DH wants to wear shorts to birthday meal

I've arranged a big family lunch at a very smart hotel to celebrate DH's Significant Birthday. He's worn shorts every day over the summer (he doesn't work). I said he should wear long trousers but he doesn't see why he should. What do you think?

OP posts:

I would want my husband to not wear shorts for a special occasion.

Honestly, he can relax any of the other 354 days of the year!

Tbh, i suspect the op will give in, as long as theyre smart, so my commitment to this thread is waning but 🤷‍♀️😭

Hes lucky though, to have a wife who cares enough about his bare legs and his birthday

Mind blown.

He can relax any day other than his birthday? Seriously? OK then.

It’s his bloody occasion. He can wear what the hell he wants to if the hotel permits it.

He might

Although I dont see it 😭

I mean, as an adult we have to do things like attend a birthday party 🤷‍♀️ - maybe as a compromise they could have a private evening in, before or after, with some cake and everyone could wear shorts!

We don't HAVE to attend our OWN birthday party FFS! That should be a treat, not a duty,.

Cinaferna · 10/08/2025 13:30

I decided a while ago that it was not my job to police what other people choose to wear, nor would I feel ashamed on their behalf. I recently took adult DC, their partners and DH out for a big family dinner at a good restaurant. I was paying as it was a treat to celebrate a number of good things that had all happened at once. I'd have loved them to all wear smart clothes, long trousers, but it was mid heatwave. DS1's partner came in tiny too-tight shorts, DS2 turned up in a dress, which he does at times. I just thought, sod it, if the waiters want to judge, let them. No one seemed to care.We had good fun.

Yes 👍 it is ok

Most upmarket restaurants won’t allow anyone in wearing shorts and specially men!! What will he do when he’s told he isn’t wearing the correct dress code and needs to get changed as they won’t allow him in otherwise? Trainers and jeans are other types of clothing I’ve seen men refused entry into decent restaurants where everyone else has made the effort

There are plenty of very upmarket restaurants here in London that allow smart city/chino shorts.

If they didn't, they'd be like a ghost town when the offices close and the restaurants get busy.

👏👏👏

Off to enjoy the garden. Maybe in shorts. This thread is beginning to feel like a parallel universe.

Fucking hell some of you - he is wearing a pair of bloody shorts not a fluorescent green mankini !! . My nearest town is Tunbridge Wells (not known for its liberal attitude in sartorial matters) but bugger me - can’t move for blokes between 18-90 in a rainbow of colours (mostly red and mustard) wearing smart shorts.. if the very posh restaurants didn’t serve these very wealthy captains of industry in their summer uniform.. then they would miss a fortune and go bust !

Yep.

Of course I do - I've gone to a lot of trouble to make it nice for him. I just don't want him to feel like he's dressed inappropriately when he gets there. But I'm not going to insist.

Shorts are absolutely fine, I've known people who have worn shorts to weddings

redskydelight · 10/08/2025 13:32

Unless he's going to be turned away for wearing shorts (and even if there is a dress code, it might well be less strict for a lunch, than for an evening meal), he can wear what he wants.

Unless it's a buffet, you will surely all be sat at tables and no one will actually see his shorts anyway.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 10/08/2025 13:32

Some of you are a bit aggressive on this thread

Its a lighthearted discussion ffs 😭😭

Agree, dont agree, no-one will die over a pair of shorts

ILikeBigBurpsAndICannotLie · 10/08/2025 13:32
  1. It‘s a hot day
  2. It’s his birthday meal
  3. He’s an adult
  4. He will be sitting down…
  5. .. assume nobody will be under the table judging all the leg attire?..
  6. .. are you ok with ladies at the lunch wearing skirts and trousers which are above the ankle?
  7. If this was a husband suggesting his wife wear a floor length dress as it’s more “appreciate”, we all know the words “abusive” and “controlling” would get lobbed around.
  8. Enjoy the lunch.
Rememberwhatthedoorknobsaid · 10/08/2025 13:35

Tailored shorts? Yes. Sweatpant shorts or similar? Absolutely Not.

Grammarnut · 10/08/2025 13:41

He's old enough to make his own sartorial mistakes. Why does it matter that the hotel is 'posh'?

TinyTempest · 10/08/2025 13:42

Literally the only thing that matters here is the hotel's dress code.

If they allow shorts then he should wear shorts.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 10/08/2025 13:43

I would check the dress code but I’m sure smart shorts would be fine (wouldn’t bother me).

We went to a very smart hotel for lunch last year and I couldn’t believe the state of some people- looked like they were in their sitting at home clothes.

SprayWhiteDung · 10/08/2025 13:43

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/08/2025 12:43

Maybe because it’s his birthday and it should be about what he wants/feels comfortable wearing?

Nothing weird about that.

Absolutely - as long as it isn't his birthday suit Grin

One of the lovely things about ageing. Not giving a monkeys what other people think. Like being rich 🤣

Could you take some trousers with you, just in case he feels uncomfortable and can change in the toilets. Depending when and where it is, you could be in heatwave time and others may be in shorts (or wishing they were!)

Lol she's not his mummy.

PInkyStarfish · 10/08/2025 13:47

He’s a slob.

SprayWhiteDung · 10/08/2025 13:48

I can't believe the number of people on here saying that OP should pack some trousers for him in case he changes his mind (or maybe she puts pressure on him).

He's a middle-aged/older man!

Don't forget to also pack him a spare shirt in case he gets windy-pops and sicks up his nom-noms on the first one, his pushchair in case he gets overtired and doesn't feel like walking, and his special blankie in case he gets upset in unfamiliar surroundings.
