If you walk at least 10k steps a day, are you slim?

Just curious really having seen all these “work out how many steps a day you need to lose weight”
I average 7k a day and thinking about increasing it to lose some weight (as well as cutting out snacks. I know weight loss comes mainly from food)

I walk 15K - 20K every day.

I am fat.

I walk loads, weight lift, row, do circuits. I’m fat. Exercise is great for so many reasons but weight loss comes down to diet.

Exhaustedtiredneedabreak · 31/07/2025 08:17

I walk 10-15 k steps a day and am really quite fat. I eat too much. Far too much.

I am a size 10. I was always an 8 until peri. Snacking is my downfall. I have a job where I am on my feet most of every day. I always by habit take the stairs rather than a lift or escalator.

Food wise - I prefer veg, salads etc. i dont have a sweet tooth so can give or take chocolate / sweets. I rather have a starter than a dessert in a restaurant. i dont over eat.

Spend two weeks measuring portions. Cereal will be an eyeopener for most people on what is an actual portion. get used to seeing what one portion looks like.

Nope. I walk ten miles+ a day when I'm at work and at least 10,000 steps when it's the holidays. I'm fat Grin

Lushvegetation · 31/07/2025 08:17

I walk that most days and am significantly overweight.

cwmflahwbml · 31/07/2025 08:17

No

User415373 · 31/07/2025 08:18

I barely walk on some week days (7am - 5pm work from home, then the dinner, kids bedtime and crash out routine).
I am slim.
However I do try to do 2x strength workouts a week and I also run 2/3 times a week. I might hit 10k that day just from running, might not.
I have to watch what I eat now more than when I did 10k steps a day for work plus regular exercise.

QuitMoaning · 31/07/2025 08:18

I am averaging 15k a day at the moment and my bmi is 29 so a bit higher than it should be.

I am losing weight but very slowly as going for the permanent changes rather than fast changes

10 miles a day at work!! What is your job if you don't mind me asking?

VegQueen · 31/07/2025 08:19

No I’m not. Tbh I don’t think you can accurately work out how much weight you’ll lose from the number of steps as it depends how hard the walking is for you (speed, weight, gradient, baseline fitness etc). The impact of walking fast up hill will obviously be very different from slowly plodding around even with the same number of steps.

If you want to lose weight with walking, focus on adding in some brisk 30+ min walks where you get out of breath (carrying a heavy backpack can help). But changing the food you eat is much more likely to have an impact.

Dancepartykitchen · 31/07/2025 08:19

It does help a little, but the calories it burns are no where near what you might think. I upped my steps by about 3-5k more a day, workout 3 times a week & have a moderate calorie deficit of 3-500kcal & I average about 0.5-1kg loss a week. It doesn't work in isolation I'm afraid.

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 31/07/2025 08:20

@User415373 I'm a cook so I'm on my feet all day, plus I walk to work and back!

ConflictofInterest · 31/07/2025 08:20

No sorry, I don't have a car and do well over 10k steps, often 22k on busy days and I'm just tipping into the morbidly obese category. Maybe id be worse if I walked less but I actually think the exhaustion I feel from all the walking is what causes me to eat too much, as I don't eat any junk food and cook from scratch yet I am very fat.

Same here .

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/07/2025 08:21

I walk loads (thanks to the dog) I would say I’m pretty normal sized for a peri menopausal 40 something woman…

There goes my easy win hopes 😀

10,000 steps isn’t that far.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 31/07/2025 08:26

I walk 15-20k steps a day. I’m average.

KimHwn · 31/07/2025 08:28

I am always shocked when I check how few calories are burned by exercise. I have to do so much to burn off one item of high-cal food! However, I do feel the benefits of walking a lot more as I get older, it makes me feel so much better, physically and mentally.

itsmeafterall · 31/07/2025 08:34

You don't lose weight by just walking. You need a calorie deficit. It's pretty simple really.

That said walking is an all round beneficial exercise so keep doing that anyway.

Good luck

KateMiskin · 31/07/2025 08:35

Not post menopause. I am average. Walking isnt enough. I do it because I enjoy it.

BigSkies2022 · 31/07/2025 08:35

Walking is great and for many reasons - Shane O’Mara’s In Praise of Walking is a good read. But nutrition will drive weight loss: nutrient-dense foods that leave you in a calorie deficit. Add in more activity (walking) and 3 weight focused workouts a week and you’ll be grand. I’ve lost four kilos while gaining muscle like this in 3 months. My Fitness Pal is your friend.

Digdongdoo · 31/07/2025 08:36

10-15k steps a day, BMI hovers around 24-26. Walking doesn't burn a huge amount of calories, but it is still good for you both physically and mentally.

IglesiasPiggl · 31/07/2025 08:38

Everyday activity like walking is only a part of the picture, so asking people here won't give a clear answer because it depends what else they do and how much they eat. Being more active is better than being less active, but mainly the key to being slim is not to take in extra calories in the first place.
