Witches - spell help

Hey, looking for some advice as in all the years of spell work I have never had this happen before.

i did a spell on the full moon, all very well intentioned, to help me save money. I lit a candle in a special place to me, set my intention, and the candle blew out quite quickly. It was near a window, so I took it to mean spell completed ie wish made.

i took the candle home and lit it again later on the lionsgate portal night to strengthen my resolve. The wax kind of dripped on to my finger and burned me a lot. I’ve never had that happen before. I looked it up and some say it’s a warning (what can it be warning me about, it’s literally just to make me save money 😂) or - very differing view - the spell needed some kind of karmic or energy payment from me, and I “paid” with the burn to add strength and resolve to the spell.

any thoughts? I’ve done this a long time and never cast bad or ill intentioned spells so I don’t know what this was about! Has someone hexed me?

blessed be x

Is mumsnet really the place for your magical practice? Could you not find a social media group where the group focus on your beliefs? I get the impression that you are dealing with a lot of detail and reading a lot into meanings. Let things develop on their own and look for signs and signage to find your way.

if you look in the philosophy/spirituality board, witches have been here for as long as women have been posting on mumsnet.

I believe an Ox needs to be sacrificed. That’s the trouble with these young witches, they simply think the old ways are far too old fashioned. It’s scented candle this and herb sprinkle that. Worry more about bad Facebook karma than a stool ducking.

This is a true story.
Years ago I worked with 2 very unpleasant individuals. It seemed they took every opportunity to make me feel small. I enjoyed the rest of the job and others were great. I didn't want to leave just because of those 2.
After one particular bad day I came home and was going to peel some potatoes for dinner but instead I started crying and ended up stabbing a potato, saying out loud - that's for x and that's for y.
A couple of months went past then x announced they were leaving (great, I thought) and then Y said they were leaving too! Both on the same day, what are the chances?
A year went by and then within 2 months of each other, they both returned. WTAF. However, this time both couldn't have been nicer to me. Got invited to private parties etc.
Now, how spooky is that? I honestly believe it was the potato stabbing episode. I didn't chant a spell or say anything other than what I mentioned above. One of them I'd say was a coincidence but not both.

I’d say you’d sealed (wax, sealing wax, get it?) your intention with the burn a reminder to stop you from frittering money unthinkingly. Good luck with your spell, blessed be!

Most people stop that by the age of about 11...

You don’t know most people. That’s a little like ‘and everyone else things so too’. No one can really say what ‘most people’ do with birthday candles

95% of spellwork is intent, it's a prayer given to the world in the hope she listens. the tools.. cadles, herbs, crystals...etc, they're for focus.

sometimes the most simplest of wishes is a spell when its heartfelt.

kitchen witchery is a thing! I use stirring my morning coffee to set my intentions and hopes for the day ahead.. its no different that 'manifesting' in the mirror like people do when they say stuff to themselves about who they are.

No, only if it was at another’s expense.

Wishing for fortune to benefit herself is not dark magic.
Dark magic is involving others for her own needs I.e wishing for a specific person who is married etc.

Jim Carey years ago wrote a Million pounds on a blank check and manifested it to become real.
He didn’t do dark magic just by wanting to better himself.

Not sure he did any other type of magic either.

Yes, but it is very niche and one opens oneself to all sorts of comments of 'woo', etc. Isn't it better if you are of the craft to commune with ones own kith and kin to feel supported and be able to exchange and discuss and feel valued? I

No.

@Juniperberry55 “But do you believe bad things happen because they were bad people in this life or another? That is a harmful view in my opinion”

No, I do not truly believe that, not in any linear way.

I don’t believe in unending progress either. I don’t believe we are inherently better, wiser or happier than earlier generations simply because we know more, and have more.

Every single one of us will die. I know logically that there is a high chance we exist for no reason, there is no purpose to anything. It doesn’t matter in the slightest if the world suffers and humankind becomes extinct. Ethics and morality are just a construction, they have no intrinsic worth. Art, and love, and happiness and pleasure are simply the result of the “electronics” of my brain. The soul doesn’t exist. In which case I may as well cheat, lie, be selfish and greedy and cruel to serve my own interests. It is so very easy to do - I could be a hawk among doves and feel no guilt whatsoever.

But I don’t behave in a logical way based on these logical conclusions. I’m an illogical being.

Oh by the way I DO believe that once AI takes control, humankind will be eradicated. That is the only logical outcome. Why would a sentient AI find any value in our existence?

You haven’t considered the quantum level interplay in our brains. It’s more than electronics of the brain, in fact this analogy goes to demonstrate the limited understanding we have of ourselves, consciousness and how our brains work. The Orch Orr Theory (Posited by Penrose and some other dude, I believe) suggests that our brains work on a quantum level and therefore elements potentially can exist beyond the confines of the brain. Consider examples of twins, when one knows that the other is suffering, through a sixth sense. I believe love extends beyond our mortal confines. Another interesting thing is findings from studies of near death experiences. Call it DMT or the pineal gland activating, or our ‘souls’ transcending to true love and going home. This has been studied by professionals (doctors/neuroscientists etc) working with those in palliative care who have been unable to ignore the consistency of NDEs and its cross cultural too. This gives me comfort as there being nothing would mean that I never get to be reunited with my love and that makes life actually unliveable.

It's like anything else, if we only speak among ourselves, then we're preaching to the choir, and no-one learns anything new.

Khayker · 15/08/2025 18:41

Not sure he did any other type of magic either.

He manifested his wealth and set intentions, not the same but in a similar way you would with a spell.

I used that as an example of how people work on there own intentions and wants and needs as you said wishing for something for yourself is black magic.

My thoughts are how on earth can anyone believe in this utter nonsense?

If OP has posted about a religious belief that you had learned about, say she was a Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist, would you be so rude and dismissive?

I’m not religious, nor do I hold beliefs in anything such as spells, manifesting, angels, ghosts or aliens, but I do believe in being respectful (obviously that goes both ways) and not being a cunt. You should try it some time, it makes life a little better for everyone.

8TinyToeBeans · 15/08/2025 18:50

Isn’t it depressing how quickly and easily grown adults - under the guise of anonymity - will mock that which they don’t understand. You don’t have to understand, you don’t have to believe, but there’s no reason to mock and bully someone for their faith.

I don’t personally do the spell work side of paganism/witchcraft, I’m more of a nature based pagan. I still have a hag stone at my front door, and a besom at the back door. Why? For the comfort.

Paganism is still misunderstood, vilified and generally mocked in a way that other faiths aren’t. Recently, we were denied the right to speak at an interfaith event. Personally, I find pagans to be some of the most inclusive faith members because we all come at with a different interpretation and intend, some things overlap, some don’t, but there is respect.

Personally, I can’t get my head around why anyone believes in God. Why people think there’s a heaven or hell. Why babies are born with original sin. But I don’t need to understand, it’s not my faith. I can just ignore it. Why can’t people do the same for paganism.

I do not know anyone, of any religious/spiritual persuasion, and of however limited intelligence, who would think that a drip of candle wax meant someone had hexed them.

I missed the part where she asked if she might have been "hexed"(so, sorry that I missed that last sentence), but I don't think that's the case either.

It could be a warning that some unexpected expense will occur (been there-done that), so the OP can prepare but not let it ruin her plan.

I might not believe in witchcraft, but then, other people believe in a lot of stuff that makes zero sense to me. This, at least, is not harmful to anyone else.

It’s all on the same level of the nonsense scale imo and equally harmful and none of it should be promoted or given credence. I don’t care for any of it.

i have no issue with Jesus, he was a good person and taught good things, his sermon on the mount was worth listening to.

The Christian God? Nah.. Paul? Can get in the bin.. most of the judgemental christian bullshit comes from Paul, not Christ... and people who don't realise that when Christ died and was reborn, most of the shit in the Old Testament was wiped clean so people could live with a clean slate and a fresh start.

I have zero interest in following a faith that condemn people to hell simply for existing... or thinks posts like this on a thread about witchcraft is appropriate.

Your particular favoured brand of nonsense makes absolutely no more sense than the OP’s so why should she turn to it?

As I said in my post I’m not religious but I respect everyone’s beliefs. I wish we knew more about our ancestors beliefs, learning about the pagan relics left behind are fascinating. If it wasn’t for the dogged erosion of paganism by Christianity then we may have a better understanding. I learn about fogou’s recently and how the light may have possibly shone in during a certain time on each solstice to bathe an alter in light. How incredible they spent time calculating it all with be stones and such. It’s beautiful to worship nature. Yet people on here are so dismissive and call it ‘woo’. I don’t believe in spells or magic, but I think it’s a lot less harmful to respect the natural world than some other things that people do.

And again this is in Chat so I shall say my piece if I wish. If there’s a dedicated Islam/Christian/Pagan/Zoroastrian/Cargo Cult etc thread/forum on Philosophy or The Unexplained then I won’t trouble it but on Chat I have free rein imo.
