DH is a scientist and earns USD 500k plus bonuses. I don’t work anymore because I was earning peanuts in comparison. No regrets, there are many other ways to lead a fulfilled life and now I can travel with my husband and I’m not knackered and pissed off all the time. Realising how fortunate I am helps.

wldpwr · 05/09/2025 16:24

Will add my partner the microchip designer has really excellent work/life balance, in my opinion, doesn't work more than 40 hrs/week on average. £150k ish plus £100k plus in shares/bonuses.

Kpopdemons · 05/09/2025 16:29

TheNightingalesStarling · 05/09/2025 16:38

DH is Army. He got his current salary by work his way up. (From TA Private, through officer selection for the regular Armythen up the officer ranks).
He has got a degree (a 2:2) but it wasnt strictly necessary... they told him to go to university for maturity when he 18.

ParmaVioletTea · 05/09/2025 16:48

Academic. Reached a high-ish salary in my late 50s by working my arse off in my 20s through to my 50s - 6 day weeks, 10+ hour days, and sacrificed a family life. Taking on leadership roles (to the detriment of my health at times). It took a long time and the preparedness to move cities & countries. But my starting salary was less than the salary of the PA to a Golden Circle lawyer friend of mine! And most academics get paid not much more than teachers or nurses, but with far higher qualifications & entry standards into the profession.

I think what lots of posters on this thread have in common is that most of us worked our butts off in our 20s, 30s, and 40s. It pays off later if your health holds. It might be too late to do this in your 40s.

AnneElliott · 05/09/2025 16:52

Definitely not a Spad @LondonPapa - perish the thought! And no other qualifications either other than my original BA that got me into the CS.

NKU2029 · 05/09/2025 16:59

DP is a salaried GP who would be on £116k if they worked full time (which they don’t)

After800Years · 05/09/2025 17:03

I’m a commercial director in construction. My background is quantity surveying.

I earn 6 figures basic and almost double it with bonuses.

No degree, half decent a levels and worked my way up.

I have members of my team 4 steps below me on the career ladder earning £60k.

Quantity surveying is one of those jobs that you either know of or have no idea about. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who was thinking about accounting but think it’s too boring. It’s a lot of numbers but with site visits and negotiation thrown in.

DH earns the salary in your OP as a trade

I’m a civil servant (Grade 7) with a salary of £72k.

Have you been at that level for a long time? When I see jobs at that grade the salary seems much lower even in London. Or does it depend on the department?

endoflevelbaddy · 05/09/2025 17:09

I'm in Pharma, senior key account manager in rare disease with 20 years experience, earning 6 figures

It depends on department. The more prestigious the department (at least appearance wise), the less you earn. Anything ops heavy like Home Office or DWP, they pay a lot more than HMT or Cab. Off. for example.

PetuniaPetuniaPetunia · 05/09/2025 17:42

My husband is an engineer in the oil and gas industry earns c£150k plus bonuses. I work as an E.A. and my salary is £70k. It’s take a while to work my way up!

This is the top of the scale in one of the devolved administrations, so the pay scales differ to the UK civil service.
