oh and route- degree, grad scheme and then worked up.

Thortour · 05/09/2025 15:05

DH Had his own company and is mid six figures
I’m a teacher and I earn enough to pay for a room in the house my DH can afford for us.
He sees me as an equal so let’s me use the whole house.

I’m a mid-high-level Civil Servant (not SCS) so not on much more than I’d like but I have interesting work streams with amazing access. OH works in the City and earns stupid money. Even by our standards, the money is a lot more than we expected. I could be a SAHD if I wanted to be but I’m very much following my passion in Whitehall policy 😂

Hoolihan · 05/09/2025 15:08

My OH contracts on £950 a day working in IT for one of the big banks (trading).

I earn £26k working for a charity 😂

tiredmumof2zzzz · 05/09/2025 15:12

Product owner for an IT solution. Make about 67k before tax, so not a super high earner. Have done tech related consulting work before as well. My job now is pretty easy and chill for the money. My study background is in business.

MyJoyousKoala · 05/09/2025 15:14

I’m a civil servant (Grade 7) with a salary of £72k.
