I’m a self-employed Technology and Strategy Consultant, earning on average around £150k a year. If you’re considering retraining, take a look at Supermums – I know a few people who’ve successfully used that route to get into Salesforce.

joseph25 · 05/09/2025 15:22

I work in research and make c.£130k and DP is in product dev and earns £60k. Both mid forties. I couldn’t earn the same elsewhere and know it will come to an end at some point

TattiePants · 05/09/2025 15:23

Me - chartered accountant & project mgr
DH - civil engineer & project mgr

Actually, I’m no longer a high earner as I moved into the voluntary sector earning significantly less than my previous salary. I love my job but know I’m in a very privileged position as my previous salary / DH’s current salary allows me to do something that makes a real difference to people’s lives.

Lafufufu · 05/09/2025 15:26

I'm also in comms and on a measly 35k - 100k feels like fantasy land! It means communications for an organisation - really broad range of roles, could be internal comms or external comms - which could involve press/media relations, social media, branding, email newsletters, blogs, videos, bit of design work,.ghostwriting speeches or articles for the CEO, events - all sorts!

Ah I see! Thanks so much for the explanation.

whereismymindd · 05/09/2025 15:29

Company secretary - circa £100k plus bonuses
Security consultant - circa £80k plus bonus

Evo20 · 05/09/2025 15:31

I know people earning high salaries in all sorts of industries.

They are typically fairly senior - and the majority probably across the usual finance, tech, consulting, law, medicine jobs.

But I also know people in education, communications, advertising, oil and gas, HR, EAs to CEOs etc etc

GingerIsBest · 05/09/2025 15:33

The job type is only part of the pay package - the sector you work in makes a huge difference as does the specifics.

Look at the people on this thread who work in Communications. Salaries range massively. Obviously, part of that is seniority. But part of it is sector and part of it is the type of role - Media Relations is often better paid than internal communications for example. Communications working in a retail sector outside of London will pay significantly less. I work in Communications in Financial Services in London, at a senior level, and I am currently negotiating a new role with total comp of 180-200k.

Re how people get here, I agree that it's a combination of having the right skills (gained through education/trainign or just natural and then enhanced on the job), and then the sector/natural skills you have to be better. And a bit of luck. If I look at comms - I know plenty of people I have met over the years who have done extremely well and at a very high level. I've met some who could have, but perhaps chose not to. And I have met many who don't have the skills or personality or interest to work at the at the level, or in the sectors, where the pay is higher. But it does always throw me how disparate the salaries are.

Crapola25 · 05/09/2025 15:35

Set up a business as a freelance fashion designer offering consultancy, live abroad so pay less tax but typically clear between 9 and 10k per month. Work evey day, and sometimes 10 day weeks, demanding clients, alot of stress but love my job.

Crapola25 · 05/09/2025 15:36

DH used to earn 300k but now earns 150k.

wldpwr · 05/09/2025 15:41

Designing microchips (electronic engineering degree).

EmmaStone · 05/09/2025 15:43

My industry is fairly well paid (media), and everyone who manages other people is on £60k+.

DH and I both in finance, started with graduate roles in Big 4 accountancy firm.

Any industry that generates a lot of profits is likely to pay well (eg banks/financial institutions/law).

The way to make A.LOT. of money is to run your own (profitable) business that you can sell elsewhere. Pretty stressful though!

YahBasic · 05/09/2025 15:44

Overwhelmedandunderfed · 05/09/2025 13:29

Good for you! I’m proud of you (in the least condescending way) as someone that struggles to know their worth).

Thank you. It took me a long time and a lot of work, but felt like if I am able to advocate for everyone else, then I deserve the same!

I’d love to eventually go into coaching & supporting more women in work.

Evo20 · 05/09/2025 15:47

I’d also add - I think most people earning £150-200k+ often will be getting a lot of their income from bonuses / dividends, rather than all just salaried.

Which makes their incomes quite variable and unpredictable.

At least 50% of my income I’m never really sure about, so I live to the amount I’m paid monthly - and anything over that is basically thrown at savings / investments / big purchases when I receive it.

AnneElliott · 05/09/2025 14:43

I’m a G6 civil servant on 80k and H is fire safety and building control for a private company and earns around the same.

@AnneElliott are you in London? Where I am at, G6 is only 70k

Pastaandoranges · 05/09/2025 15:52

Technology consultant for a tech consultancy, specialising in marketing technology and AI and do some freelance work on the side occassionally. Earnings swing between 120k to 180k depending on side work and bonuses.

lighteningthequeen · 05/09/2025 15:52

Civil service policy for me. Energy for DH.

I’m my case all of the above and more! I’m at manager level, third sector so piss poor pay.

AnneElliott · 05/09/2025 15:58

Yes @MissEacekim in London and at one of the better paying Departments. I’m not even at the top of my pay scale.

EternalDreamer · 05/09/2025 16:01

Me - investor relations at hedge fund, well into 6 figures. Started off in admin and took opportunities as they presented themselves.
OH - STAD

MissEacek · 05/09/2025 15:51

I’d guess DWP, HO, or HMRC with DDaT or other professional qualification bumping the salary up through RRA. FCDO can hit that and more too if on overseas posting. Or they’re a SpAd. Or contractor. Quite a lot of ways to hit the salary under SCS.

Lakeyloo · 05/09/2025 16:03

Specialist recruitment/Headhunting in a niche area. Base salaries are not quite the £60k but the commission on top is good

elvisisaliveandwell · 05/09/2025 16:04

DH is a barrister- earns between 400-500k usually (Gross). Pretty good work life balance now but worked harder when younger. Didn't take a straightforward route to the Bar. Some of the barristers at his chambers earn much more. Most of his criminal barrister friends earn much less.
The last salary I had was about 20 years ago and was earning around £70k as a pretty average management account about 10 years post qualification with a 'Big 4 ' firm. When we met 25 years ago our salaries were much more similar.

blondebombsite13 · 05/09/2025 16:06

LondonPapa · 05/09/2025 15:08

I’m a mid-high-level Civil Servant (not SCS) so not on much more than I’d like but I have interesting work streams with amazing access. OH works in the City and earns stupid money. Even by our standards, the money is a lot more than we expected. I could be a SAHD if I wanted to be but I’m very much following my passion in Whitehall policy 😂

amazing access to what?

RomeoRivers · 05/09/2025 16:08

DH is a self taught software developer and runs his own business trading on the financial markets. Only did GCSEs and college. Early 30s, averages 1m.

I’m a SAHM. Was an English teacher before the kids.
