Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

Sorry you’re teary though. A repeat ultrasound is good to know exactly what is going on. Take care.

Pearl97 · 09/08/2025 12:31

I’m loving that the nurses are being so kind to you xx

BluntLion · 09/08/2025 12:39

I'm so sorry OP, sounds like you've been through the wars.

Hope it gets better asap x

This all sounds positive OP, and hopefully you'll know soon if you're going to need surgery.

Your DH has redeemed himself somewhat imo. For some reason, I found the idea of him going through your underwear to check your bra size strangely touching!

JustAForeigner · 09/08/2025 13:10

I am glad you disregarded the triage nurse advice and stayed to be seen. When all of this is over, you need to go back and give feedback on the nurse's advice. Had you followed it, the consequences could have been dreadful.

UnsocialMedia · 09/08/2025 13:14

Well done @DarkSuitsSadSongs and Me DarkSuits. He was a bit crap, sounds like he didn’t fully appreciate you were in a serious situation, but he’s doing his best to put things right.

Hope you get some sleep, and hope the ultrasound results are good.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 09/08/2025 13:17

I have a theory about the nurses...

This is a very small dedicated breast surgical ward with 8 rooms and 1 Bay so 14 beds in total. There are 3 nurses and it's quiet with only 6 rooms occupied.

It's not as manic as most wards so the nurses are not frantic and have time to provide the level of care that nurses want to deliver to their patients.

The ward receives additional funding from breast cancer charities so is well equipped. Each room has a flat screen tv on the wall, massive electric beds and recliner chairs. I feel guilty since I don't have cancer so have used the QR code the nurse brought me when I asked to make a donation.

So glad you are on the road to recovery.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 09/08/2025 13:22

Oh goodness Op what a rollercoaster. Just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery.

justasking111 · 09/08/2025 13:33

Its interesting that when the breast is involved many folks think it minor. Whereas the damn thing can run rampant through breast tissue sucking up the infection like a sponge. I think mastitis is minimised too.

Mumdiva99 · 09/08/2025 13:35

Thanks for the updates. I am so pleased to hear that you are having a better day. Fingers crossed the absess fully drains and no more surgery is required. A few photos and you could have put this in Sporners Corner!!

Tortielady · 09/08/2025 13:43

It's wonderful news that it's burst. I had one do that on the ward and felt instantly better - I'm sure my temperature dipped. I still had to go down to theatre, because the surgeon wanted to take a good look and give the site a clean, but at least I got some sleep. It made a horrible, smelly mess, but as the nurse said, better out than in 😁

It's also good news that your DH is making an effort to look after you and getting you treats as well as essentials and that you'll get to see your DC - important for you as well as them. Wishing you a continued recovery and return home soon. 💐

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 09/08/2025 13:53

If you have any photos you should post them on sporner corner. They would love it over there.

Helen1625 · 09/08/2025 13:54

Sounds very similar to my experience a few years ago. Had a pea sized lump on the cheek of my bum which started to feel sore, then began growing quite rapidly, was hot, red and incredibly painful. I saw 2 different GPs a couple of days apart who prescribed antibiotics which didn't help. It kept growing. I was feeling really poorly at this point, fever, aching and in so much pain. On the 3rd visit to the GP, he phoned the hospital to say I was on my way. The surgeon asked me why I had left it so long! I hadn't, it had grown so rapidly and I'd seen the doctor 3 times in about 5 days, the last day being when I was admitted. They had to surgically drain it although it did burst whilst I was waiting, the smell was awful and it looked like brown sludge. Still ended up going to theatre to have the dead skin cut away and the inside of the wound cleaned. The wound was left open to heal from the inside so I had Tegaderm patches over it for a few weeks while it healed. There were frequent trips to the nurse to have it cleaned and dressed before they started allowing me to dress it at home in between visits. I can entirely understand how you feel - it was probably the most unwell I have ever felt in my life! Wishing you a speedy recovery x

ScreamingDelight · 09/08/2025 14:08

Very glad to hear you are on the road to recovery op. Our nhs gets bad press, but it is a fantastic service, it is just so under funded and vastly stretched.

lifeonmars100 · 09/08/2025 14:12

Glad to hear that things are hopefully improving, you are so brave x

JFDIYOLO · 09/08/2025 14:26

Oh my goodness OP!

Well done for following the wise advice and going in. So sorry you had to push though, imagine if you'd left ...

The burst must have been epic - absolutely better out than in.

The ward you're on sounds great; what a nice thing to do, to make a donation. 🤗

Brilliant FIL including the arse kicking he gave his son, but it does seem your DH really stepped up once reality had percolated through.

All the best to you & your family, rest, follow instructions, take the meds, bla bla bla.

nannyl · 09/08/2025 14:32

I've been following this post for a while.

I just wanted to add that I hope you are feeling much better soon.

It sounds truly horrific, what you have been through, and real back luck that your DH was away.

Hope you are home soon xxx

alondonerabroad · 09/08/2025 14:41

So pleased to hear your update!! And glad to see your DH is stepping up. Enjoy your time being looked after in such calm and comfort. Never underestimate the body’s ability to not only heal but also to escalate very quickly. I don’t know why but your story and updates and the messages of support have given me such a warm fuzzy feeling today, so thank you all!

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 09/08/2025 14:58

My scan again showed very little fluid sp surgeon has decided against another draining attempt. My temperature is normal and ny heart rate is down so points to recovery beginning. I can go home tomorrow morning and I'm booked into the clinic on Tuesday at my local hospital for a check on how well its draining/healing.

The nurse has removed my cannula and will place a new one (thankfully not a grey one again - those are like tree branches) tonight for my last dose of IV antibiotics. Amd I've got a fresh dressing on. Still can't get the smell of that drainage out of my nose 😫 it's haunting me.

Now that I know surgery is not happening DH is bringing me a white pudding supper from the nearby Chippy for my dinner at 6pm.

I'm going to have a shower, dry shampoo my hair (DH actually packed that for me - he had no list so I'm impressed) and put on my new pyjamas for my babies coming.

It's a scottish delicacy haha

It's basically suet and oatmeal shaped into a sausage shape, covered in batter and deep fried. A supper up here just means with chips. So a fish supper means fish and chips.

I'm on mounjaro so will manage to eat about 10% of it but honestly I've barely eaten for a week so I'm sure my body will be grateful for the calories.

As an aside I dreaded telling the doctors and nurses that I was on mounjaro but honestly their reactions have been so positive about it with one doctor saying how it's wonderful to hear people having great results from it.

I once got food poisoning from a red pudding supper.
We were on holiday at the time in a little village, and the doctor came to see me during the night, wearing her nightdress under her coat.
It turned out that she lived next door to where we were staying.
🤣

rainbowstardrops · 09/08/2025 15:27

I’m so glad that you’re feeling brighter now and you’re going to see your twins!

So are red pudding suppers even if the one I had in Brora gave me food poisoning
