Cupboard Weirdos

I took delivery of fancy tomatoes yesterday. Really nice ones and a lot of them. The website I got them from has some very interesting recipes that I'm going to try out.

Anyway, it's got me thinking. I've had to buy some odd ingredients to make said recipes and I'm now the proud owner of about 10kg of fancy tomatoes and a bottle of pomegranate molasses. Pomegranate molasses! I know what a pomegranate is, but a bottle of pomegrante molasses?

I can see that my £4.50 bottle will probably be used for one tablespoon and live in my cupboard until I rediscover it when it's 15yrs out of date.

What weird things have you got in your kitchen cupboards? Or your fridge? I know I've got a jar of marmalade that I made about 5yrs ago lurking with an elderly cucumber in my fridge.

I’ve got pomegranate molasses in my fridge. If only I could remember what I’d bought it for when I used one tablespoon from it, I’d share the recipe and help you use a little more of yours 🤦‍♀️

Cluborange666 · 15/08/2025 08:36

Pickled walnuts. Also a tin of chicken in white sauce which needs to go in the bin. No idea why I bought it…

Francestein · 15/08/2025 08:37

I bloody love pomegranate molasses. Great for Turkish wraps. Goes brilliantly with lamb. Two teaspoons in the bottom of some fizz also lovely.

Cucumber marmalade! Please explainGrin

Orris root powder, bought for the child to experiment with home made pot pourri, is mine.

Edit: I see you meant marmalade AND a cucumber, not marmalade WITH cucumber. As you were.

Peaceisenough · 15/08/2025 08:43

Love this thread already.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:08

Well look at you, all fancy!!

I didn't even know pomegranate molasses were a thing and you lot have come up with a load of uses! I should go back in my cave and carry on trying to make a fire with a flint and a stick 😆

Wouldn't it be a good idea, though, if we could share our random ingredients! I'll start sharing cucumber marmalade @DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence(I wonder if that's a thing?!) and after I've tried the fizz and molasses, if it's as good as you say, I'll put some deckchairs outside and you can all come round and and bring your odd things!

Orris powder?? What on earth????

@Cluborange666 you can keep your pickled walnuts though!

I love a pickled walnut!

@SheherazadesSpringNonsense wouldn't it be great if we could post a tablespoon to each other as required?!

hello fresh have a lovely sticky beef recipe that uses pomegranate molasses

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:15

I'm going to have to try a pickled walnut now @Tinytigertail

Sigh.

That'll be another random jar in the fridge...

I have not one but two bottles of pomegranate molasses. Second bought yesterday as it was a clearance line in morrisons. And I actually made pickled walnuts one year for sil. It's going to be a bumper crop this year so I was tempted. Then I remembered what a palaver it was, had to prick them all and tge juice stained my hands black.

EveryKneeShallBow · 15/08/2025 09:19

I have a jar of bee pollen. I don’t even remember buying it. It’s a fancy little jar with tiny mustard coloured powdery lumps. 🤷

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:21

@outnumbered77 I don't like beef tbh. My DM used to serve up what was effectively shoe leather beef when I was a child and I've not been able to eat it since! Or pork chops, same reason.

But maybe the pomegranate molasses might be the answer?!

I shall make the recipe later. I think it's got tofu in it. I don't like that, either. Or hallumi. I should probably have started marinating the tofu in liquid smoke, essence of orchid and wild dandelion about a week ago...!! 😜

I'm setting up the deckchairs!!

I have just been given a courgette that could double as a baseball bat but my father, so any uses for courgette would be appreciated (beyond are normal use in sauces etc)

I sauté them with other various stuff.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:28

@Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride what on earth can I say???!! Probably no wonder it was in the clearance section and I've not even tried any yet?
Do you have a walnut tree? Is that also a thing?
My neighbour has a huge pear tree and apple tree so we could all go scrumping, drink fizz, eat pickled walnuts and paint ourselves with the orris powder to scare off the teenagers who may be lurking and thinking were up to no good!
@EveryKneeShallBow bee pollen?????? Pull up a deckchair, get yourself a glass of fizz with pomegranate molasses, I have lots of tomatoes to share - would those go with bee pollen??
Bee pollen...Google, where art tho???!

@TheNightingalesStarling @Peaceisenough
Maybe saute the courgette with some molasses and bee pollen with a side of pickled walnuts??

I pour pomegranate mollasis over my salad instead of balasamic vinegar. Delicious!!
I've been trying to use up the random spices in my cupboard....in the last couple of weeks I have opened the spice mixes bought from a food fair so we have had tandoori chicken and souvlaki chicken.....you can see I am not all that adventurous.
We have multiple packets of dried mushrooms I will send (open for an unknown number of years). I'd love to try the cucumber marmalade.

As for courgettes - i used to make a veggie lasagne with grated carrots and courgettes - it might have been an Anabelle Karmel kids recipe.
You can also use them in chocolate cake.

No idea what sumac is either. It didn't show up when I did a search on Sainsburys website.
Maybe it's like orris powder and pickled walnuts??

I should have told you the pickled walnut rule - they are only to be eaten at Christmas! Delicious from 1-31 Dec, just wrong at any other time of year!

That recipe looks delicious but pickled mint leaves!? Google tells me sumac is very tasty.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:38

@Mumdiva99 I remember my youngest making a courgette cake at school. I was full of trepidation but it was okay!
Souvlaki chicken? What's that?
And yes, send the dried mushrooms. We can add it to the cucumber marmalade!
Actually, I remember my XMIL giving me a load of dried mushrooms as a birthday gift one year. They're probably still in the cupboard along with the black squid ink pasta she gifted!

I had a pickled walnut in a cocktail once. It tasted of loft.
