This bloke has got it right! I'm going to order a bunch of other flags and put them on the local lamp posts that the neighbourhood racists are monopolising!

Right, I'll go tell my neighbour not to fly his Irish flag because once upon a time it was used to signal allegiance to a terrorist organisation.

Some twits decided to attach them to the barriers of the duel carriage way (those little hand held ones that you wave at parades etc). Its just stupidity.

The councils are having to remove any in dangerous places... so money from more important services being diverted.

People are just idiots.

If the people hanging them are so proud, why are they doing under cover of darkness while wearing balaclavas in my area?
Hang them on your own property if you must, like the Polish neighbour mentioned up thread. Not all over the lamp posts. Not by damaging public property that then costs councils money to repair. Not by graffiti on Mosques. Etc.

It's an interesting one. I worked with a girl who is from Wales and for years she was allowed to have a Welsh flag on her desk. I think it's a class flag - love the dragon etc. But because of where we live, if someone else had put a Union Jack on there desk it wouldn't have been allowed.

We must be the only country on the planet who are not allowed to be proud of our national flag. Well, I was born in England and I’ll jolly well fly the flag if I feel like it. Thus far I haven’t, but if you try to trample on my rights, I will. Britain still has much to be proud of, so why not embrace that fact? As a child, I lived abroad - in one country, you could be fined for not flying the flag on national days and holidays.

So where are all these English people going around acting like Nazi’s? I’m sure it would have made the news if behaviour this extreme was happening or is this an over exaggeration and people are doing something that you don’t agree with so it must be wrong?

How do you feel about fascists like Tommy Robinson using the flag as a means of racial oppression?

There have been tonnes of rallies and protests where large gangs of thugs have gathered outside migrant hotels shouting threats and abuse at ethnic minorities. Do you not read the papers? Threatening graffiti everywhere.

Or maybe you’re like the Germans who said “We want the Jews gone because they’re not pure-blooded natives; they’re wrecking our economy and don’t mix” and then just turned a blind eye when they were shipped off to the ghettos and then deported to death camps.

You must be blind if you can’t see the similarities.

I have nothing against flags, but I'm starting to think that these crazy threads about fascists are started with the intention of pissing off normal people so much that they go out and hang a few more.

It's not fascist to fly the English flag. It just isn't. It may be seen as lower-class by some which I suspect is more of an issue. And then there's the fad of despising your own country that's indulged in by middle-class wannabe-intelligentsia all over the world. The argument that someone who doesn't have white skin might be upset holds no water: either you're exploiting them as an excuse for your own fussiness or it'd be rather rude, imagine if someone from England went to their ancestral country and complained about their flag, they'd rightly be castigated.

There are quite a few flags where I live - I was surprised to see so many tbh. But then I live in a deprived sink estate which probably automatically condemns me as being a lager-swilling racist scrounger by the mumsnet court, no evidence or appeal allowed.

Go for it. I wouldn't want to be labelled a nazi, but you do you.

Why would anyone in their right mind call someone a nazi for flying an England flag? The hysteria has gone too far.

I think it’s absolutely shameful if we allow our flags to be demeaned. We must ensure that our national flags remain associated with our nation - which is all the more reason to fly the flag and ensure that it is seen as a national emblem that represents our country.

Because Tommy Robinson and his gang of nationalist thugs are Nazis. They have stolen our flag, and most of the people who are protesting, and painting roundabouts at the moment are his disciples.

I read an account by someone who lives near a migrant hostel. They had never had any trouble from the migrants but their children were terrified of the gangs of shouting white men outside, keeping them awake at night and urinating in their front garden.

Of course they're doing it to protect the women and children! Like fuck they are as nearly half of those arrested had previous convictions for violence against women.

My mate in Kirkby isn't a nazi. Her schoolgirl daughter was repeatedly followed and propositioned, she wasn't allowed to go out on her own any more. But she was called nazi and racist by her own MP and others and by bussed-in activists for trying to speak out about the very real threat.

With you on this, flags have gone up all around where I live and I cant help but feel the intent behind it is negative.

I kind of don't like overt displays of patriotism full stop. I'm British, and I love this little island, would never choose to live anywhere else - but to be inanely proud because by complete chance you happened to be born in, or have chosen to live in, a specific country just seems odd to me.

And my daughter has repeatedly been followed, harassed and groped just down the road from Kirkby. Where were these vigilantes then? They don’t give a shit about women or girls when they’re being threatened by white men.

Sex abuse is a man problem - not a brown man problem.

I don’t know that the current flying of flags is inherently racist - those who are attaching Union Jacks and St George’s Crosses right now are not necessarily a homogenous bunch.

That being said, the flying of national flags in other countries is, I assume, an established culture. It just isn’t in England unless it’s for specific national commemorative or celebratory occasions. If they want flags to become a year- round nationwide thing then it would be more transparent if they raised a petition so that it can be properly debated in Parliament.

So to people who say they are putting them up now because they are proud to be British, I say “Why now? What is it right now that has made you proud to be British?” Are they going to maintain the flags as the weather does its worst to them? I suspect these flags will lose their colour over the winter and disintegrate in time and councils that haven’t already spent our limited council tax funds removing them will be forced to do so.

When I was a teenage girl I was followed and propositioned by white men. That wasn't OK either but the problem is men. I repeat the statistics I quoted above over 40% of men arrested for migrant protests had previous convictions for violence against women and girls. It's appalling and the right wing thugs are using women to further their racist intentions.
Another statistic I saw today 83% of men are white. 88% of convicted sex offenders are white.

We are in the U.K. there is nothing wrong with flying U.K. flags, if someone views themselves as a different nationality then they should not be granted U.K. citizenship. Of course people have different heritages but that doesn’t mean they have to raise a flag to counter a U.K. flag

Yvette Cooper has said everyone should be flying the flags if they wantvto. Are you saying she is a fascist and a racist?
