I moved away from the UK several years ago and was chatting with DH about moving back. Until all the protests around the hotels erupted. I’m sickened by many peoples’ attitudes towards those fleeing unimaginable horrors and hoping for a better life. Do people really think they want to leave their homes? Their established networks of family and friends? This is a last resort. The protests are gross and people who are bothered by the situation need to redirect their anger from those seeking asylum to the government who let the system end up like this. I, for one, can say I would be first in the queue for an escape from some of the situations these people have come from, and the human thing for us to do is give them some comfort so they can get back on their feet.
And so what if most of the current hotel inhabitants are young men? People need to stop parroting the far right crap about them hiding from fighting etc. Would you not want your partner/son to head to a new country first to ensure passage is safe for your children and that you can actually secure a visa/employment/accommodation?
Finally, this situation is so completely different to the homelessness situation. It’s a different department, different budget, different priorities (governmental and personal), different barriers. People without housing have been unquestionably failed by the system and absolutely need help from the government and our society. You can be angry about that without putting blame on asylum seekers and hotels.
