What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

People who whistle! 🤬

Can't bear whistling and there seems to be a certain breed of person - usually male - who think everyone in the whole supermarket wants to listen to their endless, tuneless noise.😡😡😡

Those who queue at the cashier point near to me and do it will most definitely get my best death stare. 👹

Yes it is guaranteed to drive me insane!

People who pack very slowly at the check outs, while you stand there waiting for them to finish before the cashier can start scanning your items.

Yes… they pack very slowly…everything put in the bag in order…then proceed to look in the handbag to find a purse, open the purse, sort out which card to use, pick the wrong g card, find another card, slowlyinput the PIN number, put card back in purse, close purse, put purse back in handbag, fasten hand bag, put handbag back over shoulder, have another look into bag of shopping…then eventually piss off!
Gggrrrrrrhhhh!

Small children running around and worse are those who play chase and hide and seek !

Parents who take a snack from the shelf and let their child eat it to keep them quiet while sitting in the trolley. By the time they get to the checkout the snack is finished. I wonder if it gets paid for.

It’s the shit covered shoes in my food trolley that makes me vomit!

@purpledaze24 If you take your 4 year old to grocery Shop he should know not to run around. If he doesn't, then please don't take him. I'm not afraid for myself but for frail older people. I accidentally hurt a kid with my trolley the other week because she started to run just when I passed a corner. Her mum was great though ; told her crying daughter that this is what happens when you run in shops while comforting her.

itbemay1 · 16/08/2025 14:10

Staff running about with the massive trollers picking for Deliveroo or whatever. People chatting in the aisle blocking it. Kids running about.

Coffeeishot · 16/08/2025 14:31

pinenuts75 · 16/08/2025 13:53

Just go round the other way they’re doing their job, who’s going to stack the shelves and pick orders? The elves?

What other way ? Of course they are doing their jobs but when they all meet up for a chat they are blocking the aisle.

Hiptothisjive · 16/08/2025 14:41

People who eat or open food they haven’t paid for yet.

ADHDQueen · 16/08/2025 15:12

Steal stuff. Retail worker here, if it wasn't obvious.

They could be talking about work related stuff

pinenuts75 · 16/08/2025 15:21

Annoy the staff, yes I work in retail.

landano · 16/08/2025 15:33

People who insist on entering card/pin when they can just tap - I don’t mean when the tap doesn’t work (periodic pin entry) or over the limit to tap - I mean those who will not tap. My aunt.

PuppyMonkey · 16/08/2025 15:34

Was just about to post about loud whistling men. And no matter how much you try to get away from them, you end up crossing their paths again and again.

DairyLeanne · 16/08/2025 15:36

When a whole family stop down the aisle and block the aisle, or when someone is reading the product info on the bottle etc and you just want to grab something that is immediately Infront of them.

Anxioustealady · 16/08/2025 15:43

When people barrel around corners with heavy trolleys like they're in a massive rush. It's very self important and they could easily knock into someone and hurt them. I also don't really believe their shopping is that urgent.

Also people who walk slowly but block you getting past.

Surely it's personal choice though - getting annoyed by others making different choices, which are by no means unreasonable, seems pointless imho.

They are supposed to be flat to stop them toppling over onto the floor if upright 🍾

You misunderstand. I'm talking about the people who lay the bottles down sideways across the conveyor, so they roll back and forth every time it moves. They always put them there first as well, so as they roll, they whizz forwards and squash the delicate thing you put down last. Just lay them lengthways so they don't roll about.

RJ2023 · 16/08/2025 15:59

People who just dump their car on the perimeter road of the car park, right outside the supermarket doors, because they deem themselves too important to use one of the ample spaces within the car park (Sainsbury's, Hadleigh Road, Ipswich!!!)

Boomer55 · 16/08/2025 16:11

People blocking aisles talking, and small children running around.

People who don't wait for a nano second as you're picking something out from a shelf or a freezer unit. I call out the rudeness every time. Mainly happens in Waitrose.

Or the opposite, the rude people like the couple in Sainsbury’s yesterday, who blocked the entire fish section while they did a bloody scientific study of every single piece of fish on display. I stood behind, patiently waiting to duck in and quickly grab a pack of smoked salmon. The husband had seen me, and after a couple of minutes gave his wife a nod to indicate I was waiting. She looked behind at me, scowled and continued her detailed perusal. Unbelievable.

People who leave their trolley at the checkout then go back for more shopping ... I don't mean if they've just forgotten toothpaste ...... but people who carry on shopping and dropping into the trolley and going back for more.

I think it's a french thing ....

Yes, the French seem to establish trolley base camp at the check out then fan out like seperate task forces to different parts of the store.
Another thing they do is use their own bags to put their shopping in before they've paid, rummage it all back out at the till, then repack.

A lot of them don't even look like conventional one compartment tote like things. I've even seen rucksacks being used. The cashiers don't seem to mind but I can't think you'd be allowed to do this in the UK. It always takes me by surprise no matter how many times I see it. I wouldn't dare and anyway, I know that I would be the only person in the town's history who would be pulled up on suspicion of shoplifting if I did.

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/08/2025 16:17

@JadeSeahorse whistling makes me almost want to cry it really affects me and it’s ALWAYS men, and always sporadic tuneless bursts 😡😡😡 the other day there was a whistler in Aldi who then proceeded to start bouncing one of the big beach balls on the shop floor. I felt sorry for his wife

suburburban · 16/08/2025 16:19

Kids on scooters in aisles

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/08/2025 16:19

I have filled an empty shopping bag rather than use a basket in a UK supermarket.... but felt very self conscious .... I expect I was being watched.

ohyesido · 16/08/2025 16:20

People who try to block others’ view of the reduced items and painstakingly examine everything.
