Along the lines of that “overheard in Waitrose” trend a few years ago, “No, no Tarquín can’t have the regular avocados he’s allergic, he can only eat the organic ones”….Overheard on Mumsnet…what’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever read?

The most recent one that made me laugh...OP posting link to New Look dress, should she wear this to such and such, so ballpark figure dress must cost £30-50...first reply says it looks terrible, try this and sends link to dress costing over £450.00!!

Yes, "What about this miserable looking dress that costs over ten times the one you're looking at?"

I always remember the (male) poster who’d gone into the supermarket toilets and sobbed in front of the mirror because he hadn’t been asked to verify his age when buying alcohol at the checkout. It was fabulously unhinged.

That's reminded me of a public toilet one. I don't remember the exact details but it was something about a woman being bizarrely rude and aggressive to an OP in public toilets.

And one poster who couldn't understand why posters were bring unkind about the aggressive person and claimed they would have gone into their bag to get a bar of chocolate to offer to the aggressive person.

Then wouldn't back down and extended it in later posts to they would offer to take the aggressive person for a coffee to talk as they were obviously having a hard time.

Sure you would Angela, sure you would.

Indeed.

And I wish people realised that 'gut instinct' really isn't reliable when it's based on something as nebulous as a 'look' or a 'feeling' and how everyone projects a lot of stuff that usually doesn't apply.

I remember how batshit MN went when the BBC Korea correspondent had been interrupted live on TV by his DC.

Before the news made it clear, they were his DC and his wife frantically trying to get the DC out of the room, a lot of MN had been quite unconciously racist and assumed the wife was a nanny as she wasn't white and had created this idea of a poor nanny being sacked or worse, abused by this awful man. And so were the DC obviously being abused.

Lots of people saying she 'looked TERRIFIED', and not that she just looked like 'OMFG, the kids have just interrupted a live interview on the BBC!'

Somehow, that little girl who looked to me, very confident walking up to her Dad with a little dance in her step as he laughed and tried to move her away was interpreted as a traumatised little girl desperate for attention from a horrible Dad who probably never sees his kids as outsources childcare to a nanny paid a pittance as he callously batted her away with a look of fury on his face (according to some posters). And the nanny was abusing the kids too (through fear of him) based on the 'rough' way she pulled them out of the room.

It was frightening the lengthy, complicated narratives MN came up with based on a few seconds of seeing people they knew nothing about.

Though once it calmed down, it did give me a rare MN laugh as a poster referred to the little one in the walker as 'baby davros skidding into the room'.

I didn't see the thread but can well imagine !

people also need to remember 'profiling' is and always has been a huge thing and people often (even if they don't like to admit it to themselves) have prejudices against different classes, cultures, ages etc... that 'inform' the snap decision thoughts they make when meeting people.

Its far more likely someone will decided someone who looks teens/early 20s with a baby especially if they think they 'look' poorer will assume them to be a more neglectful mother (along with other random assumption like they will be a 'single mother' etc...) than say a middle class approx. 40 year old mother so they then look and invent reasons to think theres issues there aren't.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2025 12:57

I'm always stunned at the posters who don't wrap their children's Xmas presents, everyone is different obviously but I remember the best part of Xmas morning was seeing all the presents wrapped up and wondering what they were and the excitement of unwrapping. Yes, I KNOW environment, blah blah blah..

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/08/2025 13:17

Was it this one @RepoTheGeriatricOpera ? I joined a few years afterwards and it was still being mentioned but I only read it fairly recently because a poster brought it up as a legend of MN folklore and curiosity finally got the better of me.

Said this one before but bringing my kids up bilingual is showing off. Never mind that one set of grandparents speaks no English.

OutHereSisters · 04/08/2025 13:50

I contributed to a perfectly jolly "What does your Christmas look like and what does it cost" thread.

I said that DP and I go insane at Christmas - the house is like a grotto; Christmas clothes; tonnes of presents; cupboards bursting with food and drink; probably about £2-3K spent each year. I said we're child-free and we don't have visitors, that's just for us two.

I thought it was a perfectly reasonable post, truthful and light-hearted. It elicited some completely bonkers responses including that I should check all DP's devices because he might be trying to groom children with our Christmas-ness. I mean, just completely unhinged 😅

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2025 13:54

One where a poster asked about taking the MAP because she had a v small chance of being pregnant and she wasn't quite ready to TTC. She 'd booked an expensive holiday IIRC.

She was told that she shouldn't have kids because she's likely abort if they had the wrong eye colour. Then loads of posters accused her of being addicted to seafood.

It was bizarre.

Christ, some right nasty bitches on that thread.

"It's OK to take your children to work, if you can't find childcare."

In the real world, this is not acceptable, but in the parallel world of Mumsnet, just let them tag along whilst you do your job. 🙄

🤣🤣🤣 Only if your a lowly cleaner though and the client needs to also provide snacks and entertainment for said child too as the poor child gets no treats.

There was a very sad case recently where a young woman died, her Mother, a prominent anti vaxxer denied her daughter had cancer and maintained she didn't need the medical treatment proposed. The Mother has been a nurse but it was reported she'd been struck off.

My teens would agree. All three sleep with their curtains open. I find it bizarre.

Your teens have never read/watched Salem's Lot, have they?

Oh my that thread😮😮

Astleyxyz · 04/08/2025 15:50

I commented on a school lunch/breakfast club post once about a child I taught from a very disorganised background - lots of police and social care involvement, lots of siblings, dad in prison - to say that every morning she was fed by school, a warm bagel and hot chocolate. Apparently this was disgustingly upf, we should be ashamed of ourselves and why wasn’t she in care ?
The ignorance was off the scale

StarlightLady · 04/08/2025 15:57

I got called “shitty” for saying l spell out to someone what my expectations are before having sex with them.

Yes I think I remember thst thread it was lots of hand ringing about healthy eating etc whilst ignoring the fact that without the breakfast club some children wouldn't eat at all

In other circumstances, on other sites, I’d be tempted to think it was a lone troll saying these things.

But this is Mumsnet, so I expect there were quite a few mentalists banging on about the evils of bagels and hot chocolate.

It’s quite incredible really.

Astleyxyz · 04/08/2025 16:14

School also provided her with toiletries and clean uniform, but yes how evil to make sure she was fed every morning 🙄

can you imagine the dc face if given fruit with Greek yoghurt and chia seeds! I’m technically middle class but still love a bowl of coco pops! (As do my skinny dc - call social services immediately)

A poster very recently who said she ‘really enjoys’ catering for vegans, vegetarians and nut allergy sufferers. I did wonder if the vegans, vegetarians and nut allergy sufferers were all attending the same meal.

Funnily enough my sister is friends with a married couple ,the wife is vegan, and the husband isn't but is allergic to red meat, nuts and all dairy products it does make me wonder what meals they have together.
