"Is it on the trolley? Can you point at it?"

I still enjoy recordings of shows like Round the Horne and Flanders and Swann, so my reference include things like "I'm a Gnu", the Hippopotamus song, and "Oh halLO Mr 'orne, I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy".

I bloody love Round the Horne. I quote it so often it’s become part of my idiolect.

”Many times…many many times…”

”It’s yer actual French.”

”Ooh, he’s bold!”

Womanofcustard · 23/08/2025 05:58

“They don’t like it up ‘em”
“Interesting…..but stupid”
”Look that up in your Funk and Wagnell!”
”Don’t mention the war”

As a child I hated the character Benny on Crossroads no idea why.

Can't say I hated him, he was just there. Hated Sarah-Jane's slimy husband.

Also hated the slimy man in Howard's Way, the one that Jan worked for and went off with.

@FrangipaniBlue on my first driving lesson I was getting a bit excitable and the instructor said “who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?”

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm impressed that a pre-internet kid was able to find out how to call the Congo. I'd imagine your parents were less impressed!

I'm reminded of when I was 16 and an office junior in a big shipping office - at lunchtime I had to cover when the telephonist went for lunch. It was one of those dolls-eye thingies with cords that you had to plug here and there.

We had to make calls to ports overseas, including New York, which I found very exciting. I used to amuse myself by dialling random NYC numbers and have a chat with whoever answered the phone! 😀

SadTimesInFife · 23/08/2025 07:22

Colleague (Irish, 30s) didnt know who Michael Palin is, nor did he know what Monty Python was.
It aged me.

Talking of CW has reminded me of the 999 series. Used to love that. The reconstructions were wild. I remember there was some segment where a stunt man used to demonstrate dangers like how not to put out chip pan fires etc

Edited

My dopey cousin and his mates were portrayed in a 999 reconstruction once - they’d gone for a walk on a beach in Somerset and got cut off by the tide. The coastguard had to rescue them from the cliffs 🙄

Even though I was born in the 1970s, my cultural reference points go right back to the 1930s.

Yes, my mum grew up in the '40s seeing all the Hollywood greats of the time at the cinema. When they came on television, we watched them together. I almost know Casablanca by heart!

Play it again Sam

who’s looking at you kid (not sure where that was from or if it’s even right)

come on down, the price is right doo doo doo doo

and the 321 fingers

Peculiar23 · 23/08/2025 07:57

I used to spend ages trying to do the 321 fingers
Also Rubik’s cube - a lad in my school was on the news for being able to do it so quickly, we all took our cubes into school for him to solve !

shellyleppard · 23/08/2025 08:00

@Peculiar23 the only way I could do the rubiks cube was to change all the stickers!!! 😂😂

BlueEyedBogWitch · 23/08/2025 08:02

You’re terrible, Muriel!

See, I think of that one as hip pop culture reference…but no. No, it’s not.

The first "pop concert" I went to was the Wombles when I was about 6.
Remember-member-member what a Womble-omble-omble you are!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 23/08/2025 05:32

Of course! Thank you, i really ought to have known that one

No Luton Airport.

There's certain words/phrases that whenever I see them written down I hear them in my mind in a particular accent - this is definitely one of those!

And it was so obvious because they'd go back on wonky, but no I really completed it honest! BlushGrin

Javelin through the neck is my enduring memory of that show 🤢.

Also a pp mentioned people winning speedboats on Bullseye but IIRC those winners always lived in places like landlocked Wolverhampton!
