Hyped-up activities that are actually shite.

Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

This thread has been brilliant! I’ve learned something new as well about pumpkin picking - who knew that they’re not actually growing there! Mind blown 😵‍💫

Can I add wildly expensive advent calendars, please, @Dabberlocks? I’m not going to pay a couple of hundred quid for an advent calendar!

The wine ones are £80ish. They have made me love advent again!
It’s a beautiful festive box and a big glass of quality wine everyday. If I don’t fancy drinking that night I can save them - 4 nights worth is a weekend bottle. Or I save a few for stocking fillers ( some of bottles are really pretty).
Christmas Eve is either a half bottle of Champers or a whole bottle of Prosecco.

when pumpkins are just spread out on a field. not actually growing there.

Wtf?!? Why? Whats the point in that?!

We go to a nearby farm where they are grown. You used to actually pick your own but after an incident, they pre-cut the stalks!

ClaredeBear · 26/08/2025 20:41

Not at all, it’s interesting to hear other people’s views and I can imagine what a treat it is if you’ve got young children. Maybe I should give it a go as I rarely switch off…🤔

Browniesforbreakfast · 26/08/2025 20:43

I remember as a child having an advent calendar that was a picture of a snowy scene with glitter. Each day we would fight open a door to see a picture of a star, a tree or perhaps a present. I had fond memories. I found one of those advent calendars a few years ago and it was about three times the price of buying my kids a chocolate advent calendar each. I wasn’t convinced the glitter and pictures would be considered a fair exchange for the chocolate.

Opera
Workplace activities such as team building
Gym
Football
Rugby
Watxhing football in a pub whilst standing up
Boxing

Doesn't the gym serve an important purpose?

You could make one!!!! Or maybe I've been watching too much Angel Strawbridge.

I think some if it is so you can carve them there. No mess and seeds all over the table
It’s still tramping round a cold muddy field in the fresh air rather than at Tesco.

I've tried theatre several times but I just don't enjoy it. It seems too obviously 'pretend' to me, and a bit self-important, even with first rate actors. And yet I Iove films, so I don't really understand why.

Our local theatre is too small to make the big shows viable, so we tend to get travelling plays with very small casts. The actors are often multi-talented. I saw one very inventive play last year where the five actors played multiple parts, played their own instruments and even some of the props served multiple roles (for example, two clothes rails became a train).

You could say it was unrealistic, but it was also exhilarating. As well as suspending our disbelief, we had to use our own imaginations as much as we did when we were children. And by the magic of theatre, we were somehow transported to 1940s Bulgaria.

Any kind of event that involves portaloos. I don’t do portaloos and will gladly forgo drinking any fluids at all so that I have no need to use.

I read that as ‘Any kind of event that involves potatoes’ 🫣

My first boyfriend (and the love of my life) loved Christmas, and advent calendars (this was in the 70s).
He worked away a lot, and when it was the run up to Christmas he took an advent calendar with him! One of the kind you mentioned, with the little doors and the sparkles.
He wrote to me every day, and he always made a little drawing of what was behind that day's 'door' for me!
Such lovely memories.

Christmas

I forgot I hate Christmas! Pretty much all of it. I do pretend for my DC, but looking forward to being able to give it up once they are grown up.

Apparently there is Christmas stuff in Tesco already, along with back-to-school stuff and acres of Halloween tat. I bet they can't wait to get the Easter eggs out on display.

Ooh ‘any kind of event that involves potatoes’ would absolutely be on my justifiably hyped list!

I smugly grew my own one year. DS was not as impressed as I had hoped.

I can’t give it up! Grown up DC living away, I’m widowed and they love (insist) on having it here.
They say they do it for me, but it’s still a faff…

I went Sunflower Picking yesterday which was actually quite nice and I’ve got some lovely sunflowers now in the kitchen. In the next field they were actually growing pumpkins!! I thought wow actually a place growing them!

That sounds lovely! I'm beginning to wonder if kids will grow up not knowing that pumpkins actually grow out of the soil instead of being placed on them? A bit like not knowing that eating chicken is in any way related to a hen 🤔

Bumblebee72 · 31/08/2025 07:51

Bottomless Bunch. If it wasn't for the fact the food tends to be shite more people would complain it isn't in fact bottomless.

Bumblebee72 · 31/08/2025 07:56

I'm with those who say Christmas. Especially annoying those who (ironically) insist on going on about the "true" meaning of Christmas - no way am I throwing a birthday party for a fictional child.

Needanadultgapyear · 31/08/2025 08:17

Organised fun at work - I just feel awkward and out of place not part of the team in anyway. I even dislike work Christmas meals and after the last one where my bullies behaved in an appalling fashion I am so glad I am now self employed and never have to go to another one.
Massages, facials and pedicures - probably due to my phobia of being tickled.
Yoga to empty my brain my body has to work hard - reformer Pilates does this for me.
Beach holidays - doing absolutely nothing for me is not restful in any way.
