Witches - spell help

lastminutetrip · 14/08/2025 11:09

Hey, looking for some advice as in all the years of spell work I have never had this happen before.

i did a spell on the full moon, all very well intentioned, to help me save money. I lit a candle in a special place to me, set my intention, and the candle blew out quite quickly. It was near a window, so I took it to mean spell completed ie wish made.

i took the candle home and lit it again later on the lionsgate portal night to strengthen my resolve. The wax kind of dripped on to my finger and burned me a lot. I’ve never had that happen before. I looked it up and some say it’s a warning (what can it be warning me about, it’s literally just to make me save money 😂) or - very differing view - the spell needed some kind of karmic or energy payment from me, and I “paid” with the burn to add strength and resolve to the spell.

any thoughts? I’ve done this a long time and never cast bad or ill intentioned spells so I don’t know what this was about! Has someone hexed me?

blessed be x

Careful, that poster will accuse you of trying to encourage other posters to talk to you from beyond the grave.

School prefect... I'm dead!! 😂😂
Please dont dig me up peeps

Oh, just STOP! We all know you are not dead! You are off, living on a beautiful island with J.F. Kennedy and his son, Jimmy Hoffa, Kurt Cobain and Tupac!

There are those of us who will not be fooled. 😆😎😉

@Kreepture who said anything about just online? There are a plethora of book and resources out there to read where you will learn more than on here.

So again, that's not research. That's a literature review.

Books about Paganism, Witchcraft, spells.. look on amazon or pop into a bookshop in the New Age section. Do some basic learning/research into it then find the thread on the philosophy section, or facebook groups, or witchtok and ask questions, join in the conversations.

I'm not being rude, but to me, it sounds like you don't have a great deal of knowledge given how vague your advice is. This advice could literally be applied to anything; "go read about it bro."

It's somewhat reminiscent of the tech bro culture which claims to be able to solve any problem by "doing research." (but again, reading resources online is not research. It's a literature review.)

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Well i'm sorry, what do you want?

Actual books, or would you like me to regale you, in depth, with all 30 years of my experience in being a witch, and all my beliefs, and hand it you on a plate?

If you want to 'get into' witchcraft, you have to LEARN ABOUT IT.

you will learn more buying reading books and researching it like any subject.

We don't have churches or religious books, Paganism and witchcraft are living breathing faiths where you can talk to 100 people and get 100 different points of view and specialist practices.

The £6billioner?

I fell into a huge hole (excuse the pun) over all this the other night. All the accusations of murder and mafia and everything. It’s all insane.

Sure. If you blow out the candles on a birthday cake and make a wish, is that not the same?

How about knocking on wood for luck?

My nephew blows out a candle and makes a wish. He's three.

FenywHysbys · 15/08/2025 20:38

whether you believe in it or not, spells are a complex construct of belief, focus, and attention to detail. I myself would not relight a candle unless the spell requires a section of candle to be burned for, say, seven days or for each night leading up to or away from a full moon. The spurt of wax could be a warning to pay attention or indicate that something is missing or not precise.

There is a meme somewhere that says it’s all very well making fun of a witch, but if they ask you for some of your hair, would you laugh and hand it over?!…

Rituelec · 15/08/2025 20:38

Can't believe how rude some responses are to someone's beliefs.

So if someone asked me about a field that I am an expert on, I would name a few introductory books with a surface-level synopsis of what the book is about and why I think it is good. I would also name a few leading names in the field whose work I find interesting. I would also name a few names who are more controversial figures, or people that I don't necessarily agree with.

I would also name websites and communities, if applicable.

I could also give them a brief overview of my own pathway and how my own journey has been.

Telling someone to "do your research" is the nonsense you find on tech bro channels on the internet (men who claim to be experts in an area while simultaneously having had no formal training), and it doesn't actually tell anyone anything.

I have plenty to spare(My hairdresser would probably be the first to curse me if anyone could. She and her brush and shovel certainly get a workout when I’m in) and it’s very odd but if it’s a friend/aquaintance then sure. I might tell a total stranger to bugger off though. Not because they can hex me with it but because it’s really fucking weird to ask complete strangers for their hair.

Isinglass20 · 15/08/2025 20:46

We’re all susceptible to ‘influences’. Pre Christian it was believed gods lived in water stones in nature and the sky. Christianity in what the church told you, then Martin Luther questioned this handed down by the church interpretation of the bible. In 30s unquestioned belief in Third Reich. Currently many but not all Israelis believe in Zionism. Many US citizens believe in Trump.

So OP can believe in candles and other world influences but all these beliefs answer an existing personal need for reassurance in face of uncertainty.

It is delusional but as long as recognised by the individual as giving some reassurance BUT it can be exploited for example by Sects or dictators and Sects are dictatorships and are totalitarian states.

I'm starting to think that Ihatewasps is fascinated by Witchcraft and would dearly love to learn magick 😂
Why else be so triggered? 🤔

piglet879 · 15/08/2025 20:50

I'm actually so sad that there is still so much vitriol and hatred for witches 💔
We are healers who use nature to guide us and this has always been hated by many.

It’s a literal message: don’t get your fingers burned. Look up the meaning, it’s essentially stop doing what you’ve done before

This sums it up in my mind. Careful what you are trying to manipulate.

Thank you for a refreshingly different thread 🪄

No.I’ve absolutely no desire to go all Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo. I’m quite content with the wonders of the natural world. That is fascinating enough without the additional guff.

Fair enough,

Thing is, in this it isn't as simple, because its such a huge subject, encompassing so many different aspects of practice, it would need some questions first.

What interests you? The spellcraft side of it, or the religion? The history of either? Do you feel drawn to a specific thing? Herbology, Candle Magic, Crystal magic, sigils, runes, tarot, Astrology?

Are you interested in Wicca? Druidism? Asatru? Eclecticism? Do you want to learn about Hedgewitchery? Green Witchery? Kitchen Witchery?

I can point you at the books i started with, that are heavily Wicca Leaning, even though i'm no longer Wiccan, it's often a good starting point in studies to expand out from.

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner is a very good grounding 'starter' book, there is a follow up book by the same author called Living Wicca, and he also has a book called The Truth About Witchcraft (Llewellyn's New-age) which is an informative read.

There aren't any particular website i'd recommend, i prefer books to learn from, but someone else on the earlier linked Witchy thread in Philosophy might be able to help there.

I won't recommend spell books because i think its important to have some grounding in the theory around it before trying anything practical, but if you DO want spell books, most do have some explanations about the spells, witchcraft and what they're meant for.

FenywHysbys · 15/08/2025 21:03

A good book to start with - Religion and the Decline of Magic by Keith Thomas. Then if you are still interested, Triumph of the Moon by Ronald Hutton. You can pick your path from there…

@NotfeelinguptoitYou don’t get to demand that anyone who has a differing opinion or viewpoint, moves along. That’s not how Mumsnet works, love.

You've just applauded Ihatewasps yet she just posted before you telling posters to move along to another board.
