But how were they in hospital long enough for about four series??? Or are we to imagine it all took place in the space of a few days?

I can really remember it ,but people were kept in hospital much longer in those days, for run of the mill things

It was a sitcom, meant for entertainment. I suspended my disbelief ☺️

The Esso sign means happy motoring.
Call at the Esso sign.

I was much older much much older before I realised that Esso was the trading name of Standard Oil.
I am a bit slow . . .

I used to know someone who had a large cat called BP for Big Puss. Then he got a kitten so called her SO for Small One.

It also took me ages to realise that Baco Foil wasn't named because it was foil used in baking but because it was made by the British Aluminium Company 🤦🏻‍♀️

SinnerBoy · 29/08/2025 22:21

Alcan was Aluminium of Canada. We used to have the plant just up the road in Northumberland.

The other day, my mid-teen granddaughter told her b/f, (same age) that he would "lose his street cred" (which is a phrase I use to her sometimes), and he looked at her blankly and then said, "What's that?". She couldn't believe he didn't know that saying, so she asked a few of her school friends and they hadn't heard of it either. That made me feel old! Lol!

Apparently saying cringe things like losing street cred “loses you aura” these days 🤣

If my husband is faffing about I say “just throw it to the ducks Derek”
children give me blank looks ! His name is not Derek :)

All those girdles with suspenders - such an odd thing to become de rigeur.
I never did wear one but wore pants type over my tights to keep them up - can’t remember what they were called.
wore suspenders belt once or twice but as I had skinny hips and long legs they were most uncomfortable. Def not sexy!

It wasn't until around the 1960s that it became routine to wear tights instead of stockings. There were tights around before then, but they were generally really thick material and quite expensive. I remember having to struggle with suspenders in my early teens, and I loved it when stocking-type tights started appearing in the shops.

My mother, who always resisted anything she regarded as newfangled as long as possible, wore girdles with suspenders for ages, even when it became difficult to find stockings to wear with them. She would even wear them under trousers, which was, shall we say, an interesting look.

HonoriaBulstrode · 05/09/2025 09:36

it was when mini skirts came in. So about 1965/66.

Before that, at primary school, we had grey school tights.

Tights were expensive at first, so it took a while for them to become widely worn, especially for schoolgirls who couldn't afford to keep buying.

Took a while for ladder resistant types to come in, and short skirts and old wooden school chairs were not a good combination. We used to mend them when we could, especially when we did get run-resistant and it was a hole rather than a ladder.

Stockings and suspenders are healthier than tights. And they had the advantage that if you always bought the same shade, if you laddered one, you didn't have to throw away both.

Took me years to realise that it wasn't "when your carpet is trashed you run the tube" (goodness knows what I thought that meant) but "when your carpet smells fresh your room does too" 🤦🏻‍♀️

Same!

I always thought they were in their 70s. They were probably younger than I am now!
