Hyped-up activities that are actually shite.

Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

There's no dogma in yoga; you don't have to believe in a specific higher power as you do in religions. The chants basically express respect for the teachings and the transformative potential of yoga and wish for peace and happiness for all beings. T.K.V. Desikachar, one of the 'original' Indian yogis whose teachings and students influenced the West, used to suggest that students dedicate their practice/give thanks to 'your highest principle', which could obviously mean anything to anyone.
I taught yoga for a while and used to suggest at the end that students say thank you to 'whoever or whatever you need to say thank you to'. (My teacher was in the Desikachar tradition and I was quite influenced by him). Spirituality can look like many things to different people and a good teacher will teach in a way that
models and encourages that idea.

A good yoga teacher won't encourage competitiveness or make students feel that anyone has to 'keep up' with anyone else. They should remind students that everyone works to their own level of 'honest effort' (as a teacher of mine used to term it), and give modifications and variations and perhaps props to enable everyone to have an experience of the poses regardless of physical limitations or specificities.
It is of course human and natural to look with envy at/feel self-conscious around the person sitting easily in lotus, or doing a handstand, or whatever, but part of the discipline of the practice is to work on accepting and welcoming your body and your level.

That sounds like a lot of dogma to me

LittleBitofBread · 11/09/2025 17:35

Maybe we're using/understanding the word differently.
It has a connotation of 'unquestionable truth', which in turns suggests there is 'a' truth (so in Christianity, that there is one God/Jesus is the son of God etc) and that, if you don't accept this, or if you believe in another god, or none, you're wrong.

What I'm trying to say is that in yoga you don't have to believe in anything.

I'd be genuinely interested to hear how you understand the concept of 'your highest principle' to be dogmatic, or the idea that everyone work to their own level of 'honest effort', or that everyone can work on accepting and welcoming their own body and the shapes it makes in yoga.

Tai Chai, yoga anything like that. Christmas markets. Once you've seen one you've seen them all, who needs to keeping buying more stuff anyway.

Another vote for NCT here. None of us really clicked, at least not to my knowledge. I found the whole lot of them very unfriendly. Even the mum who lives near me and our kids go to the same school! Someone tried to revive the WhatsApp group (after 5 years….) recently, suffice to say none of us responded after initial pleasantries.

But these things are subjective. Some people find yoga life changing, some don't. Some people adore spa days, acai bowls, or wearing Mickey Mouse ears and going on theme park rides. None of the above do anything for me, but that doesn't mean they're shite, it just means they're not my type of thing. Likewise I don't expect any kind of universal approval of tai chi, Aperol Spritz or Edith Wharton novels.

as an aside , went to visit Edith Wharton’s house in New England and it was amazing

Bottomless brunches. £40 for a tiny eggs Benedict and a glass of Lidl cava. Not actually bottomless because the food is limited, the time is limited and the drink is limited because they rarely actually top up your glass.

Bottomless Brunch is the worst. Crap food, crap drink often not even at brunch time.

I’d prefer bottomless brunch food and one drink.

There's a really good one in our town. You get plenty of food and you get someone filling your drinks up regularly. There is a wide range of drinks too.

Same! When I first heard of bottomless brunches I assumed the food was unlimited. I barely drink alcohol and love to eat!

Some are. I once went on an all you can eat pancake brunch on a boat in Amsterdam 😂

Recently we went for non-bottomless brunch and there was a hen party nearby (at 11am!). They had clearly interpreted the bottomless as being related to the dress code. After they had a couple of drinks their dresses were pretty indecent. Never one to shame anyone but it is a little off putting when your eating avocado toast with the kids.

That's a shame. Our NCT group is still going strong and our children are 12!

Haha I love yoga but you have to need to do it. I got into it at uni as I was always very tense, too much desk sitting, neck and back stiffness. So did it for that. Then got into the principle - you turn up whatever your mood and you just work with however your body is, not competitive. This was in stark contrast to other areas of my life where I felt I was competing. Taught me principles of self acceptance and self compassion rather than comparing myself to others.

Then there's different kinds of yoga - hatha is my fave as it doesn't involve bloody downward dog. It's more about opening hips.

Also restorative is nice as you get into a stretch then hold it for two mins.

Then there's bikram hot yoga which is another level - gives you a serotonin boost.

I like finding a nice place to do it, big airy lots of light and windows. Need a teacher you like.

Having an eyelash lift - oh my god I laid in a chair for ages and about a week later my eyelashes broke in half 😄 Never again.

You took your kids to a bottomless brunch?

No we went for non-bottomless brunch - you know like standard brunch.

Thought I'd try yoga this week for my body and mind. Knackered my back and so now cant do much else!

I'm glad I've discovered its not unlimited food at a bottomless brunch.

I defend center parcs, except the pricing. My family love it.

Makehaysunshine · 13/09/2025 13:10

I really think a good teacher is essential when doing yoga.

Massage are actual torture. The ones I have had had been so painful that I thought the masseuse was actually enjoying using torture devices on me. Absolutely the opposite of relaxing 😣 and very painful for some time afterwards!

There are so many different types of massage... And the personality and personal style of each masseuse is so very important.

The same is actually true for yoga as well. Its a matter of finding the right person and place as we are all different and need different things at different stage of life.

I do remember a Thai "massage" at a hotel in Bangkok that had me fearing for the integrity of my spinal cord!

Camping. Cycling holidays. Hot tubs (aka pubic soup). Team building anything. Anything in a circle that involves clapping.
