Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

Get your kids to quickly pack a bag with charger, some cash, pajamas, book, etc while you phone a taxi and GET TO A&E ASAP.

Can I just say ( not to OP, to everyone else) isn’t it an appalling situation that the OP is being told not to ring 999 but ring a taxi.
The NHS costs us a fortune and isnt fit for service.

Keeping you in my thoughts OP but the sooner you get to A&E, the better.

EDIT - just seen your post. Don’t wait for a phone call. Go now. I never advocate for going to A&E - but this is an emergency.

Edited

Because she doesn’t need an ambulance! If she well enough to hang on the phone for 45 minutes she’s well enough to jump in a taxi or have FiL drop her at the hospital. Let ambulances deal with the life and death situations!

Do not leave the hospital. They can only diagnose sepsis with a blood test. Please ask for one. Chills and vomiting would indicate a serious infection.

Incorrect! Sepsis is identified through a series of clinical examinations with blood tests being a part of the diagnosis! If doctors relied only on blood tests which can can take up to a couple of hours to come back it in some cases would be too late!

Hope you're ok and got sorted? I'm an A+E Sister and her triage sounds rubbish. I really feel for you.

Thinking of you OP. I'm another person here to say I really hope you managed to hold on at A&E. Do you have a friend that can be with you? It's hard to advocate for yourself when you're feeling so unwell so maybe a friend could help?

I've been triaged.

After taking my observations she said "you don't have sepsis. Cellulitis yes. Sepsis no"

She had a look at the boil and drew around it but said it looked like a boil and not an abscess. She advised that I'll be waiting hours to be seen as I will be the lowest priority and if she were me she would go home and wait to see my GP in the morning but antibiotics take 2 days to begin to work.

I did explains that it feels bigger, has gone from being round to oval and the pain is worse than it was. She nodded and said I was welcome to wait if that's what I wanted and she gave me 2 paracetamol and said it'd be about 4 hours to see a doctor.

So I'm back out in the waiting room feeling like an idiot. I don't know maybe I should just go home and ring my GP at 8am.

How are you going? Did you decide to stay at A&E? Hopefully you're feeling better ASAP

Boopeedoop · 08/08/2025 06:22

I hope you have been seen, and I hope they are offering you help.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/08/2025 06:45

I hate that medical professionals think people turn up to waste time. I

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/08/2025 06:46

Oops!

I know there are “frequent fliers” to A&E but OP sounds genuinely poorly who needs proper help.

OP, I hope you stayed and have been examined properly by a doctor with a treatment plan in place.

MinnieBaldock · 08/08/2025 06:47

I went to A and E a couple of months ago and the Tiage nurse was a right misery.
Hope you stayed and have seen a proper Doctor. Good luck.

Woahbodyforrrrm · 08/08/2025 06:49

@DarkSuitsSadSongsI hope you’ve been seen by this point and they’ve put something in place to get you on the mend ❤️‍🩹

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/08/2025 07:00

I really hope you've seen a doctor now, OP, and that you're doing OK.

Lilactimes · 08/08/2025 07:01

@DarkSuitsSadSongs I hope you’ve been seen and you’re feeling more comfortable now. Sounds really unpleasant and you were right to go and check it out x

HatandCoat · 08/08/2025 07:02

Hopefully you've seen a doctor now and are receiving treatment.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 08/08/2025 07:04

I stayed and was seen about 4am.

The Dr did admit me. He doesn't think it's sepsis but it is a nasty case of cellulitis that needs monitoring. He took some bloods and set up an IV for fluids as I'm a bot dehydrated. He also gave me some tramadol for the pain which meant I fell asleep and even dozed through the transfer up to the medical ward at 6am.

This is a tiny hospital that only does day surgery. So the plan today is to arrange for me to be transferred to the bigger hospital for the surgeons to take a look at the abscess as it will probably need to be surgically drained.

I’m so glad you stayed! I hope the fluids start to help (should help ease the nausea) and the transfer doesn’t take too long.
