Some people just don't get any cultural references outside their own bubble, regardless of age. My dh has a colleague mid 30s who never heard of the Beatles. Her defence was 'oh it was before my time'. As if Dh was a teen in the 60s ffs, he is only 10 years older. I worked with someone who was about 3 years younger than me when we were in our 20s and she didn't get any cultural references, absolutely none. We were raised at the same time in the same country and might as well have been another planet.

Don't blow a fuse. Eat one.

Live & Kicking on a Saturday morning and the phone number song, 0181 811 8181.

I’m old enough to remember when it was 01 811 8181 on Saturday Superstore (and crimewatch)

Just been in Barcelona for my 6th wedding anniversary and I’ve no idea where it came from but I randomly started singing the music to the advert, late 80s/early 90s?

”Ice-creama, piazza, Italia” “Take-a Gino home with you”

Was that Gino Ginelli or am I confused.com

Figcherry · 22/08/2025 19:03

Dd has never forgiven me, as she walked down the path for the bus on the first day of A level exams, I stood and waved and sang very loudly
Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye a la Vera Lynn.

Pigsinpants · 22/08/2025 19:03

Did you like that? In the voice of Fred Dibnah

When anyone says 'before my time' to me, I ask if they've heard of the Romans, WWII, the dinosaurs etc. I know about books, music and films that were around before I was born - amazing! Some people must live under a rock.

“Reginald Molehusband , the safest parker in town”.

From one of those wonderful Public Information films - sadly I still cannot parallel park .

Remember Joe and Petunia from the seaside safety public information film ? Petunia being a large blonde lady in swimsuit and sunglasses and Joe being a wimpy type with a knotted hanky on his head ? Petunia was voiced by Wendy Craig but l can’t remember who voiced Joe.

easylikeasundaymorn · 22/08/2025 19:06

but there are so many cultural references now that nobody can know them all! Plus some are culture/area specific, so someone the exact same age as you who grew up in a different country wouldn't necessarily know them either.
So it's not necessarily an age thing if someone doesn't recognise an exact quote.

It annoys me on quiz shows where someone says "That was before my time," to explain why they don't know something.
Well yeah, the sinking of the Titanic was before my time mate, I've still heard of it!

4dayoldribs · 22/08/2025 19:07

can anyone help me with this one?

”i’ll get it grandad”
sure it was a public information film about road safety but can’t find it anywhere on you tube.

i say it every time someone forgets something. my kids think i’m bonkers but then i have a song for every occasion too and yet to be beaten!

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 22/08/2025 19:08

They probably wouldn't get the lyrics to the Flintstones - let's have a gay old time !

My all time favourite film, and would bd my Mastermind specialist subject. I
quote this to the teens often:

“Food, food, food, I’m having a crisis and all you can think about is food!”

Isn't this followed by the lines "You're unnatural, pal - you're a FREAK" as he takes a big bite?

And the headmaster whiling away the afternoon playing the piano in the school hall and saying "run away now you small boys" when some pupils stop to listen

That film truly is from another age - it seems so innocent now

Rosscameasdoody · 22/08/2025 19:10

Smoke me a kipper, l’ll be back for breakfast !!

brothers chuckle GIF

On the flip side, my sister and I were discussing the chuckle brothers the other day, as you do, and my 7 year old piped up “oh, are you talking about Paul and Barry?”
We looked at each other astounded! She explained that her teacher had shown them some clips of Chuckle vision at school. No idea which lesson that came up in. Most surprising since her teacher is only in her early twenties!

It certainly was. A bellissima soft focus ad featuring attractive young men and women flitting around a non-specific Italian city, spoon flirting over ice cream….that disappointingly ended with letting us know it was made by Wall’s in the UK!!

Speeding down to Trumpton with a cargo of cocaine?

You might be speeding down to Trumpton but I can put a tennis racket up against my face and pretend that I am Kendo Nagasaki
