Labour isn't working - Thread 7

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks @EasternStandard

I see that Starmer has just refused to say whether he'll sack Rayner or not. Not exactly a ringing endorsement is it?

Just a little point of order. If we on this thread go poking the bear on the other thread, that is an open invitation for those posters to do the same here. If that happens, both threads are ruined and pointless for all.

In anticipation of my little friend popping up to remind me, I have posted once on the Labour chat thread. It was an article about Reeves lying on her CV. I regretted it instantly and will never do so again. I value the courtesy that both sides adhere to, which is to not intrude and leave each other alone. There are plenty of open threads for arguing our different points.

I have never posted on that thread because I respect their space but I know they lurk on ours so I see no issue with doing that.

Upstartled · 04/09/2025 17:03

Ed Balls is saying Rayner is a hypocrite for not resigning given her zeal for demanding resignations in her political career.

I wonder what the Home Secretary thinks? I'm trying to remember if we've seen Cooper playing the sympathy card on her behalf?

I hear you, I really do.
I debate on other threads with those of a different opinion to mine most days. I am extremely tolerant, and am happy to chat with anyone who is polite and respectful.
But....
Many of us have been on the receiving end of some hefty abuse for our views over the years on other threads. I wanted to create a 'safe space' on an otherwise left-leaning site. Labour supporters also have their 'safe space' and I respect that. Both threads are echo chambers, but that's ok. Sometimes you just want to chat with people who have a similar view.

This! Please let’s keep this as a calm, funny, supportive, kind place for those of us despairing of what this government is doing for those actually much less fortunate than us.
Plenty of other places on here for those still banging the Labour drum, or who want to make personal attacks on posters.

Blimey Ed Balls talking sense, whatever next. Wonder if the missus has her eye on the deputy job.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/04/its-a-disgrace-rayners-constituents-call-for-her-resignation-after-stamp-duty-row

Brian Kays, 64, worked on the railways for 40 years and describes himself as a Labour supporter. He said Rayner’s future should depend on the outcome of the investigation by the prime minister’s standards adviser.

However, “we’ve all got to be treated fairly,” he said. “Being an MP, you gotta be clean as clean. Even if she’s found not guilty, I think she should step down from the deputy anyway. It’s not going to go away, is it?”

‘It’s a disgrace’: Rayner’s constituents call for her resignation after stamp duty row

In Ashton-under-Lyne there is little sympathy for the deputy prime minister’s tax troubles

Beautifully done. I've seen so many similar videos on my feed today. There is so much material out there. Hypocracy at its finest.

I meant to post this on here earlier but somehow put it on the wrong thread. Anyway, I saw the post earlier on X. I’m stunned at the absolute gall they have posting something like this. I’m a working person and I certainly don’t feel any better off!

They have every right to be angry. Rayner was already forcast to lose her seat, even before this debacle.

Don’t know if you listen to Political Currency but he and George actually do talk a lot of sense.

I listen to TRIP (and TRIP US) too but find I’m more often than not rolling my eyes at Alistair and Rory. A shame really as at one stage I did think Rory could have made a decent Leader of the Conservatives.

I’m obviously not an expert on the ins and outs of Labour Party rules, but am I right in thinking Starmer can’t sack her as Deputy because it’s a voted for position? He can only take away her role as Housing Minister?

Find Out Now polling on Angela Rayner

I wonder if the 50% of 2024 Labour voters who think that Rayner should stay are the very same 50% of Labour who haven't jumped ship to other parties or to complete political apathy?

Yes, that's how I understand it, because the role of deputy pm is a party elected title.

I think he could sack her from her roles as housing minister and deputy pm, but not her role as deputy leader of the labour party.

Surely she has to go as housing minister?
