Replying “42” as the answer to any question will also baffle the young folk.

As with many other HHGTTG quotes.

Oooh! Mr Horne, how dolly to vadar your eke.
(Not sure about spelling)

All I can say to you, MrsJoyful, is chizz (a cultural reference that a colleague once threw into conversation, to my great joy).

What's this quote from? A friend always says it, but I never got the reference.

"That's you, that is" is from The Mary Whitehouse Experience.

Baddiel & Newman.

I copied this from another site, about ten years ago:

--
Remember being brought up in the UK in the 50s/60s when:
Pasta had not been invented.
Curry was a surname.
A takeaway was a mathematical problem.
A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower.
Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.
All crisps were plain; the only choice was either to add the salt or not.
A Chinese chippy was a foreign carpenter.
Rice was a milk pudding and never ever part of our dinner.
A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining.
Brown bread was something only poor people ate.
Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.
Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves, and never green.
Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.
Only Heinz made beans.
Fish didn't have fingers.
Eating raw fish was called poverty, not sushi.
None of us had ever heard of yoghurt.
Healthy food consisted of anything edible.
People who didn't peel potatoes were regarded as lazy.
Indian restaurants were only found in India.
Cooking outside was called camping.
Seaweed was not a recognised food.
Kebab was not even a word, never mind a food.
Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days.
Prunes were medicinal.
Surprising, meusli was readily available; it was called cattle feed.
Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of one.
Water came out of a tap; if someone had suggesgted bottling it and charging more than petrol for it, they would have become a laughing stock.
---

Some of those might have been slightly exaggerated.

One from Gregory's Girl: "Arrivederci Gordon, hurry back"
I say it to the cat every time he goes out

My all time favourite film, and would bd my Mastermind specialist subject. I
quote this to the teens often:

“Food, food, food, I’m having a crisis and all you can think about is food!”

Suit you, sir.

Do you want it Sir?

Imveryold · 22/08/2025 17:59

Ah. I never liked it, it made me cringe.

We used to watch it with our dad while our mum was out working evenings. He's 84 now, he loved it. My mum wouldn't have approved, but she wasn't there. 😁

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/08/2025 18:18

It's that fine rain that soaks you through.

Also any mention of Heartbeat on a Sunday night equals tumbleweed.

Themagicclaw · 22/08/2025 18:19

PIVOT!
He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy
Poh-tay-toes (from lord of the rings)
To me - to you - to me -to you

All have drawn blank stares from my 20yr old students. I'm 37.

I was listening to a radio programme the other day and they had to explain what Rickrolling was.

So what is it? Explain to an oldie, please…

DD is quite partial to potato waffles. I always treat her to a rendition of, "Birds Eye Potato Waffles, they're waffly versatile (cuckoo)". She rolls her eyes a lot.

Also, "Good morning Vietnam!"

Grill 'em, bake 'em, fry 'em, eat 'em, waffly versatile! Grin

"Me? The 13th Duke of Wybourne? With my reputation? In a girls school? Oh God!"
"Milky! Milky!"

MassiveOvaryaction · 22/08/2025 18:23

Went on a training course with 2 (much younger) colleagues to a place where every corridor looked identical.

"Blimey, it's like The Shining!" I quipped.
Blank looks.
"Heeeere's Johnny? Mad man with axe?"
Blank looks turned to genuine concern for my wellbeing 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/08/2025 18:25

@hoteltango, my DM cooked spaghetti and made curry in the early 60s. Curry IIRC even in the 50s. My DF had got a taste for it in India during WW2.

I do remember spaghetti being available only in very long blue packs, though. Much longer than any you see in the shops today.

(sorry if already mentioned, it’s the first thing that came to mind when I read the OP but haven’t RTFT)

gillefc82 · 22/08/2025 18:30

Just been in Barcelona for my 6th wedding anniversary and I’ve no idea where it came from but I randomly started singing the music to the advert, late 80s/early 90s?

”Ice-creama, piazza, Italia” “Take-a Gino home with you”
