Phrases that make you realise you shouldn’t stay on a thread…

CurlewKate · 12/08/2025 18:38

Are there phrases that people post on threads that, if loads of others agree, you know you should get out before it makes you angry/unhappy? And then you don’t, and you get angry and unhappy and you’ve got no one but yourself to blame?

Currently mine is “politics of envy”

OP posts:

"Man here..."

I haven't heard food noise.

Is this the noise of someone chewing?

It refers to the constant thought of food, or food cravings. The term food noise is used in reference to weight loss injections. Ie someone might say " I think my Jag is wearing off, my food noise has returned " or " so glad I moved up a dose, food noise has totally disappeared"

HouseofDreams · 12/08/2025 20:50

It’s an invitation not a summons

always showing up on any wedding thread

SquitMcJit · 12/08/2025 20:51

I don’t love “Picky bits” either - but it has entered the vernacular, as evidenced by M&S running a whole campaign on it. So I think I might be wrong.

Anything with 'Discuss' at the end of the op

Anything which has 'Reader i....' absolutely fucking hate that

Reached out. What's wrong with just contacting people

And the suggestion that any kind of bad behaviour could be a sign of ND.

I was about to post “discuss” in a heading. I avoid any threads with this barked instruction. So rude.

Also any long posts without paragraphs. Impossible to read.

Any sentences starting “So”. I can’t stand this irl either.

Any posts which assume everyone has a middle class lifestyle and income.

Anything obsessing about UPFs. Makes me want to inhale all the beige food I can find immeadiately.

MounjaroBingo · 12/08/2025 20:56

Don’t come at me

MissyB1 · 12/08/2025 21:02

When the genocide deniers turn up.

Anything that implies posters think their pets are like their children aka " fur baby or dog mum"

That's me 😃

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 12/08/2025 21:08

Police. Now

Usually when a teen had thrown something in frustration or told a parent to fuck off - always something less than ideal but totally teen typical and relatively mainstream.
bonkers !!

GreenFlag · 12/08/2025 21:12

“Wonderful woman” and “You would say that to me if I was a man” is my sign to exit

Zov · 12/08/2025 21:13

soupyspoon · 12/08/2025 19:31

Oh yes that has reminded me of my favourite which is being accused of being a man - the worst thing EVER!
Misogyny because you criticise something a woman has done and also 'turning against women' like you have support every single woman despite her being a mass murderer or something, because you know, women should just stick together.

Yeah this. ^ I am not going to wilfully support someone, no matter how stupid or reckless their behaviour just because we both happen to have a vagina!

I also hate 'HANDHOLD PLEASE!' and will never go onto a thread where someone is asking for this. Why does anyone want someone to hold their hand? How is that going to help anyone?! Confused

'Am I pregnant?' Followed by a negative pregnancy test. (And how is anyone reading Mumsnet going to know?!)

Use your words. (Who the fuck started this bizarre and irritating phrase?!)

'Have you thought about using mounjaro?' on any thread where someone says they want to lose weight. (Often posted within the first 5-6 posts!)

People using 'boomers' and 'Karen' as an insult.

The competitive teeny-tiny eating.

The posters that regard anything over a size 8 as fat!

Anti-semitism.

'Food noise.'

'Man here.'

People who say 'sky fairy,' and imaginary friend' when someone talks about God or Jesus. These same rude feckers never say anything against ANY other religion, just Christianity.

Also roll my eyes to the back of my head at the instant accusation of racism to ANYone who shows any worry or concern at the number of boats coming across the English Channel.

There's loads more, but I would be here all night! Grin

!

When the genocide deniers turn up.

Haven't seen any on here? Just people debating about what a genocide really is. Are Russians comitting a genocide in Ukraine for ex.

Wemdubz · 12/08/2025 21:18

Big girl pants
Ducks in a row
Your bar is obviously set very low

And sentences that end with a no: “surely you asked her, no?”

CeliaCanth · 12/08/2025 21:19

“Wear what you want!” Not helpful when someone has started a thread genuinely asking for advice on what to wear for a specific occasion or because they’re not sure of their skin tone/body shape or whatever. Ensures that no-one else (eg me) gets any useful second-hand information either!

Just realised I’ve written a little unintentional poem 😁

ShoeeMcfee · 12/08/2025 21:23

I don't like the sanctimonious posts 'why did you have a child with this man?' 'my DH would never do that' etc

Slightyamusedandsilly · 12/08/2025 21:23

Toxic

Narcissist

No contact

Restricting visitors

Bonding time

There are only 2 sexes

MyRootinTootinBaby · 12/08/2025 21:24

People posting in third person eg “When you finally get to sit down after your sales job on your feet all day and your son shouts at you.” Why am I being roped into this when none of that is relevant to me? Just use first person pronouns and state what you want to state rather than trying to make it into a problem I relate to.

SEND, ND, ADHD.

Changeintheweathet · 12/08/2025 21:30

Virtue signaling - usually putting down another poster with a more sensitive conscience by suggesting they're deceptive and self-serving.

Whataboutery? - usually employed when a good point is made but entertaining it would involve looking at things from a slightly wider perspective.

Menz - usually a snide way of suggesting that any point of view that doesn't centre women in every aspect is synonymous with fawning over men.

KettleOn919 · 12/08/2025 21:31

"You sound like hard work."

moondune · 12/08/2025 21:32

I can’t bear the term ‘critical thinking’. It’s always used in a patronising and derogatory way. And is overused.
