This bloke has got it right! I'm going to order a bunch of other flags and put them on the local lamp posts that the neighbourhood racists are monopolising!

What’s odd is that I have travelled through 7 European countries this summer, I didn’t see one other flag being flown. Why is it just our country who suddenly feel the need to start draping badly printed, non ironed, B&M flags over railings?

On this very thread, there is someone complaining about 1 million migrants a year - the vast majority of which ARE legal migrants. So there are many people who DO believe that legal migrants shouldn’t be here and are a threat to our culture.

They just don’t want foreigners here, end of story. Please don’t pretend that this isn’t happening.

1 in 7 people having come to the country in the last 10 years would be a threat to our culture, yes. That's a pretty long way from saying that 'legal immigrants shouldn't be here'. Apply just a tiny bit of thought.

@Thingyfanding one of my parents is non-British, so you definitely haven't hit a nerve 😂 I find it unpleasant to hear you insult my fellow Brits (and yes, I do consider myself British - as I expect many 2nd generation citizens do) just because you are incapable of critical thought and tolerance.

Unless you have been in coma for a few years and only just awoken, you would or at least should KNOW that mainly Fascists, the uneducated and the elderly longing to go back to the good old days, are flying the flags. This is not going to end well for this country.

I agreed with you until you talked about the elderly. I'm elderly and I can remember the racist attacks of the 70s (petrol bombs and faeces through letter boxes, p* bashing on the streets), those were not the good old days.

Each country has their own way of protesting against a government which isn't listening. The French are going for “Boycott, disobedience and solidarity” , and planning to bring their country to a standstill on 10th September. British people are putting up flags.

There are quite a lot of people who think something needs to change. They will have different takes on the problem and the solution. Furthermore, most people are able to hold more than a single thought at the same time.

I think that both legal and illegal immigration are currently way too high, and that it is urgent to address this.

I'd like legal migration back to '90s levels (eg < 200k immigrants total/ 100k net), with a big emphasis on skilled migration (useful skills, not excuses like 'blogger' - which is currently on the skilled mugration list). And far more attention paid to integration - both in giving visas initially and on approving the progression through ILR and citizenship.

And I'd like illegal immigration down to Denmark levels. Which is under 1000. And only the ones who are approved staying after initial decision - no costly appeals which take years.

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/09/2025 08:38

The flags do not bother me and I am a mixed race woman. I do object on a personal level to being called a person of colour which has been imported from America. I’m sure many others don’t. But see how things make people feel differently.

All people are born somewhere, then there is how they feel about their birth country versus how they feel about their heritage. That can be quite complex.

Overall the country needs more net providers. Migration should be pinpointed and available where there is a shortage of workers in that area only.

Again. What precise aspects of our culture would be threatened by this figure you keep repeating? What would it mean about the average age of our population and the amount of tax people would be paying?

I get that the world is scary at the moment. But we have traditionally been strong because we are a nation of mongrels.Variety means a better ability to adapt.

Annihilation is almost guaranteed if we start dehumanising people who are not the same as us, stop mixing with each other, and show no compassion to people seeking asylum. That's a practical issue not an emotional one. When we have closed our doors and we're tanking because we have no relationships with anyone around us and the majority of us are old and unable to earn, who is going to help us? No one. Because we obsess over a nostalgic and inaccurate idea about who we are as a nation instead of engaging with the world as it actually is now.

strawberrybubblegum · 04/09/2025 08:42

Poppingby · 03/09/2025 22:23

Birth rates are declining and the population is ageing. We need more people so the figures you're giving are more than sustainable, they're desirable.

I'm not somebody who cares about the number of people not being born here in 10, 20, or 100 years' time because I don't see why it matters, but even if I were, do I think our culture can survive that? Yes I do, because our culture has been a hotchpotch of those who invaded us and those we invaded for literally thousands of years. That is who we are as a culture. If you're not taking about race here as I suspect you are, which elements of our culture are not already based on being a country of immigrants since pre-1066?

Comparing the current demographic changes to the Norman invasion really isn't doing your argument any favours 😂 I suggest you read up about the consequences of the Norman invasion on the native population, some of which still carry through to today eg around land ownership 😂

I wasn't comparing it. It is one example of how we are not 'pure blooded' which is what this is really about.

No. It's not.

You're projecting.

If it isn't, then I suggest people stop using the flag that has been used by the national front, skinheads, football hooligans, and other thugs for years to make their point.

xanthomelana · 03/09/2025 09:03

Don’t see what the problem is. One of my neighbours has been flying his Polish flag for years and no one has ever batted an eyelid. We are in Wales though and don’t usually get as triggered about flags as you seem to in England.

So, Welsh people wouldn't be upset by a load of English flags appearing in their towns? I see.

It's not for you to tell people how to protest.

strawberrybubblegum · 04/09/2025 10:01

The fact that you are trying to frame the protest as racist - to make yourself feel superior - is part of what they're protesting about.

Would you say that in Scotland or Wales. That they need to take the Saltire or the Y Ddraig Goch down?

You sound like my teenagers. Sure, you can use a racist symbol to make a protest about immigration. Just don't be surprised when people call you racist.

moose17 · 04/09/2025 10:39

I think the moral of the story is it not to give two shits about what other people think. When you try to live for everyone else’s narrative we stop living for ourselves. We live in a day and age now where some people think it’s only their opinion that counts and they’re superior to the rest of us. If calling someone racist makes them feel better about themselves who are we to take that away from them. Just live your life because at the end of the day only you truly know who you are.

So you're flying the St Georges flag as a message to... yourself?

moose17 · 04/09/2025 10:46

Yes in part because I’m British I’m proud to be so.

Yes in part because I’m British and proud to be so why should I have to hide that just because of someone else else’s narrative who has never met me?

It's not pp framing it that way. The campaign, started by Yaxley-Lennon and co is openly racist. If you are not following him you need to read up on what it's all about.

I have always had a St George flag up along side a Canadian flag as that’s where my husband is from. Our flags have been up in our garden for just under four years now when we moved to to are forever home.

Well, if you've always done it, carry on, no problem. Most people are complaining about the current Raise the Flags campaign of flags hanging out of windows, half way up lamposts and loosely tied to motorway bridges. You obviously have nothing to do with this.

Our country's flag is not a racist symbol. It's the symbol of our country.

As for comparing protestors to your teenager: the difference is that your son presumably lives in your house, whereas other voters have exactly as much say in how the country is run as you do. Much as you hate that.

How well do you think trying to impose your authority on your son will work in, say, 10 years time?
