Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

Afternoon tea. A couple of sandwiches, tiny cakes, drop of Prosecco and they have the audacity to relieve you of £25.

There is a place near me that does fabulous afternoon tea for those who like that sort of thing. Personally, I go there and spend a lot less money on two humongous slices of their excellent cake. 🍰 I don't see why I should waste good money and stomach space on boring sandwiches.

Messycoo · 31/08/2025 08:29

@DarkestBerty hahahahah thanks for that I was being to lose the will, with some of the shite drivel ppl post on MN !
I have thought a thousand times to join a BC.
I have no need now as you have confirmed
my suspicions!!

Staycations. Pay a shit ton of money to stay in aa ill equipped UK holiday home, and have it rain all day every day. Give me a sun drenched beach abroad for halr the price please.

It's a shame as I love the UK, but bloody hell, the price of staying in the UK has me running for the airport everytime. Recently, against my better judgement went to Wales instead of abroad. Stayed in a beautiful pub with rooms for 2 nights (£360), dinner and food cost about £250 in total without including drinks and that was before we did anything else. Could have gone abroad for a wek all inclusive for that.

Going out for an Italian meal. It is just starch with some tomato sauce and very little meat or veg. It has become the default cusine because it is inoffensive to people with sensitive palates who don't like anything too spicy or 'foreign' but it is just so bloody boring and overpriced.

I think you are going to the wrong restaurants.

The one I go to has a page of starters, a page of pasta, a page of meat and one of fish.

I like dance fitness classes it’s like nightclubbing but home by 930pm. I do a few pilates because the group have annual party I like dinner & disco.
Thought I’d try the yoga at my gym never again. Arrived early to get my space at the back near the door. Sat on mat and soon class filled up all to my horror facing me. The instructor walked in put his mat near mine. He asked me to go directly in front of him as I was new. I told him I’d stay where I was as not very flexible felt that would be even more cringe than being front right. Hated it, the instructor speaking the moves more than demonstrating and nobody had a laugh in there like you do at the other classes.

I am always suspicious of restaurants with three pages of main courses. How do you maintain stock of fresh produce for that many options without high levels of waste?

ohime · 31/08/2025 09:36

Yep, another vote for meditation. Any kind. Does nothing and feels like a wanky waste of time. Of course I do recognise that for many people it can truly be a sanity-saver, and I believe they're sincere and am very glad it works for them, but for me it's never delivered on any of the promises. Could it be that only some subset of us has the gene??

I cant do yoga or any class where you have to pay conscious attention to your breathing . The minute I begin thinking about it I start holding my breath or hyperventilating. Massage, any massage, including head massage gives me the most horrible feeling, I hate being stroked or patted and tense up until its over. I was once given a voucher for a massage, thought I would give it a try (not realising how much I hate massage) and it was like a war of attrition: the more she felt me tense, the more she tried to massage the tension out of my shoulders and neck, I dont know which of us was more tooth-grindingly wound up by the end of the session.

So, that brings us to the worst scenario - NCT birth preparation classes where you are coached in breathing techniques, and your partner encouraged to support you with physical contact and massage...

I hated nct and mother and baby classes with a vengeance there’s always know it alls who do their damdest to make others feel inadequate and all you want to do is have a good cry (or was that just me ?)

Brokeandold · 31/08/2025 10:20

I hated my one and only NCT group-I had very high hopes for it, first baby, was BF and needed to talk about all the issues in a friendly group or so i thought!
Arrived at the house, it was massive with all new cars parked up, I was driving a beat up ole banger. Inside was so “perfect” , wheres all the babies I thought? All the group talked about was the new conservatory the host had built. I had to go into another room to breast feed as her husband turned up to make his lunch, cant remember if that was my choice to move or she asked me?
I left soon after, thinking that was a complete waste of precious energy.

When I read 'with a man who brings a guitar.' I actually said out loud to myself - oh jasus no'

I hate it! I hate when someone who is no good at guitar or singing or whatever pulls it out and I have to pretend to be interested. I can pretend for a few minutes then leave

Oh goodness, yes. The guy with the guitar moment.

Apparently there is Christmas stuff in Tesco already, along with back-to-school stuff and acres of Halloween tat. I bet they can't wait to get the Easter eggs out on display.

I work in a supermarket. We've already got Christmas stuff in too. Easter eggs come with the Boxing Day delivery and we have to hide them out the back in the warehouse for weeks before we can decently put them on the shelves.

I don't mind meditation but don't see it as a group exercise with someone guiding my thoughts.

ToadRage · 31/08/2025 12:24

I tried to join a book club once but I can't read fast enough. It was pointless.
My Mum raved about yoga, i went with her twice and hated it.
A friend of mine loved a singer at jazz club, I was bored rigid, i prefer something I can be involved with and not just watch.
Planning to join a choir in September, used to love choir in my teens, tried a few during uni and didn't enjoy them and am trying again.
I did a couple of shows with an Am Dram group, i enjoyed it for a bit but I'm not a great dancer so they kicked me out.

themagicnumberthree · 31/08/2025 13:32

Cold water swimming. People wang on about it being invigorating but the only positive feeling i experienced was relief at no longer being in the freezing North Sea
Cup cakes - only the topping is nice, then you're left with dry sponge cake
Meditation. Never worked for me, I alternate between worrying and wondering how long I've got till I can stop

pontivex · 31/08/2025 13:46

Any bar or restaurant that has ‘live music’. I will happily walk out of a booked restaurant if they have live music on. It’s too loud so can’t have a nice chat over dinner and usually shite so everyone is sitting in silence or shouting over some chanteuse doing slow breathy versions of 1990s grunge.
Places round us advertise it like it’s a massive draw but I know no one who enjoys it.

Speckly · 31/08/2025 13:56

Adventure golf 🤦🏻‍♀️

I always find live music too loud as well. I don't know how people can hear themselves think, let alone talk. I like seeing a show at a proper venue but I still wear ear defenders.

Christmas Light Trails are good if you go big. Like, Kew Gardens or bust. We went to one at [venue withheld out of kindness] last year that genuinely looked as if they'd forgotten they were hosting it until the day before, and then had to hightail it to B&Q to get what lights were left. And there weren't many lights left.

Yep, Blenheim Palace is awesome

Live horse racing. You have to stand around for hours doing nothing, then the horses fly past and then you stand around again....I don't even drink!

Also Christmas light trails. Sounds fun in Sep when you book it but who wants to get everyone out when it comes to it on a cold, often wet, Dec evening. You spend a fortune on snacks and fair rides just to shut your bewildered kids up.

I’m late to the thread, it’s probably already been said, live horse racing is only there for the day drinking in a nice frock.

TheGander · 31/08/2025 17:17

And to support the betting industry.

My experience is it's the prequel to an outdoor concert. I saw Texas at Sandown earlier this month. We timed it so most of the races were finished by the time we got there. Saw a few women who had misjudged the dress code - it got pretty cold and they were freezing.

Adventure golf 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've never even heard of that!!! My mind is boggling 😜

I'm very much of the "golf is a good walk spoiled" camp... adventure golf sounds like a good walk traumatised 😨

Plastictreees · 31/08/2025 19:56

Cannot believe that no one else has said karaoke.

But karaoke is great if you've had 18 pints! I don't think anyone goes otherwise 🤡

Me and my family did a bit of hiking today enjoying nature, the calm and the quiet… until a very large group of walkers came through. They were very noisy and were walking on the same path, taking so much space. It was unpleasant, like being in any crowd in the city centre. Not sure if you are actually part of the group it’s less noisy or overwhelming. Probably suits some but can imagine many wishing they were enjoying nature with just a friend or two instead and able to hear the birds, and not scare the ponies away, etc.
