I'd rather see a focus on delivery.... changing the personal wont improve Lab's fortunes.
e.g new build approvals lowest for 12 months, blamed on new safety authority, regardless, that needs sorting.

Nothing on dentistry...

PandoraSocks · 05/09/2025 15:08

Cooper for deputy PM?

placemats · 05/09/2025 15:12

PandoraSocks · 05/09/2025 15:05

That would be madness. He is absolutely hated. The media will do their utmost to bring him down, too.

Lammy is well liked in political circles which is why he should stay as Foreign Secretary. No female politician is going to replace Rayner - why put your family through all that?

Edited

Dentistry relies on uptake from existing dentists. It's the newly qualified dentists that may bite - pun intended.

bombastix · 05/09/2025 15:15

Well David Lammy should not be DPM unless he’s giving up the FCDO. Not a fan.

There doesn’t need to be a DPM.

Rayner… well she is the architect of her own misfortune. Her resignation probably means she has some ability to get back into government later. It does go to her judgment though. Public life brings scrutiny, privilege and the need to tick boxes. She doesn’t appear to have done it to screw HMRC out of money but that was the net effect of what she has done.

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2025 15:17

What about Steve Reed for DPM.

I'd like to see Cooper in the mix.

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2025 15:19

Unrest in Scotland over the removal of Murray , a real Starmerite and once the only Labour MP in Scotland. Odd.

Agreed. Safest bet would be Streeting probs (in terms of not winding the right wing up) but he can’t do that and Health and he’s having success there at the moment

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2025 15:20

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I cannot stand Streeting.

Need to remind myself what the left of the party thinks does not matter.

Cooper for deputy PM?

Oo that’s a thought she’s very calm and a good speaker/taker down of people not on top of their brief.

I suspect it is about delivery - those in the positions aren’t delivering fast enough so try someone else.

placemats · 05/09/2025 15:22

Part of the statement from Lucy Powell, who is no longer Leader of the House. Why

"This has not been an easy time for the Government. People want to see change and improvements to their difficult lives. Nor in politics more generally, not least with the rise of abuse, misrepresentation, social-media echo chambers and the call for easy answers. As women in public life, we experience this all the more. The future of our democracy looks uncertain and Parliament and representational politics has an important role to play.

"Living and raising my children in my home city of Manchester has always given me a different perspective of politics. My first job has always been to represent the residents of Manchester Central, and I look forward to using my voice and my role on in Parliament to ensure they see the change they long for."

I didn’t like him (also to the left of the current PLP) but I heard a long form interview with him (O’Brien’s podcast maybe?) and I warmed to him.

BestIsWest · 05/09/2025 15:29

Isn’t DPM elected?

TokyoSushi · 05/09/2025 15:31

Twitter seems to think that Cooper is moving out and Shabana Mahmood is moving in to the Home Office, no word where Cooper is moving to

PickAChew · 05/09/2025 15:32

Deputy leader is.

SerendipityJane · 05/09/2025 15:34

BestIsWest · 05/09/2025 15:29

Isn’t DPM elected?

Deputy Prime Minister has no real standing in the UK constitution.

That said, it's always a good idea to have a clear line of authority for contingency. And it's a useful position to balance a party with powerful backbenchers.

I'm not sure I ever will.

BestIsWest · 05/09/2025 15:43

Ah! I was confusing the two!

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2025 12:56

She was warned to get additional advice and didnt.
I appreciate its sometimes easy to overlook those caveats but they are included for a reason.
And given her profile she should have gone belt and braces.

There will be a lot of vitriol - not entirely due to her getting outside of her lane but I suspect there is a lot of pent up anger still about Johnson being forced out (by his cabinet). I imagine this might feel like recompense.

Agree.

Im sad it’s come to this as I really wanted her to be leader of Labour.

However she knows she can’t fart without it being scrutinised. As much as she shouldn’t have to be far more whiter than white than anyone else she knows the media bay for her blood and she knows the current Reform environment will mean even more scrutiny and she should have taken more advice - probably more than most.

I hope she comes back though.

placemats · 05/09/2025 15:50

So the consensus seems to be that working class female Labour party members have to be whiter than white when it comes to public and media scrutiny?

I agree. I’ve always admired Cooper as much as Rayner.

What also boils my piss is that if Labour choose a man because of the vitriol towards successful woman they’ll be judged for that too.

They cannot win because those in the media won’t allow it.

The defence of Farage's tax affairs is reminiscent of the Johnson days
