Labour isn't working - Thread 5

TheNuthatch · 29/07/2025 14:33

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

<Totally off-topic alert> Ds got his first choice uni!

Fantastic news 👏

Thanks! He's studying Computer science with AI. He wants to be a network architect, whatever that is 🤷🏼‍♀️

Way over my head. But I would be confident that that’s a smart choice with a rosy future.

I hope your son’s celebrating.

Arrearing50 · 14/08/2025 10:02

Lovely to hear some good news - ahhh I wish I was about to study that! It’s an exciting time to be studying AI

Way over my head too, but sounds great. Very future-proof.
Thanks for sharing. I thought of you this morning but didn't want to pry. So pleased for you all.

You have one going to uni, and one starting secondary. That should give the economy a boost 😂. Lots of shopping to do £££.

Brilliant well done to him

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 14/08/2025 10:10

Thanks everyone 😊 Big sighs of relief all round this morning. Yes, one off to uni, one starting sixth form, one starting secondary. It's all change.

GCSEs in the Summer for one of mine - it’ll be a tense year!

reflecting on the nhs / private chasm - dh had mri 10 days ago, we’ve already got a call scheduled to go through the results with the specialist tomorrow.

the waiting time for non emergency mri where we are is so bad that when he needed one urgently in May, he was kept in as a hospital in patient so they could get the scan because the outpatient wait lists for mri are so long…

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 14/08/2025 12:28

Hope everything goes well with the specialist tomorrow @Arrearing50

Yes, I've found the NHS to be good in an emergency but, like you, that it fails to function properly outside of it. More and more people are turning to private to plug the gap - it's probably one of the few remaining growth sectors.

TheNuthatch · 14/08/2025 13:17

Best of luck @Arrearing50

Thanks both - completely agree the emergency care was great but I’m so glad we have bupa these days.

Today's Ricky Jones trial update reported in the Independent:

Giving evidence on Thursday, Jones’s friend Kevin Courtney, a retired teacher and former joint general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), said: “I had not heard him say those words or anything in any way similar to that.
“I think they are wrong. I was surprised that Ricky said them… I think it is completely out of character.”

Asked by Hossein Zahir KC, defending, whether Jones had ever encouraged any form of violence, Mr Courtney said: “No, it was a complete shock when I saw that video. Ricky’s speech was wrong, but it didn’t fit at all with the mood of the gathering that we were at. The mood was peaceful…Ricky’s words just didn’t gel with that at all.”
The retired teacher added: “Ricky’s words didn’t fit with that (mood), therefore people didn’t respond to them as anything they should do, it just didn’t fit with that at all.”

But he said the words, performed the throat slitting action in front of a gathering inciting hate and violence and then pleaded not guilty so has wasted everyone's time on this trial. Hopefully a loooong sentence is in the offing.

TheNuthatch · 14/08/2025 18:06

@Liker Thank you.
Reading that, it sounds like his defence are trying to suggest that there was no harm done. Out of character, not in keeping with the mood of event, mental health blah blah. He knew exactly what he was doing. It's shameful that he pleaded not guilty.

So NE yet again is bottom for A level results. We are just forgotten about up here

twistyizzy · 14/08/2025 18:07

Maybe Bridge shouldn't have stopped the Eton Academy from going ahead in a hugely deprived area....!

Really? Isn't our Bridge from the NE too? Why did she stop it going ahead?

Apologies, I have read/watched/listened to precisely bugger all today. So busy at work.

It's the complete dearth of grammar schools in the N.E, isn't it?

We've picked our way through the comprehensive system the best way we can, shifting houses to get the kids into the right secondary school and to get into the decent sixth form college they have needed/ will need to take hour long bus journeys, to adapt around it - but it doesn't make it easy.

Yes 100%

I’m visiting my parents at the moment and my dad has just told me that they are talking about taxing people 20% on any gain you make on your house if you decide to sell it. Does anyone know if this is true? I’m really hoping my dad has got his wires crossed on this one. If it is true then I think that is absolutely appalling!

😬🤯 I hope not.

Markham66 · 14/08/2025 18:30

Hopefully they have to call in the IMF soon and they will take the blame for the benefit cuts.

😬🤯 I hope not.

I’ve worked my backside off for years. My job has caused me an immense amount of stress to the point it’s making me ill. I carry on so that I can give my children a stable life and so that I can pass something onto them when I’m gone to help them. The idea that the government might be thinking of taking 20% from me should I ever sell it makes me feel absolutely sick!

TheNuthatch · 14/08/2025 18:34

Just googled.
I'm in the NW, not as bad here. We're in the middle of the table.

It’ll slow down people moving and keep people in houses. No idea though, I wouldn’t put it past Starmer and Reeves

I haven't heard or read anything like that, but Christ if that's true 😱.
