Ethics watchdog Sir Laurie Magnus said Angela Rayner had “acted with integrity
and with a dedicated and exemplary commitment to public service” but concluded she breached the ministerial code over her tax affairs, reports the PA news agency.

From his report

''She believed that she relied on the legal advice she had received, but unfortunately did not heed the caution contained within it, which acknowledged that it did not constitute expert tax advice and which suggested that expert advice be sought.

I am conscious of the acute challenges ministers face – perhaps uniquely – in managing the demands of their personal lives and their public responsibilities. However, the responsibility of any taxpayer for reporting their tax returns and settling their liabilities rests ultimately with themselves''

.

PickAChew · 05/09/2025 12:40

I think whatever the outcome of the report, AR would have felt that her continuation in her role was too much of a distraction.

I shall be sewing things rather than venturing into the cesspit, this afternoon.

PandoraSocks · 05/09/2025 12:44

Stupid error on her part. Really stupid. Why in God's name didn't she follow that advice?

I am extremely sad that it has come to this, Angela Rayner was an enormous asset to Labour and it will be difficult to find someone with her charisma and ability to relate to ordinary people to replace her in Government 😔

Yeah. It is pointless. What she did was completely indefensible, but the vitriol is off the scale.

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 12:51

Ah fuck.

I am not blaming her for resigning, she has enough to cope with.

Who would want to be a woman in politics, especially from her background.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 12:53

And how do you feel about that?

What a fiasco and what a sad end to her career, at least for now.

There will be much joy elsewhere.

You are correct - evidently there is much joy elsewhere.

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2025 12:56

She was warned to get additional advice and didnt.
I appreciate its sometimes easy to overlook those caveats but they are included for a reason.
And given her profile she should have gone belt and braces.

There will be a lot of vitriol - not entirely due to her getting outside of her lane but I suspect there is a lot of pent up anger still about Johnson being forced out (by his cabinet). I imagine this might feel like recompense.

Alexandra2001 · 05/09/2025 12:57

Having once had to pay the higher level of SLDT, its almost impossible to avoid, mine was due to an inheritance...HMRC rules on "interest in a property" is wide ranging.

I initially believed her that she'd sought the correct advice, v sad she didn't, huge damage to the Govt.

FFS Why???? She is surrounded by people who can point her to expert advice.

As you are a poster on the Labour isn't working thread, you might want to read TheNuthatch's sensible post.

That is all I have to say.

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 13:01

She was wrong not to seek tax advice but she was hounded out

Is goady use of the heart reaction a breach of Talk guidelines, I wonder?

BBC news has Starmers letter to her and it's written in light blue ink. Possibly berol pen

The handwritten letter is a lovely and personal touch

"embodiment of social mobility" 👏

No harm in asking MNHQ for clarification?

placemats · 05/09/2025 13:10

What are the Daily Fail and Torygraph going to do now?

They are certainly NOT going to promote Kemi Badenoch.

Back to the fabulous Nadine I suspect.

It's upsetting news, but still those gloating scum have FOUR MORE YEARS of A LABOUR GOVERNMENT.

Angela Rayner still remains one of the most successful politicians from someone from her background.

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 13:12

At least Angela Rayner takes the Ministerial Code serious.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 13:13

At least Angela Rayner takes the Ministerial Code serious.

She should NEVER have put herself and the Govt in this position.

She was advised to get specialist advice and didn't.

I so much wanted to believe that, as she said, she had been given bad advice, she didn't even bother getting any...

This country has suffered 14 years of the Tories and their fucks up, i expected something better, they messed up on expenses and now she has dragged the party down several notches.

Evenstar · 05/09/2025 13:19

Just seen this, so for clarity it’s OK for Daily Telegraph readers?

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2025 13:21

I don't think she has Alexandra

She made a mistake, admitted it, referred herself to the standards commission and resigned within a week.

Laurie Magnus says - “I believe Ms Rayner has acted with integrity and with a dedicated and exemplary commitment to public service"

Of course they won't. For people who bang on about 'woke nonsense', they are an incredibly sensitive lot who feel marginalised.

BBC has yet to go discuss it.

Evenstar · 05/09/2025 13:25

A certain Mr Zahawi saw no reason to resign over his unpaid taxes which only came to light due to Dan Neidle’s investigation. Angela Rayner has behaved honourably unlike many members of the previous government.
