..I'm afraid this bright idea is something some in the UK were warning off.

Rather than actually increasing defence spending by recruiting people and also buying things, various, that are useful to those recruited, you can increase it by moving spending from other departments into the Defence Budget,.or worse still rob the defence budget by using it to fund none military government functions.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/oct/04/bbc-bosses-want-defence-budget-to-help-pay-for-the-world-service

Edited

Interesting. I’m assuming that the BBC is selling the world service as a global influence as another strand in defending democracy and as a defence against Russian propaganda. This is true but needs to be in addition to and not instead of wider spending.

I think that's the BBC line, but as a former listener to the World Service when on my travels I think (and this is very much IMHO) over the years certainly the audio output lost it's way a bit, and became less and less about projecting British values/news from London and seemed to become more intent on pushing a global POV.

Have to say I haven't listened for a while (it's shortwave operation has really scaled down) and haven't looked on line.

DrBlackbird · 05/10/2025 19:14

That wouldn’t surprise me @notimagain because my sense is that many in the BBC feel ashamed of and horrified by British imperialism and are trying to amend for its shady past. To my mind, throwing out the baby with the bath water.

MissConductUS · 05/10/2025 19:32

National Public Radio in the U.S. broadcasts international news from the BBC as part of its regular programming schedule. I don’t know if they pay for it or if there’s a reciprocal content swapping agreement between them.

I am a regular NPR listener, so I hear it frequently. It’s done specifically for the U.S. market as the financial news always coverts monetary amounts to US dollars, even if it’s discussing the UK economy or budget.

Hearing the British accents always reminds me of the people I know on Mumsnet. 😊

I agree strongly.

I've noticed another new attack vector recently. I want to post about it but need to summon the energy and braincells first (both in short supply here).

Perking it's a monday morning, but as and when you have time over the next day(s), would be interested to read what you're thinking.

Drone Strike Sparks Massive Blaze at Crimea’s Largest Oil Terminal (https://united24media.com/latest-news/drone-strike-sparks-massive-blaze-at-crimeas-largest-oil-terminal-12208)
Explosions rocked occupied Crimea as drones struck multiple sites, including airfields near Saky and Kacha, as well as targets in Feodosia, Yevpatoria, and the Simferopol district, according to the monitoring channel Crimean Wind on October 6.
One of the most powerful strikes hit (t.me/Crimeanwind/87362) the Feodosia oil terminal, where a massive fuel tank exploded, sparking a blaze visible for miles. The facility, one of the largest in Crimea, can store up to 250,000 tons of fuel and supplies for both Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and ground forces.

German police have deployed a laser system to protect Munich Airport, according to Bild.
The device was positioned near one of the runways following a recent drone incident. It can measure the distance to drones, which could help in intercepting them.
The Central Office for Combating Terrorism and Extremism is investigating who is launching the drones.
Inflatable mattresses and 3,000 folding beds are being prepared at the airport terminals to provide passengers with basic comforts in an emergency. Drinks and light snacks will also be available if needed.
Munich Airport has previously suspended operations several times due to unknown drones, which had also been reported circling over a nearby Bundeswehr base.

Dutch Prime Minister Schoof is visiting Ukraine. He has already met with President Zelenskyy. Together, they honored the fallen Ukrainian defenders.

The airport in the Lithuanian capital was closed due to balloons carrying contraband Belarusian cigarettes.
A total of 25 balloons were detected after crossing from Belarus, carrying 12,000 packs of cigarettes.

❗️During yesterday’s massive strike, Russia used 549 weapons of mass destruction against Ukraine, containing 102,785 foreign-made components, President Zelenskyy said.
Among them: about 100,688 components in strike drones, 1,500 in Iskanders, 192 in Kinzhals, and 405 in Kalibrs.
According to Zelenskyy, the components were produced in the USA, China, Taiwan, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, and the Netherlands.
U.S. companies make converters for X-101 missiles and Shahed/Geran drones, matrices for these UAVs, analog-to-digital converters, and other microelectronics. Each Shahed contains at least 50 units of microelectronics made in China and Taiwan.
Switzerland produces microcontrollers for drones, Britain makes microcomputers for flight control, Japan manufactures optoisolators for cruise missiles, and Germany — switching connectors.
Processors are made in the Netherlands, and servo drives and bearings — in South Korea, Zelenskyy added.

Lithuania has launched its largest-ever mobilization exercise, Vyčio Skliautas 2025, LRT reports.
From today until October 11, large-scale crisis readiness drills will be held across the country, involving all 60 municipalities, over 100 government agencies, and around 2,000 participants.
The goal is to test Lithuania's ability to reorganize resources, provide defense, and maintain critical services in the face of a threat.
The exercises will include hybrid attack scenarios, evacuation of citizens, public alerts, and coordination between the army, police, Border Guard, and medical facilities.

🇸🇰 The Slovak government is interested in new defense projects with Ukraine, said Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák.
Speaking at the third International Defense Industry Forum in Kyiv, Kaliňák noted that Ukraine’s defense experience is “unique and literally tested by fire.”

President Zelenskyy: In recent days, Ukraine has been using exclusively Ukrainian weapons to strike targets in Russia, not just drones.
Other statements from the president:
▫️We expect greater capabilities, but they depend on financial resources.
▫️Our winter defense relies primarily on air defense missiles. For Patriots and NASAMS, we purchase missiles mainly from the US. Everything here depends on the PURL.
▫️We have begun discussions with countries about the second phase of their contribution, as we are not seeing sufficient speed from other states.
▫️We have supplies—the US has not blocked anything.
▫️The Russians do not understand the cost of these blackouts and the challenges Ukrainians face. It is not a question of morality, which they lack, but of physical reality.
▫️Ukraine is responding by striking Russian military facilities and energy infrastructure. We would prefer not to do this; we want peace, but the Russians are not willing.

🇺🇦 For the first time in NATO history, the Ukrainian Navy led the command of forces at a large-scale exercise in Portugal.

The Kirishi Oil Refinery, one of Russia’s largest, has shut down its CDU-6 primary oil refining unit — its most powerful — after a drone attack and subsequent fire on October 4, Reuters reported, citing two industry sources.
The plant could take about a month to restart. The shutdown may reduce oil product output amid Russia’s ongoing fuel crisis, as the country already faces shortages of some popular gasoline brands due to regular Ukrainian drone attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to the sources, CDU-6 has a capacity of 8 million tons per year, or 160,000 barrels per day — around 40% of the refinery’s total processing capacity.
The company, controlled by Surgutneftegaz, is also repairing another primary refining unit damaged in a drone attack in mid-September. Surgutneftegaz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
During CDU-6 maintenance, the refinery is expected to operate at about 70% of capacity, using other units running above nominal limits.
In 2024, the Kirishi refinery processed 17.5 million tons of oil — 6.6% of Russia’s total refining volume. Last year, the plant produced 2 million tons of gasoline, 7.1 million tons of diesel fuel, 6.1 million tons of fuel oil, and 600,000 tons of bitumen.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discovering the principle of the human immune system.
The laureates are American scientists Mary E. Brankov, Fred Ramsdell, and Japanese immunologist Shimon Sakaguchi.
They made groundbreaking discoveries in peripheral immune tolerance—a process that prevents the body’s immune system from attacking itself.
Their research identified the “guardians” of the immune system: regulatory T cells. These cells ensure the immune system does not harm the body’s own tissues.
This work laid the foundation for a new field of biomedical research, with potential to treat autoimmune diseases, improve cancer therapies, and prevent complications after stem cell transplants.

Over 40% of the weapons used by Ukraine’s Defense Forces on the front lines are domestically produced, President Zelensky said.
He expects this share to increase to at least 50% by the end of the year.
According to him, Ukraine is already producing 40 Bohdana howitzers each month. Last year alone, the country manufactured 2.4 million mortar and artillery shells.

In recent days, Russia has destroyed two transformer substations that supplied electricity to Kharkiv.
The city’s mayor noted that “judging by the pace of attacks, it’s already clear that the coming winter will be the hardest for Kharkiv since the start of the war.”
At the same time, he said that thanks to the coordinated work of energy and utility services, the consequences of the strikes are being quickly eliminated.

President Zelensky has instructed officials to develop key elements of Ukraine’s weapons export program.
The program’s working title is “Zbroya” (“Weapons”). According to the president, agreements have already been reached to open export–import platforms in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, with plans to launch them by the end of the year.
He added that the initiative concerns the export of Ukrainian weapons that are currently in surplus, without specifying particular types.

🇲🇩 Moldova has joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
Eight Moldovan commercial banks have already been granted SEPA participant status.
The Single Euro Payments Area is an EU initiative aimed at integrating payment systems to simplify euro-denominated bank transfers. It currently includes 41 countries.
According to the National Bank of Moldova, while international transfers previously cost between €20 and €200, they will now be processed under EU standards — for just a few euros or even free of charge.
Thanks to Moldova’s integration into SEPA, local exporters are expected to save around €20 million annually.
▪️The National Bank of Ukraine began negotiations to join SEPA in July 2022. Membership would allow citizens and businesses to make euro transfers between European countries quickly, with no extra fees and under clear, uniform rules.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a 16-year-old from Kharkiv who helped organize terrorist attacks in Ukraine while operating from EU territory.
After leaving Ukraine in 2024, he sought “easy money” on Telegram, where he was noticed by Russian intelligence. After being recruited, the teenager was tasked with finding individuals in Ukraine willing to carry out terrorist attacks. He passed their contacts directly to Russian agents, who then instructed them.
Two of those he recruited — both 15-year-olds from Kharkiv — planted explosives near police departments in the Slobidskyi and Kholodnohirskyi districts of the city in December 2024.
The suspect was detained at Ukraine’s western border after being handed over by Polish law enforcement. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
