What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

People that walk from one side of the aisle to the over.... pick a bloody side!!! 😂 Or the ones who just stand in front of the display so no-one can get past) reach the stuff they need. Or the ones who walk three abreast along the aisle....grrrr

But there are different things on each side of the aisle?! 🤔

Men and women, usually women it has to be said, who are staring at a shelf where there are products of more than one variety and speaking to someone on the phone loudly in a whining voice,

‘They haven’t got cheese and onion, they’ve got cheese and tomato or just cheese on it’s own…..’

Then they proceed to block that area by swivelling their head and eyes all over the shelf as if the cheese and onion is going to magically appear!

I find it quite shocking that they can’t make their own decisions about which product to buy and actually have to phone someone.

It’s never over anything important such as a specific component, it’s always over something like what flavour yoghurt or snacks and they spend ages wondering what to do when faced with a product not being available!

I was behind one such pathetic woman once who was having a near breakdown because they didn’t have the fabric conditioner she usually buys so she was opening all the others and giving a running commentary to the person on the other end of the phone a description of the fragrance!

We have become a nation of indecisive people who can’t think for themselves and it’s so irritating when they clog up the aisles.

Yes isn’t it ridiculous

I find the inane calls distracting when I’m trying to shop

Performance parents who let their kids "pay" or weigh veg holding the rest of us up, usually while talking to them in a faux cool way like "grab the label, mate". It doesn't make you look together and like a great parent. It makes you look like a bit of a twat!

As long as you don’t then complain about teenagers or uni students who haven’t got the faintest clue how to shop or cook.

Getting kids involved in running errands is actually pretty important in helping to bring up a functioning young adult. In any event, I spend enough time waiting behind people who are old enough to know better but don’t seem to have the faintest clue how to use either self-weigh scales or a self checkout.

Tbf OP, I've had a little kid try to run through me. Just stopped at my legs and their little legs keep on going Grin

People who pack at the till in Aldi. Use the twatting bench dickhead.

People who let their kids sit inside the trolley so their shoes, that have walked on pavements etc, are touching where the food/clothes go.

I saw a woman letting her daughter STAND in one of the little shallow trolleys the other day. She must have been somewhere between 6-9 at a guess? She looked like Rose on the bow of the Titanic, and I watched her sail past gobsmacked at how the mother thought it was appropriate, let alone safe.

placemats · 16/08/2025 13:29

People who are in a pretend rush around the supermarket who expect others to mind read their importance and expectations of priority.

BeeCucumber · 16/08/2025 13:29

Entire family groups. It’s not a day out - it’s shopping for food and seasonal tat. Leave your children and dogs at home. There is probably a cupboard under your stairs. Use it.

It really is

No, it really isn't.
You might struggle one day too.
In the grand scheme of things 30 seconds is no time at all.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 16/08/2025 13:30

The hapless husband that never goes shopping following the DW constantly getting in the way in an aisle or the two of them looking at item side by side plus trolley side on.
I always think could you possibly block off more of the shelves if you tried.

Neveranynamesleft · 16/08/2025 13:31

People sneezing into their hands then carrying on as if nothing happened...filthy bugs, germs and slime spread around everywhere....holding the trolley...picking things up...Revolting.

shellyleppard · 16/08/2025 13:31

@DysmalRadius go up one side....then the other?? Instead of going from side to side?? 🥴

How stressful must your life be to be mithering over a 30 second wait at the checkout tills?

Most folk where I live don't do that - our supermarkets aren't huge though. It would look a bit ridiculous going up then down the same aisle.

Have you quoted the wrong person?
I'm not the one complaining about have to wait a very short time. ✌️

JDM625 · 16/08/2025 11:48

Why don't you put a towel or blanket in your trolley then for your child to sit on?

Edited

That’s actually a genuinely helpful suggestion that I’ve never seen before, despite these threads coming up so frequently.

he’s older now and it’s not an issue any more, but if I’m responsible for another kid like him in future I’ll absolutely do that.

Sorry, I'm in agreement with you totally. It's the person you quoted that is the stressful one - definitely NOT you. Apologies for not making that clearer x

peacetree · 16/08/2025 13:38

I do my shopping online so i can avoid everything.

EssentiallyDecluttering · 16/08/2025 13:40

Kids running around or even just walking some distance from their adult, you don't know what they're going to do next.

Checkout staff that barely glance at you and don't make any effort to smile or chat, I know some may not be able to but for most it really can't be that hard to at least make eye contact and smile, say good morning or whatever.

Aisle blockers. I do chat in the supermarket sometimes if I meet someone I haven't seen for ages but try and keep to one side, a quiet corner or whatever, don't do it when it's busy and move immediately if someone needs to get past us.

@EverardDeTroyesElderly people are entitled to go shopping whenever they want. You are being exceptionally meanspirited.

I suppose so, though I am approaching elderly myself so if so, it will soon be against myself. Of course they can shop whenever they want, so why choose Saturday when it is mayhem (in our supermarket, anyway). I would think it would be more stressful for the elderly then than on a quieter day midweek.

Kangaroo1 · 16/08/2025 13:52

Our supermarket has normal tills. Then self service tills for trolleys and separate self service for baskets. People who have a trolley in the basket self-service drive me bananas. There is a literal whole section for trolley self-service which is HUGE and has a wide space especially for you.. why are you taking up loads of space in the basket aisle?

JadeSeahorse · 16/08/2025 13:52

People who whistle! 🤬

Can't bear whistling and there seems to be a certain breed of person - usually male - who think everyone in the whole supermarket wants to listen to their endless, tuneless noise.😡😡😡

Those who queue at the cashier point near to me and do it will most definitely get my best death stare. 👹

This, drives me nuts it doesn't seem to matter when I go there is always pickers and shelf stackers blocking aisles!

Just go round the other way they’re doing their job, who’s going to stack the shelves and pick orders? The elves?

EleventyThree · 16/08/2025 13:54

Sneeze into their hands and then immediately resume using them to push the trolley 🤢

Blocking aisles and access to shelves or doorways to have a good old chinwag with a pal. I swear to god I want to throat punch those fuckers!
