Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

Well done for sitting it out OP, a&e on your own is no walk in the park. And also quite shocking you were advised to go home and see your GP, who no doubt would have told you to go back to a&e! I had a recent a&e trip on my own and I’d forgotten how overwhelming it is in there when you’re feeling really bad yourself. Also being on your own with nobody to distract you doubles the worry. It sounds like you’re under the right care now and I’m sending you lots of good wishes 💓

TokyoSushi · 08/08/2025 07:21

Oh gosh, I’m so pleased that you went - get well soon!

WellIquitelikesprouts · 08/08/2025 07:25

Well done for persevering OP. The initial hospital response to your emergency is horrifying but you’ll be ok now. Hope you feel better soon.

Incorrect! Sepsis is identified through a series of clinical examinations with blood tests being a part of the diagnosis! If doctors relied only on blood tests which can can take up to a couple of hours to come back it in some cases would be too late!

Thanks for clarifying. I meant she needed to push for a blood test too, as the initial assessment didn't seem very thorough. I had sepsis myself last year. My symptoms were sky-high temperature (41+), chills, rigor (shaking) and tachycardia. Including this information for awareness.
My GP assessed me originally and told me to go to A & E immediately.

Hope you get better soon OP.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/08/2025 07:26

Glad that you've been seen now, OP, and hope you're feeling a bit better now.

beachgirl2 · 08/08/2025 07:29

Just wanted to send my love and wish you a very speedy recovery. Sounds like it's been a horrible night but hope you get the right treatment and can be on your way home soon.

For what's it's worth I had cellulitis a few years ago and feel I was fortunate it was taken more seriously at triage. I had surgery the next day to cut out some of the infection and was in for a few a more days on IV antibiotics. Just because it's not sepsis (thank goodness) doesn't mean they should fob you off.

Whatshesaid96 · 08/08/2025 07:29

Glad you are now in the right place and care is being given. Hope you feel better soon.

I wish I'd been as strong as you the other day when I was fobbed off by OOH. I ended up at my GP in the end who saw me within the hour of my econsult and diagnosed me immediately.

Roseblooms7 · 08/08/2025 07:29

Glad you are in the right place.

My beloved Dad died two years ago from sepsis after developing a diabetic wound on his heel. He was sent home initially and died two days later from multi organ failure. I am now suing the Hospital where he died for clinical negligence.

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2025 07:32

I’m glad you stayed.

and the fact you’ve been admitted and are being transferred showed you made the right decision.

I live MN for this reason. So many woman supporting woman to advocate for themselves and demand to be taken seriously.

legosnowqueen · 08/08/2025 07:33

Well done for persevering, & good that FIL was supportive. Hope you recover quickly now that you are getting the right treatment 🌻

TimeForABreak4 · 08/08/2025 07:37

Glad you stayed as clearly the triage nurse was wrong. You'd have went home and then had to go through the whole process again today after seeing the GP when you'd have likely been more ill. Hope things happen quickly today and you are on the road to recovery soon.

Natsku · 08/08/2025 07:38

So glad you stayed. The triage nurse should not be ruling out sepsis without a blood test when there is a clear infection already.

Anewuser · 08/08/2025 07:45

Well done for ignoring the nurse. Going home is completely wrong before you’ve even seen the doctor. It’s not her place to diagnose, she’s triage.

They don’t admit you, when beds are like gold dust, for nothing.

I wish you have a speedy recovery.

Superhansrantowindsor · 08/08/2025 07:47

As soon as I read your op I thought cellulitis. My mother had that when I was an out 12. Never seen her so ill before or since. So glad they are looking after you op.

mcmooberry · 08/08/2025 07:52

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 08/08/2025 07:04

I stayed and was seen about 4am.

The Dr did admit me. He doesn't think it's sepsis but it is a nasty case of cellulitis that needs monitoring. He took some bloods and set up an IV for fluids as I'm a bot dehydrated. He also gave me some tramadol for the pain which meant I fell asleep and even dozed through the transfer up to the medical ward at 6am.

This is a tiny hospital that only does day surgery. So the plan today is to arrange for me to be transferred to the bigger hospital for the surgeons to take a look at the abscess as it will probably need to be surgically drained.

I hope the triage nurse gets to hear about this and learns to keep her inaccurate and potentially dangerous opinion to herself.

LushLemonTart · 08/08/2025 08:00

Thank goodness you stayed. I hope you soon feel much better.

MissyB1 · 08/08/2025 08:01

Thank goodness you stayed! What a sad state our NHS is in, but at least you are getting sorted now.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/08/2025 08:03

That’s a positive result, OP.

I think, when you’re feeling better, I’d put a complaint into PALS about the triage nurse, there’s definitely a learning need that has to be met with this person.

Well done for sticking it out as well.

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 08/08/2025 08:07

Glad to read your update that you've been admitted and a treatment plan is in action. Hope you're transfer to the bigger hospital doesn't take too long.

Although you decided to stay, tell the doctor how the triage nurse assessed you as low priority, said it looked like a boil not an abcess, the antibiotics needed more time to work and advised you were likely to wait 4 hours and that while you're welcome to wait, in your position she'd leave and seek a GP appointment.

Had you taken that advice you'd now be at home waiting phone your GP not receiving IV fluids and awaiting transfer for a surgical consultation.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. 💐

Call for an ambulance.

Read the thread.

taxidriver · 08/08/2025 08:09

i wouldnt waste your energy complaining op, keep positive

Beammeupscotty2025 · 08/08/2025 08:11

Glad you’ve been admitted and you listened to your own gut and waited it out.

I think everyone just needs to accept A&E is always going to be at least a 4 to 6 hour wait. Even 30 years ago this was the case too.

Not when we lived abroad though! No longer than 2 hours in that country!

What are your bras like? Maybe check them for any underwires showing through the fabric.

I wouldn’t complain I would just ask that your case be flagged for a review so the triage nurse can reflect on their practice and identify any issues with their triage assessment.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Bookloveruk · 08/08/2025 08:16

Hope you feel better soon.

cryinglaughing · 08/08/2025 08:18

My dh fell at the triage hurdle.
She placed him in the lowest category and he hung around in the waiting area for 7 hours before being seen by the Dr.
They immediately put up an antibiotic drip whilst they waited for a bed.
He ended up being admitted for 9 days whilst he recovered from sepsis, pneumonia and pleural effusion.

I very much wanted to go back and see the triage nurse and tell her to stick her very flippant "cat 5", that she said in a lovely sing song voice as we trailed back to the waiting room, where the sun doesn't shine.

Glad you chose to sit it out.
We did find that when he got into the system he was very well looked after and they took his concerns seriously.
Sadly, getting past the gate keeper was the worst part of the process.

Sunbeam01 · 08/08/2025 08:22

Thank goodness you stayed.

Wishing you a speedy recovery xx
