DH wants to wear shorts to birthday meal

I've arranged a big family lunch at a very smart hotel to celebrate DH's Significant Birthday. He's worn shorts every day over the summer (he doesn't work). I said he should wear long trousers but he doesn't see why he should. What do you think?

OP posts:
crumblingschools · 10/08/2025 13:49

@TinyTempest may have to change anyway if there is a dress code

Doingmybest12 · 10/08/2025 13:55

OP still hasn't said if he knows where he's going, that's why I said bung trousers in the car nit because I think op is his mum

PInkyStarfish · 10/08/2025 13:47

He’s a slob.

Do you think that women who wear knee-length skirts and dresses, rather than ankle-length, are also automatically slobs?

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/08/2025 13:57

PInkyStarfish · 10/08/2025 13:47

He’s a slob.

He really isn’t 🤣

Starzinsky · 10/08/2025 13:59

What's wrong with shorts. A bit like saying a women shouldn't wear a skirt.

grumpygrape · 10/08/2025 13:59

RentalWoesNotFun · 10/08/2025 13:13

I would cover all bases.

  1. phone the hotel and check the dress code

  2. buy him nice comfy chino shorts and a button down top for his birthday that he can wear on the day if he wants. That way he won’t wear union jack shorts and a vest or something hideous.

  3. Take a spare pair of trousers (and shoes to match if necessary) secretly in the boot just in case there are any issues with dress code if youve been misinformed.

It could be that he has put on weight and has no comfy nice trousers that fit and doesn't want to be miserable wearing ones that strangle him. And doesn’t want new trousers now hes retired as it feels like a waste of money. So choose the shorts size carefully

4 Buy him a skort then he won't be contravening any 'No shorts' rule.

HTH 😊

SprayWhiteDung · 10/08/2025 13:43

Absolutely - as long as it isn't his birthday suit Grin

Boom ….. 🤣

TinyTempest · 10/08/2025 14:00

SprayWhiteDung · 10/08/2025 13:48

I can't believe the number of people on here saying that OP should pack some trousers for him in case he changes his mind (or maybe she puts pressure on him).

He's a middle-aged/older man!

Don't forget to also pack him a spare shirt in case he gets windy-pops and sicks up his nom-noms on the first one, his pushchair in case he gets overtired and doesn't feel like walking, and his special blankie in case he gets upset in unfamiliar surroundings.

Yeah, I said earlier in the thread, I wonder if the OP cuts his food up for him? 😂😂

crumblingschools · 10/08/2025 14:03

Bit like taking a tie if you need one, but would rather not wear one. And people are addressing the OP as she has started the thread. If the DH had started the thread I would say to him to take trousers as a just in case

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 10/08/2025 14:07

I've just been in the South of France. Plenty of men, of all ages, looking marvellous in shorts, shirts and nice sunglasses. I hope he enjoys his birthday.

thebraveryofbeingoutofrange · 10/08/2025 12:24

Yes, it’s a thing. At the time of 11.59 pm on a man’s 49th birthday, something supernatural happens and he wakes up with shit legs the next morning.

Edited

Oh god. My husband has lovely legs but he is 48 this year. Shit.

Also, does this shit-leg-wizardry happen to women?? 👀👀

So if she wasn't planning on wearing tights - as it's going to be a hot summer day - and he had 'just popped a pair in his bag for her, just in case either of them later thought it might be more appropriate' - would that be totally normal?

Cannedlaughter · 10/08/2025 14:11

you could take a pair of trousers with you. If he gets it wrong sometimes he may be glad you have them. If it’s all fine the trousers stay in the bag.

Rewis · 10/08/2025 14:13

Depends how fancy the venue is and what type of outfit. I think chino shorts with a button down and some nice shows look good.

But to be fair, i don't really see why men wearing shorts is inappropriate office wear either. Thankfully it is fine in our office.

crumblingschools · 10/08/2025 14:14

@SprayWhiteDung to be fair it is much more likely that OP may have a bag to be able to put things in. I have taken tights as a just in case when going somewhere. Ties can be put in pockets. But my comment including a 'you' was a collective 'you'.

CoralOP · 10/08/2025 14:18

youreactinglikeafunmum · 10/08/2025 11:45

He should be grateful and stop whinging, honestly

Hes been able to spend the entire summer in shorts, its not like his life is hard

Its just one evening 🤷‍♀️

What a strange response, you know nothing at all about his life 🤷‍♀️
May be recovering from cancer, lost children, have a disability, medically retired, you literally know nothing about how hard his life is..

You don't think the OP would have mentioned any of this, if so?

ChuppaChupp · 10/08/2025 14:24

I wouldn’t give it a moments more thought. I’m glad you aren’t going to worry about it either.

im surprised at all the posters who suggested you get involved. Life’s too short to care what someone else is wearing.

No, women are immune. All over for poor husband then, better start hiding him away.

True. She didn't even say why he didn't work either - just got straight to the most important point about how unthinkable shorts are!

People are literally telling the OP that she should stick some trousers in the boot of the car and that she should ring the restaurant and check the dress code.

He's retired.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 10/08/2025 14:31

Surely it depends on the dress code of the hotel restaurant you’re going to, @Lins77? I mean, if they specify no shorts, then he wouldn’t be allowed in at all, would he, which would be a bit of a pain as he is the main guest.

Whoaaa calm down

You dont know anything about his life, and its strange that you're saying he could be unwell when it hasn't been said

Had it been said that he was unwell, all of the responses would be different

There's no reason not to take the thread at face value - which is, its a thread about whether husbands shorts are appropriate at a nice restaurant

Just making a mountain out of a lighthearted molehill of a thread
