Are you suggesting that the people coming across in boats should be employed to look after our old people? Don't think it's quite as simple as that. First they have to want to do that as a job and second they need to be vetted. I don't think anyone should be working with vulnerable people if they've not been vetted properly.

They are already looking after our old people it's been going on for years wakey wakey. Go out and have a look for yourself. Have you never worked?

Falseknock · 24/08/2025 16:31

More talk at least they are doing and working. Look for yourself in old people's homes, Tesco, warehouse, digging the roads, cleaning houses, the dustman and the shit shovelers jobs that we don't want they are taking them. All of sudden you sound precious and want the jobs 🤣

What are you on about? They’re legally not allowed to work until their asylum claim is assessed and given leave to remain.

So some will be doing cash jobs or being exploited but they’re not working in Tesco or for the council.

LBFseBrom · 24/08/2025 16:34

I see no point in comparing homeless people and asylum seekers (who may or may not be homeless). Every one is an individual, people are homeless for many different reasons. There should be no them and us, all are vulnerable members of the human race and worthy of basic respect and care. Any one of us could need a helping hand at some point in our lives.

Asylum seekers don't stay homeless, if they are granted asylum they'll find somewhere to live and go to work. If not they'll be deported.

It makes me very sad that we have our own homeless people and yet we are providing these people with a comfortable bed and food

They're in hotels because of the backlog left by the Tories. Labour are making a more realistic effort but not saying they're perfect either.
If you don't like the amount of homeless people in the UK, it isn't the fault of the migrants. We've had very high homeless figures for many years, even when the migrants figures were a lot lower.
One of the fundamental things we have in our own laws is that we say migrants have to be here to claim asylum. That could be changed but no one has so far.
It isn't a great situation, but the people risking life and limb to come here on small boats are a very small percentage of the total of migrants. Panorama did a very informative programme last year, presented by Ros Atkins.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to work whilst they are waiting for their asylum claim to be processed, which is why if they do work it will be illegal and cash in hand. I thought this was common knowledge.

They do work and pay taxes and have ambition. Are you not embarrassed?

The majority of people who sign on can work.

No they don’t. They’re not allowed to work until they’re granted asylum. Hence them being housed in hotels while their applications are going through. Unless of course you know people who work under the radar, ie cash in hand, black market, in which case you need to report them….

How many deportations have there been, how many people have just disappeared.

What about you're young people who you are protecting and showing a lack of ambition. Where is the teaching and respect. There is no passion to succeed and help. The point is they don't go straight onto benefits they go straight to work to look after your old people we need the taxes. Help your young people and teach them how to have pride and ambition. Teaching them and glorifying burning down hotels is not a very good way of bringing up our young people. Furthermore, they should use all that energy they have in a job. Are you not embarrassed that we are looking more and more stupid and losing the plot. It should not be your life ambition to burn down hotels and claim benefits.

More reason then for a pause on immigration, while Labour sort out building homes and improving the NHS. That would be a more common sense approach than saying ‘hey, all welcome. Come on in. We have no homes for you and the NHS is on its knees, but we’ll sort that little problem out later…’

OonaStubbs · 24/08/2025 16:40

We are a small country - and yet we are the 21st most populated country in the world. It simply cannot go on like this.

When they do they go to work unlike your young people who you are encouraging not to work. Anyway IAM going to look for my 3rd job tomorrow I need the money and my daughter is looking for her second job so she can save up and go to an Oasis concert.

Itsnoteasybeingcheesey · 24/08/2025 16:42

The single men in the hotels are mostly economic migrants pretending to be asylum seekers.
Anyone who doesn’t realise that is frustrating naive. I loath people who think this way but haven’t had their own neighbourhoods negatively impacted by economic migration.

Who’s teaching the young to burn down hotels and claim benefits? Not anyone I know. They’re very much a minority, who people seem to want to lump in with those with genuine concerns about immigration. I have big concerns about immigration, but I can say hand on heart I don’t have the urge to burn down a hotel. Oh, and I don’t claim benefits either…

They don't say All Welcome. At least they aren't sending people to Rwanda at massive expense and inhumane conditions.
Labour and the Tories over the past couple of decades haven't built enough housing. Trouble is, when they have a push they allow already wealthy house builders to build housing that we don't need. We're only actually short of affordable housing, not large expensive detached houses. But affordable housing doesn't give the house building firms the profits they want.
Too little bossiness and too much carte blanche

SleepWalkingtoSeville · 24/08/2025 16:47

Haven’t RTFT because the first couple of pages was enough to make me feel miserable tbh. I work with women and children. I can assure you there are hotels full of women and families claiming asylum. The trauma these families have endured is appalling.

Falseknock · 24/08/2025 16:48

This beautiful country has turned into a shit hole because of their attitude. The people in this country would rather burn down hotels and claim benefits. We were the envy of the world and now our young citizens are being taught not to start families and work. They would rather live like tramps. My grandparents who fought in 2 world wars would be rolling in his grave. We are teaching our young people to be expert arsonists to burn down hotels with children in it, to not work and to use tax payers money to go to 9 Oasis concerts.

ShesLump · 24/08/2025 16:48

So @Goldengirl123, as you’re so worried about homeless people in Britain, please outline what you do to support their struggles?

Do you volunteer? Or just donate? Do you have a related petition going you’d like us to sign?

Or do you only give a fuck about people living on the streets when there’s a chance to be racist?

TheWalkingEyebag · 24/08/2025 16:48

I moved away from the UK several years ago and was chatting with DH about moving back. Until all the protests around the hotels erupted. I’m sickened by many peoples’ attitudes towards those fleeing unimaginable horrors and hoping for a better life. Do people really think they want to leave their homes? Their established networks of family and friends? This is a last resort. The protests are gross and people who are bothered by the situation need to redirect their anger from those seeking asylum to the government who let the system end up like this. I, for one, can say I would be first in the queue for an escape from some of the situations these people have come from, and the human thing for us to do is give them some comfort so they can get back on their feet.

And so what if most of the current hotel inhabitants are young men? People need to stop parroting the far right crap about them hiding from fighting etc. Would you not want your partner/son to head to a new country first to ensure passage is safe for your children and that you can actually secure a visa/employment/accommodation?

Finally, this situation is so completely different to the homelessness situation. It’s a different department, different budget, different priorities (governmental and personal), different barriers. People without housing have been unquestionably failed by the system and absolutely need help from the government and our society. You can be angry about that without putting blame on asylum seekers and hotels.

How much housing is "enough"? What happens when it is full up and we are back in the same situation a few years later?
