Phrases that make you realise you shouldn’t stay on a thread…

CurlewKate · 12/08/2025 18:38

Are there phrases that people post on threads that, if loads of others agree, you know you should get out before it makes you angry/unhappy? And then you don’t, and you get angry and unhappy and you’ve got no one but yourself to blame?

Currently mine is “politics of envy”

OP posts:

Anything in support of ‘Palestine’ or ‘Palestinians’ as I’m Jewish.

Posts implying that supporting Palestine or Palestinians is inimical to being Jewish 😉

MummytoE · 13/08/2025 09:33

"boy mum"

Hubby 🤮

You'd leave a thread because someone said "hubby"?
You mean anyone on the thread or just the OP?

Most of the things posted on this thread are annoying but very common so I would not leave a thread because of them. And I am really surprised that others would!

I think this is an interesting idea for a thread, OP, and I agree with you on "politics of envy". I get drawn to those threads but they are not good for me.

Two-tier Keir, Rachel from Accounts and "boat people" are others flags to me that I need to hide the thread.

Informative journalism at it's best.
Good job it's digital or else it would be written in crayon 🖍️

Sadly, I don’t think I phrased it right-I’ve ended up with a thread of annoying things, rather than what I was hoping for! Oh well, at least you got it..🤣

OP posts:

Yeah this. ^ I am not going to wilfully support someone, no matter how stupid or reckless their behaviour just because we both happen to have a vagina!

I also hate 'HANDHOLD PLEASE!' and will never go onto a thread where someone is asking for this. Why does anyone want someone to hold their hand? How is that going to help anyone?! Confused

'Am I pregnant?' Followed by a negative pregnancy test. (And how is anyone reading Mumsnet going to know?!)

Use your words. (Who the fuck started this bizarre and irritating phrase?!)

'Have you thought about using mounjaro?' on any thread where someone says they want to lose weight. (Often posted within the first 5-6 posts!)

People using 'boomers' and 'Karen' as an insult.

The competitive teeny-tiny eating.

The posters that regard anything over a size 8 as fat!

Anti-semitism.

'Food noise.'

'Man here.'

People who say 'sky fairy,' and imaginary friend' when someone talks about God or Jesus. These same rude feckers never say anything against ANY other religion, just Christianity.

Also roll my eyes to the back of my head at the instant accusation of racism to ANYone who shows any worry or concern at the number of boats coming across the English Channel.

There's loads more, but I would be here all night! Grin

!

Edited

Agree with all this.

I know it’s a common expression but I hate “ Shit show” or the use of “shit”

Frustrated On The Internet GIF by Offline Granny!

I do kind of get what you were going for, but honestly, if I see a 'hobby' or an 'ect' or a 'buckle up' or a 'boomer' I know it's either: troll or - not someone I want to engage with, so I am minded to leave the thread. (But then inevitably hang around to tell everyone how wrong they are!)

Itwasonlyaday · 13/08/2025 11:38

It’s lack of nuance and entrenched polar positions, especially when arguments go against most of the actual evidence. Posts that quote people like Allison Pearson.

smallglassbottle · 13/08/2025 13:54

I click off if there's no paragraphs and you're faced with a great wall of text, no punctuation, incomprehensible sentences and "he said", "she said", type drama, usually involving cousins or sisters in law.

LTB - most people can't afford to or face the upheaval.

Derogatory stuff about wildlife and how it's of no value and should invariably be killed. Same attitude, but towards trees as well.

stayathomer · 13/08/2025 13:56

Threads where the poster seems to have a lot of tough problems that I wouldn’t be able to help with or threads where the op is simply mean and starts attacking people!!

smallglassbottle · 13/08/2025 14:19

Threads where the poster says endless excuses about why they can't do something.

I can't brush my teeth.
Why not?
I don't have a toothbrush or paste.
You could buy one.
I can't get out to the shops.
Just use Amazon or something.
I don't have an account.
It's easy enough to set one up.
I don't have a credit card.
Find a site that takes Google pay.
I don't* *have a Google account.

😩

It's when they are worrying about something that isn't a problem - 'No, it's not the Law that you have to sacrifice your first born to Baal'.

'Oh, but my auntie says that I'm really silly and she's so stuck up and she's nothing special and where do you find the best shoes for a curvy 4 with size 00 narrow feet and what colour should I wear...

'It's not the Law. You do not have to do it'

<three pages of the OP mithering about what time to leave to get to the sacrificial chamber and what shoes to wear and if they need to take the first born with them>

'It's not the Law. You don't have to do it'

<two pages of debate about the best route, somebody talking about how they go there by private jet like a normal person and seven asking why she doesn't just drive - then fifteen about driving being an essential life skill and they taught their 17 children by the age of nine to fly F15s so it's not that hard to do>

'It's not the Law. You don't have to do it'

<Somebody wangs in something about Labour, Jeremy Corbyn, private school fees, immigration and that Keir Starmer's about to make it illegal for people to drive and they have to jog purposefully in a government issue grey tracksuit instead, with somebody else kicking off about how tracksuit legs are too short or the sizes are too large>

'It's not the - oh, fuck it.

So as not to drip feed ..... (whilst drip feeding in excruciating detail).

Boomer55 · 13/08/2025 17:03

"The ick". WTF is that about? 🙄

”It’s all Thatcher’s fault”

SomethingFun · 13/08/2025 17:17

Any posts about a shitty male partner that receive many many posts enquiring whether said shitty partner might be autistic. It’s impossible to have a proper thread about an arsehole anymore as everyone tippy toes around in case he is autistic instead of calling out what’s happening and helping the op.

Anything about careers or finances and posters start with ‘I asked my dh and he said’ because presumably finances and careers are for men.

Anything that reduces the whole human population of the world into two groups of thought that have no crossover and at least one must be thought evil by the other. Woke v bigots, boomers v millennials, Palestine v Israel etc etc. It’s destroyed any kind of debate (no debate!) and it’s tedious reading 100s of posts saying the same two things.

CatkinToadflax · 13/08/2025 17:27

Posters who think they know more about your child’s disability and their subsequent educational options than you do.

BarilynBordeaux · 13/08/2025 17:48

Relationship board. Every argument with or bad mood from your spouse, especially if they are a man, is abuse actually. And if not outright abuse then definitely coercive control. And if not coercive control than at the very least they are a ‘narc’, and everything apart from actual gaslighting is gaslighting.

People who are adamant their opinions about parenting and in particular step parenting are correct despite not being a parent/ step parent. Drives me crazy😂
