Does anyone use Hello Fresh?

I just received our first box. Either we eat grossly huge portions or they appear to think I'm feeding toddlers as opposed to adults? This is the chicken portion and mashed potatoes for 3 people. Is this normal?

It’s probably about what I would do and guess they have measured weights but … given the cost of a boxed meals I’d want to be feeling nice and full afterwards. Not hard done by!!

LlamaNoDrama · 12/08/2025 14:30

I got 270g of pasta for 3 people which also feels tiny but google seems to suggest 80g per person is normal. Maybe it will help with our weight loss 🤣🤣.

That's a normal portion size if you're having something else with the pasta like meat or a substantial sauce. If you're just coating it in pesto and not adding anything else it's a bit small. So it depends.

The chicken looks right - one piece of chicken per person?

Once you’ve cooked it the portions are good. Dont think I’ve ever been hungry and I feel like I eat a lot! (Couple stone overweight)

user2848502016 · 12/08/2025 14:34

I have used them. We are 2 adults, 2 kids (teen and 10 year old girls)
I’ve always found the portions about right or sometimes generous enough for a small
portion leftover.
DH will eat a bigger than average portion and DDs and me all about the same amount/slightly smaller portion for the youngest.

What you have there is about what I’d make for 3 adults so I think you could do with reviewing your portion sizes tbh.

LadyLindaT · 12/08/2025 14:34

I found that Hello Fresh ingredients always looked very small, but, in fact, when cooked, were perfectly acceptable portion sizes. It was nice that there was no waste. I gave up on them when I bought honey-glazed sausages, but I had to provide my own honey!

ButterOllocks · 12/08/2025 14:36

I have used Hello Fresh several times and always thought you get a large adult size portion, love their recipes and find the ingredients to be high quality - wish I could afford this all of the time.

Yep, I work on 100g pasta per person with DH getting a bit more than DDs so it works out.
270g for 3 would work for us if there’s a lot
of meat & veg with it

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/08/2025 14:40

We have 60g of pasta per person and that seems fine 😅

LlamaNoDrama · 12/08/2025 14:43

Yikes well I'll definitely be reviewing our portion sizes then. I know our plates are rather large, I serve several dinners up in our pasta bowls because they're smaller.

I've found Hello Fresh portions to be plenty big enough and we sometimes have a bit left over. Having ingredients measured out really does help with portion control and it made us realise we were using way more pasta, rice etc than we needed to.

isitmytime · 12/08/2025 14:50

I used to use hello fresh and the final meal was usually a pretty decent portion and I’m a glutton and can eat for fun!
I did end up buying smaller dinner plates recently. My old ones were massive and definitely contributes to me over eating. I’m still fat though and still eat too much.

shellyleppard · 12/08/2025 14:53

@LlamaNoDrama i have used them in the past but.... hungry teenagers and their hello fresh portions do not mix well. My sons were constantly hungry so I cancelled the subscription. Plus its bloody expensive!! Can get larger portions but you need to pay extra so bye bye

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/08/2025 14:55

When I used them, there was always enough left over for another meal.

I stopped using them because after a while, everything seemed to taste the same.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 12/08/2025 14:55

We use Gousto rather than Hello Fresh but the portion sizes are similar.

Really made me realise when we first started just how much I really ate! I tended to make enough that I felt full afterwards, when that's really one of the reasons I'm overweight. That feeling of fullness is a sign that you've eaten too much, not that you've eaten enough. Really made me reevaluate my diet.

BurBurBarBar · 12/08/2025 14:56

OP, beware of starting threads like this on here as they bring out the competitive under-eaters. In a minute you'll have someone along to tell you that that would feed their household 2 lots of dinners with leftovers for lunch.

Whatshesaid96 · 12/08/2025 15:05

I would possibly bulk it out with more veg. I keep a load of veg chopped up in the freezer for random meals. So I'd probably roast a bit to pad it out a bit more if needed.

tripleginandtonic · 12/08/2025 15:07

Yes. It's great for portion control and actually more filling than you think.

Poopeepoopee · 12/08/2025 15:09

"That feeling of fullness is a sign that you've eaten too much, not that you've eaten enough."

It took me a long time to understand this but it's true.

Hello fresh portion sizes are standard. I think plates ARE bigger now and people then compensate by putting more on them which obviously contributes towards being obese. It aso explains why people come on here regularly saying that the portions are too small. They're really not.

FloraBotticelli · 12/08/2025 15:11

I found the portions a little bit generous for my household - a woman and a small tween. Might be a bit tight for a man I reckon.

It was all the tiny packets that drove me mad though - so much plastic and so many tiny blocks of cheese and crème fraiche left over as DS doesn’t like them.

Drivingthevengabus · 12/08/2025 15:16

We get Hello Fresh and I think the portion sizes vary I think. They always provide plenty of pasta and potatoes (those pots will make quite a bit of mash for 3 I think). However, they are more stingy on the meat front - especially chicken breasts - understandably because it's the expensive bit. I nearly always bulk out with extra veg. I find that their taco/wrap recipes are the most stingy - usually just over a dessert spoon of filling per wrap.

However, as PP have said, I'm not hungry after eating the meals!

LadyWiddiothethird · 12/08/2025 15:16

Yes,have had them weekly for over a year.I find them big enough portions,2 of us,but we are not big eaters.

They definitely wouldn’t be big enough for big eaters.I love them and have saved loads of money,no longer shopping and coming back with all sorts of shite food that was not needed.

HotDogKetchup · 12/08/2025 15:18

The portions tend to be quite mean. Two small chicken breast. I’d use 500g or 600g of chicken breast usually for a meal. I ended up supplementing them a lot. There was never enough potatoes and I’m feeding 1 DH, two DC 4 and 6 and me.

NewsdeskJC · 12/08/2025 15:19

Its called Goodbye Fresh in our house. Out of 6 meals, 3 recipe cards were missing, gone off chicken for 1 and missing ingredients for 2 others

Silverbirchleaf · 12/08/2025 15:20

We felt the portions felt small, and often added a salad to our meal. Preferred Gousto though.
