What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

Make it a family day out with all their kids. I will never understand couple that both go to the supermarket and take the kids when one could go on their own with a shopping list

For me having two under 3 I was stuck in all day as a very young sahm, I couldn’t drive so my partner came with me, he was hopeless at shopping and I wanted out the house, I was poor so no options to do things on rainy days and kids enjoyed looking at books and dvds

SnowFrogJelly · 18/08/2025 01:20

Stand in the middle of the aisle on their phones

Speaking of bashed and bruised it wasn't fruit but my fingers caught between tins as they were being launched towards me.
I let out a fuck sake and asked if they could be a bit more careful.

Yes she’s done this to me too!!!

my mother and father refuse point blank to tap. they think that they will be scammed 🤣 also refuse to use Google wallet
the mad thing is they are not afraid of technology use it very single day especially my father but no tapping is a big no no 🙈 my mother shocked sometimes I don't even bring my wallet out with me - I am like don't need to have my phone 🤷‍♀️

Tell them it's actually safer. If you Google, you'll find plenty of explanations why.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 18/08/2025 01:41

It really hurt hence the expletive!!

Supermarkets - putting their huge filling trolleys in the aisle and walking away. Every single time I need something it's blocking. Some are too heavy to push out of the way.

Also putting things on high shelves. I'm short & can't reach. So I climb...

People - no deodorant - Some people are so rank I have to leave the aisle. No idea why it's getting so bad.

Stopping & blocking the entire aisle with their 5 kids and I have to loudly ask them to move. They seem surprised.

People who start filling on the conveyor belt behind me while I'm still unloading my trolley. Once recently the checkout operator had to put something on belt to stop it moving because I had about 20 cm of space, and half a trolley load to unload! I'd asked the people to stop but they just said I had plenty of space!!

The Sainsbury's I use has just been refurbished. They’ve made the aisles really narrow and the fridges now have doors, which I find really annoying as you can no longer just quickly grab something if someone else is looking, there becomes a queue of women looking and men stood in the way on their phones. The narrow aisles also means that when staff are stacking shelves it’s hard to navigate around their huge trollies. This next thing only impacts me in Aldi as they still have staff scanning food, but it’s women who take forever to pay, so they will slowly rummage through their bag and then slowly look through their purse - then once they’ve paid they stand there sorting out their purse. Just move to the side and sort it out!

echt · 18/08/2025 02:17

Standing very close to me at the checkout. Like nearly touching. Covid seems to have sorted most of this out and generally people maintain a natural, courteous social distance, but when there's one it's always, always a man. I'd be just as pissed off if it were a woman but it never has been.

Blimey
Ive never seen this

I have, i also used to work on a till and you get customers who will literally just stand there while the items are piling up on the other side.
Other problems were when someone would put all their shopping on the conveyer and the say 'oh, i just need grab one one more thing' and then come back with a whole basket full as if they had just carried on shopping and no one was waiting for them. I had a customer who dumped her full basket at the end of a till then went and had a coffee expecting her basket to still be there when she came back. She hadn't asked us to hold on to it or asked us to put it in the fridge, she had just expected us to leave it lying around, by the time she came it had been taken and returned to the shelves cos we had no idea why it was left there and didn't think she was coming back for it.

Treat it as a family outing, mum dad and all the kids

We are a family of 5 and have never all gone to the supermarket together. Either i go and he stays home with the kids or he goes on his own. I get your situation though. My hubby would just take a list and go or even take 1 child to give me abit of a break at home

BrendaSmall · 18/08/2025 12:07

People who start to unload their trolley onto the belt when I’m still unpacking my trolley!
Parents who wait until they get their children from school and then go to the store
Parents who say no to their children and the children kick off so then mum says go and get what you want!
Children with those mini trolleys
People who reach over me when I’ve got the freezer door open trying to read ingredients as I’ve got allergies!

pinenuts75 · 18/08/2025 12:33

I’ve just come back from aldi, I was thinking of all the people commenting on this thread 😂 there was a lady at the front getting served packing her shopping in her wheely trolley, she was taking ages! But we all just waited patiently, don’t think anyone moaned not to my knowledge, then as I was leaving she was blocking the door still sorting out her shopping 🤣 I had to say excuse me, but no real harm done I guess.

The cashier at my local Aldi who speed scans and if you haven’t moved your stuff fast enough literally shoves it further toward you so that it squashes up and she can scan more.

DH thinks it’s hilarious that the faster she scans the slower I pack……

I once told her I prefer my fruit and veg not bashed and bruised and she looked at me like I had 3 heads….

At Aldi and Lidl you aren't supposed to be packing into bags at the checkout though! That is what the shelving AFTER the checkout is for. You move your trolley of things over there and pack there. Its their business model to keep prices low and the reason they speed scan at 1 million miles an hour.

You can do what you want really, but I think they prefer you to pack on the shelf, but they can’t stop you packing at the till.

For me when its when I'm in the store with my family mind you I'm 6 foot kinda muscular and I'm darker than my family I was walking my sister to the bathroom shes 9 she came out and some people looked at me and said your daughter is so beautiful I started laughing like a crazy person they looked at me confused I told them that was my sister and they were baffled

OptimusFry · 18/08/2025 13:40

I hate when you see young women wearing revealing clothing like they know what their doing and their getting the wrong kind of attention or this used to happen a lot at H-E-B people would be Vaping in the store and blow it in your face or right in front of you as you walk by them like your lucky I'm not tryna go to jail

howaboutchocolate · 18/08/2025 13:47

People who loom behind me and sigh and huff and puff while I check food packaging to make sure I can actually eat it.

They did try to enforce their procedures in the early days
but realised British people just do whatever they want

My local Tesco first thing in the morning is horrific for this!

They look at you like you shouldn’t be there if you say say excuse me please and god forbid you don’t dive out of the way if one of them is heading toward you……

Tesco express and Coop are bad for this!

Why not say something @echt like
‘ Excuse me you’re getting very close and it’s really Wierd and intimidating’

Most men I would hope would move back after being outed as potential perverts

judging by the people who are totally incapable of waiting a nanosecond while the person in front packs their shopping then pays, surely you love it is people go in pairs, it speeds things up.

MASSIVE EYEROLL at pp who asked if i have pockets. I wear women's clothes. No i bloody don't have useable pockets.

suburburban · 18/08/2025 18:59

Men- and it is always men- who put all their stuff through the checkout, whether it's the self checkout or one with a cashier, pay, and THEN, and only then, suddenly produce a bag and begin to pack the groceries, holding everyone up for another god knows how many minutes, and remaining completely oblivious.
Why can they not pack as they go like the rest of us??!!!!

I pack afterwards as the till doesn’t seem to be able to cope with the bags in the bagging area
