Phrases that make you realise you shouldn’t stay on a thread…

Are there phrases that people post on threads that, if loads of others agree, you know you should get out before it makes you angry/unhappy? And then you don’t, and you get angry and unhappy and you’ve got no one but yourself to blame?

Currently mine is “politics of envy”

On Facebook I once saw 'Colder sack' when they meant cul-de-sac 😬🤣

The funny thing was, they'd lived in it for 3 years.

I once screen shot a FB comment from someone who had written pannershockorlar (maybe not quite that spelling but the pannershock bit was right). Pain au chocolat.🙈

I’ve just looked to see if I still have the picture but I must have deleted it!

"Reach out"

Only acceptable if you're one of the Four Tops.

Agreed. My worst.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/08/2025 22:51

'We gentle parent ...'

  1. Grammatically offensive.
  2. Usually a sign that there's going to be ageism and oneupmanship.

So hard to avoid. I took a friend out for dinner the other day and she went into an anti Israel rant. She is highly intelligent but she even dragged out 'This exactly like the Nazis.' I couldn't begin to explain how very un-exactly like the rise of Nazism the current Hamas/Israel/Gaza situation is. I don't condone what is happening in Gaza. But I do recognise the situation is extremely complicated and it's not helpful at all to get entrenched in the notion: Israel bad, Palestine good, without any appreciation of the history of the treatment of Jewish people. Too many people I know are tunnel visioned about this and the rise of socially acceptable anti-semitism makes me deeply uncomfortable.

Well it's very different bring anti Israel (as in the state and the government) to being antisemitic as that's hating Jews for their existence. You can be anti a government and their horrible actions without hating the people of that state (and if you do it should be about hating them supporting the state rather than the whole identity if being Jewish or Irish or Black etc). They are not the same thing and whilst I wouldn't say the Nazis and what's happening now are the same, there are parallels (as there always are in war which always uses propaganda to justify it and especially in how other countries react to it and how much they police it) between how they justify it and how the Nazis did. I say this as someone who has studied the Israel Palesitne conflict from 1895 and writing plenty of essays/my own research on it.

Meghan and harry hate.

People who shoehorn trans people negatively into everything. I'm not sure where I stand, and have conflicting feelings about the whole thing, but it's so tiresome that it's mentioned on threads with no relevance.

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 12/08/2025 23:23

Anyone who replies with whatever.
Make's me immediately think of a petulant teen.

CallMeFlo · 13/08/2025 03:27

People use 'think' when their post is perfectly easy to understand

'The children have names that rhyme, think Jerry & Kerry'

And hand holding. I hats the requests for hand holding. Then you get 10 pages of 'holding your hand' It just sounds daft.

VoltaireMittyDream · 13/08/2025 04:01

I couldn’t live like that
raise your bar
I’d have to confront them

There was someone on here years and years ago who referred to the then US president as Barocco Barmer.

Senuousnotsensuous · 13/08/2025 04:09

For me it’s comments like:

”I’m not reading all that”
”I couldn’t get past the first paragraph”
”I only read the beginning but…”

Then they proceed to comment based on a few sentences.

Sometimes people do write a great big block of text that’s repetitive, most of the time it’s a few well written paragraphs that contain enough information to avoid being accused of “drip feeding” or the OP returning and giving additional information that get missed.

If I post I try to anticipate questions that might follow and include as much information as possible without waffling and I try to keep it brief. I get sick of people just responding to the OP and not keeping up with any developments.

I’ve had these comments a few times and I’m confused how people struggle to read just a couple of paragraphs when it’s taken me just a few minutes to actually write it all out. I have noticed that plenty of people are equally as confused at the reading ability or short attention span of some posters. I’m also becoming more and more convinced some people just comment based on the title in AIBU.

I guess I’ve just proved my point when I could have just commented “people who can’t be bothered to read the OP” 😂.

The other is: “log it with 101… NOW”
No one is “logging” anything, you make a report or not! There isn’t some kind of school report naughty behaviour system where criminals get bad behaviour logged until they commit a crime. It’s either worth reporting or not!

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/08/2025 05:42

It's going to be a long one ...

I have 3 friends, let's call them Ann, Beth and Cath.

£100k salary isn't a lot in London ...

Marilyn Monroe was a size 16

AIBU to ask ...

AIBU to wonder ...

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 05:47

Justanotherdramalama · 13/08/2025 06:01

I've only lost a stone this month. It's just so hard and slow to lose weight.

daisychain01 · 13/08/2025 06:19

Any post in which boomer, boarding school or middle class is mentioned is always dripping with jealousy, malevolent intent and nastiness, to which I instantly click away from, because the poster's view is so entrenched it's pointless having any discussion.

I also find victim blaming is far too liberally sprinkled in a thread where someone wants to give an opinion. People seem blinded to the possibility that there is another perspective to every situation and just leap to screeching victim blaming. I was going to point out on a thread that the morning after pill is not an appropriate contraceptive, but I didn't bother, I'm far more likely to think Not My Problem, it's a lot easier!

KhakiOrca · 13/08/2025 06:24

I have a friend (let's call her Jenny) she has a partner (let's call him Alan)

I stop reading as I usually think it's made up nonsense!

Or the ones with friend A, B, C D
Confusing as fuck

MayaPinion · 13/08/2025 06:30

‘Cite your sources.’

This is Mumsnet, not a peer reviewed article. Do I look like fucking Google?

MayaPinion · 13/08/2025 07:55

‘Why on earth did you marry him?’

‘Why did you have a baby with him?’

Well, let me know when you invent time travel, Sheila, so I can go back and not do that, and then I wouldn’t need to post here looking for some support.

"My DP always spends 10 minutes in the bathroom, is that normal?"

"10 minutes? TEN? You are aware that the tenth month is October and that 'octo' means eight, and eight rhymes with hate so he clearly hates women and you should leave the bastard"

😂😂😂😂😂😂

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 13/08/2025 08:22

Anything using ‘peri’ as an excuse. Since when did peri become such a big thing?

goldtrap · 13/08/2025 08:57

'Buckle up. This is going to be a long one'.

ect.

goldtrap · 13/08/2025 09:03

Hobby.

Arraminta · 13/08/2025 09:03

My little family.
My little one.

I always assume the poster isn't as educated as one would hope.

NebulouslyContemporaneous · 13/08/2025 09:11

Abuse of the terms autistic and ADHD.

Especially when someone says "I'm autistic [or ADHD] so I..." and then completes the sentence with something incredibly common that I and a million other readers experience without relating it to a special status.

redlightgreenlight123 · 13/08/2025 09:18

Hubby 🤮

menopausalmare · 13/08/2025 09:21

Stressing about Christmas arrangements in March.
