Labour isn't working - Thread 5

TheNuthatch · 29/07/2025 14:33

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Every day I look at this thread and each day I’m left puzzled at what this Labour government is trying to achieve.

The parents who are in expensive catchment areas will be up in arms if this policy goes ahead and a PP was correct stating the champagne socialist will defect.

As a teacher at an indie with DC also at an indie, it really feels like this government hates aspirational parents and the middle classes.

I look at the government and have an image of a snake eating itself - their self-destruct button seems to be constantly being pressed.

I hope the parents who are affected by this change (if it comes in) will look back at how some of them spoke about parents and children from indies and feel ashamed.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 08/08/2025 15:11

On the subject of independent schools, does anyone know if there’s an appeal against the High Court judgment about VAT?

Just like the Labour supporters in general, they will magically disappear. They won't feel ashamed. I can guarantee that

I am just grappling with how they can vilify some for supposedly targeting children but it is all LMAO at other children being targeted. They're all children after all. It's not ridiculous. It's double standards and hypocritical.

ETA that was meant for Phantom and the pointy finger ridiculousness comment.

Edited

I was accused of preferring one of my DC to the other (because I have one DC in state and one in private). That’s the level of spite that some of us have had to endure for the past year. I couldn’t give a fuck if that particular poster suffers because of this latest Labour policy (or any other Labour policy).

ISC decided against it due to cost. The faith school contingent are looking at it I believe.
The court verdict wrote their decision to make it difficult to challenge 🙄 What a surprise!

You're grappling with it? 😁 Well, grapple away. Although I've never met anyone bamboozled by the notion that people don't typically extend goodwill to those who revelled in their misfortune 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's the double standards that are hard to believe. It's always put forward on those threads how the children are the victims and they have done nothing wrong. Absolutely but how can someone believe that and 'laugh their arse off' at other children getting "shit" schools allocated? If it's all about the children, why don't those ones matter? Quick to call out any hypocrisy but deny their own. And condoning it is no better.

EasternStandard · 08/08/2025 15:58

Ik the types of posts @twistyizzymeans. As a state user I’m not for the VAT policy. It’s divisive and a very poor policy from Labour. If anyone has spent their time being spiteful they can see someone might return it.

Perhaps they should have been more reasonable about a terrible education policy and not fallen for Labour rhetoric.

It has been explained numerous times by numerous posters Inc myself. You are just stirring at this point trying to get a rise out of me. Stop with the faux naive posts to try and bait me.

I don’t follow. Unless I’ve misunderstood, the issue is that Labour decided that better off (generally speaking) parents who pay for private schooling, for lots of reasons, should pay 20% more for doing so. So those parents are unhappy.

But now other parents - a substantial number of which are Labour voters - who bought into pricey catchments for access to good state schools may find they’ve wasted their money and have their hopes for their children’s education thwarted.

So posters who suffered under the VAT change are laughing at left-wing parents who tried to or were planning to game the system they support and urge on everyone else, and who will be distraught at the thought of a shitty school for their children.

No-one’s picking on children (apart from Labour). They’re scoffing at the left-wing hypocrites.

But, as I say, I may have misunderstood.

No, they are 'laughing their arse off' at idea of champagne socialists' (who were pro vat) children getting shit schools. Of course it's the children who suffer, but that's okay because of who their parents are. And at the same time they are outraged about others attacking private school children because of who their parents are. But it's faux naivety to believe that this is hypocritical in any way!

Um. Well, it seemed to be ok for supporters of VAT on private education to cheer for that policy. So why is it double-standards to laugh at left-wing parents who would lose out on a policy that neither the private schooling parents nor the left-wing middle class parents support?

Absentmindedsmile · 08/08/2025 17:37

Oh amazing. I hope I really hope that Starmer and co act fast enough to end middle class privilege in ‘state’ schools. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.

RazzleDazzleEm · 08/08/2025 17:41

Labour shouldnt even be thinking about private schools except to say ,why do many of them work and get better results ,if they do let's model what works into state school as best we can.

Unfortunately they don't and have missed the point re sen and reading and everything else
Having said that I'm sure I heard about a plan to throw money at primary education which i do agree with however ,if your spending that money to push more phonics onto DC who are phonics blind then it's a total waste of time and money and unfortunately I think that's what they will do

( Lots of unfortunates there )

RazzleDazzleEm · 08/08/2025 17:48

@ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera love the grange hill reference

Won't this create ghettos of poverty ? I thought the magic pill was to mix people ?

Of course it is not okay to laugh at any outcomes where children suffer from batshit Labour policies, vat or other ones. I hope that it is all just MN keyboard warrior bluster from both camps and that in real life nobody would truly rejoice in shit options for any child, state or private. Children have no say at all in either the types of schools their parents choose or their parents' politics. They are the innocents in this mess.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 08/08/2025 20:40

Interesting about grammar and ‘faith’ schools which is the weaselly way Labour politicians and metropolitan champagne socialists (Tony Blair and Jezza most notably) have previously gamed the system -why not abolish those? Of you are going after indies? Of course they won’t / they need somewhere for their supporters to keep their kids away from the riff-raff.

True. Although Starmers kid didn’t suffer, of course. He had his dad’s friends’ luxury pad to stay in. It was important that ‘his boy’s’ GCSEs weren’t interrupted (understandably). But yet Starmer didn’t extend that care for the children at private schools who had / have to move due to his fcked up envy policy.

They’ll probably go after everything until there’s no decent education above the lowest level.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 08/08/2025 20:44

In an so relieved that my own kids are now through the system but genuinely despair for those now in it, and for my future grandkids. I was a teacher and so from what I saw from the state sector sent my kids to an indie where they thrived. I would really like that experience for all kids, out of the shambolic schools in the poorest communities.
But this government want to level down, not up, for other people’s kids.

Arrearing50 · 08/08/2025 21:18

Yes the direction of travel is all wrong - we should be empowering parents to spend money on whatever additional education would make their children thrive and giving them more control and choice, not the opposite.

if labour did any significant investment in primary education I’d be amazed. They don’t have the courage of their convictions so it’s all gimmicky tinkering.

CinnamonSquirrels · 08/08/2025 21:25

I don't believe they are invested or investing in education at any level. It is very sad.

The best thing you can do is embrace parental support. It saves money and gets good results. Squashing that so all dc do worse is so depressing.

TheNuthatch · 08/08/2025 21:33

Labour have been very effective at pitting parents against each other, and sowing division.
